Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Been following along behind the scenes Don. Cool git-down at your shop! The winner was the winner for sure. The '68 and the late arrival were awesome, two-door Novas are just plain killer but at different level and Beetles are a cool of their very own. Shoulda drug the rat down and mocked it up! Throw a Don'z logo on the door?
To be honest, I've only sub'd your thread like a year ago or so and haven't line-by-line read it through but I think I get the jist. It's going to be a cool truck man! I like your old wheels and tires better though. Sandblast and clear, new white-letter 50's?? Just sayin I'm no professional or self proclaimed expert but I've fired up a bunch of Chevy's from scratch. Learned some lessons the hard way too. If you have any drama getting this thing rocking be sure and post it up here. I'm on every single day and I'd love to be able to help. The first motor my Boy put together, he primed it the same way. Just didn't have the gauge hooked up and shot oil into his mouth. He's a spitter.

Thanx Brotha!!! Bit of a hiccup concerning the start-up… More to follow… Quote:
re: Wheels… I really would love some old school Cragar SS but, due to the lowering blocks, the U-Bolts would hit before those white 15's in the event of a flat tire... May look for some newer 5 spoke style wheels in the future, but the budget part has me trading and such... I will hit you up once I get a chance to spin her to life… had a hiccup today that stalled the start… more to come...

Well, the plan was to fire the engine today… The plan WAS...
Due to the unavailability, locally, of a lower radiator hose along with the shenanigans for some furry creature... DSC_0001 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Needless to say, the intake had to be removed and a handful of little acorns removed... Will update again once the lower hose materializes…

Obviously, the rags and tape, as well as the plastic bag that encased the motor on the stand, were no match to the craftiness of the guilty creature... Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Tuesday, when I had planned on the start-up, I realized all the fuel line I had on hand was 5/16ths and the Fuel Filter and Pump have 3/8ths fittings...
So, yesterday, along with the Lower Rad Hose, I grabbed a handful of 3/8ths Fuel Line… Upon arriving home I put the Lower hose on and the Brother-in-law returned with my daily driver and a weird noise under the hood... Popped the hood, listened to a noise that seemed to be steady yet sporadic… Didn't sound internal, so we switched it off and upon looking found this… IMG_3145 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr IMG_3146 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr P/S Pulley gave up the ghost... I traded a '71 Super Beetle (That I had a total of $50 in) for this truck and about 6 months after getting the truck I had to put intake gaskets on it. At that time I noticed the P/S Pulley had a mark across the grooves. The mark was similar to a mark made by a chisel... After putting it back together I've been using the truck daily for about 4 and a half years… No clue what caused the mark, but that is where the Pulley split across the drive surface... Luckily, I had on hand an extra pulley, so about 40 minutes later the DD was back in business... Start-Up coming soon...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
In the infamous words of Igor… "It's Alive!!!"
https://youtu.be/NfhAIelI9aY This is my first attempt to load a video and embed it here… Oil Pressure holding just over 50psi at idle… First attempt at cranking resulted in nothing but the starter spinning the motor over… We pulled the distributor and rotated back one tooth, re-installed and she fired right up... Feeling good, now to re-install cab and get after re-assembly...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Thanx Guyz for looking in and the kind words...
Today I fired it up again in order to bleed the P/S system and check the operation of the P/S Box… https://youtu.be/UQWFmwRlkTo Then I fired p to get a few revs in... Due to the backfire and subsequent flame from the right bank, Valve adjustments and timing check is in the near future… http://youtu.be/CwMQbzS3xuc The Engine is holding 52psi Oil Pressure at idle after warmed up… IMG_3193 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr I also found that a pack of hose clamps I purchased at a truckload tool sale are garbage… Tightened this one up on the hose and after the short time running I found this… Tried to check the tension on the clamp and it is stripped and not holding tension… IMG_3208 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr
