Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yep.....I knew something just HAD to go wrong ....
It did...
When I started wiping the door down to remove the buffing compound
There it was ...big as all getout...
I burned thru the paint....
Toothpicks ain't gonna fix this...
Now I'm wondering if I should repaint both doors...
Since they both have had the same treatment done to them.. .
Oh well ....here we go again...

Oh man, I feel for you. I had to paint my squarebody hood 3 times to be satisfied with it... the 3rd after having done cut & buff of the entire hood. Other than the burn through that door looks great! It's how we learn I guess.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yeah Rick...I was tickled with how the door turned out....(in that 1st pic)..
When I 1st saw the burnthru, I thought it was the reflection of a cloud...
It wasnt
I've got both doors sanded back down, ready to repaint..after I got to thinking about all the sanding I did trying to fix the eyeball issues, I figured the paint on the other door had to be getting thin,,, better safe than sorry

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I hate to admit it, but I know the feeling. Rebuilt the column in my 79 Jeep 6 times before I finally had everything right. I did have everything in the column from a later model Chevy, but 6 times!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

72c20...It doesnt look to bad in the pic...but I would certainly look for rust..even from Az...those body styles were horrible about the cowls rotting out of them...I would really look hard inside the cowl vent at the back of the hood, and above the kick panels ,under the dash,on both sides...i had to rebuild one side on the 57..the other side was fine...and keep in mind,.theres not much after market support for IH trucks...
As far as price, that's not to bad out of line...again, depending on rust issues.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Dale, John...if I dont screw up the buffing again, the cab is next for paint...
After all the re-dos ive had I'll have to get some more paint..I dont think I've got enough left to paint it...especially if I have to do it more than once...

Greg, What ya want to do now is get another 2 qts or so & start using it on the first coat when you go for the cab. Maybe even the second coat on the roof, back of the cab, ect.
Saving the paint matched to the doors & fenders for the last 2 coats & then touch-ups down the road id always a good plan. Lorne
