Stock truck manifolds, 2.25" pipe, generic turbo mufflers, and 3.5' x 18' tips.

So.... I'm thinking that after I get the crew cab bought next fall, I'll probably start looking for some better heads and an LS6 cam kit. I don't want to put a converter in it, that's the reason for the LS6 cam. It's probably about as big as I can go and not have to step up.

The 95-up Vortec V-6 torque converter will stall at about 2400 rpm behind a V-8 and is as tough as GM made them for the 4L60E. It is really popular with the Impala SS guys and holds up behind their 4000 pound tanks so it should do fine in Fred too.

I ran one in my 95 Formula that made 340 hp to the wheels and beat the snot out of it on the track for over a year with no problems from the converter and mine was a used one out of a 130,000 mile S-10 Blazer that I got with the transmission at a pull-it-yourself wrecking yard for $50.

This converter should work great with the LS1 hot cam.

Don't give up on the 5.3 heads yet. Try the hot cam with the LS6 yellow springs and the Vortec V-6 stall converter first. You might be surprised at how much power they can build. If they are not enough for you then upgrade the heads with no money lost.

I was looking at the ls6 cam but I've decided on the ASA cam that Gm offers
it's a torque cam with lots of overlap and really mean idle.

also want to say thanks to you and all the guys here that help with the many question I had,, as of today my truck is alive again.. it started on the first try....have a small leak on the return line and a small leak right at the transmission where the cooler lines come out...

I looked at both the ASA and the LS1 Hot Cam, but they both have a rougher idle than I want. I don't want to up the converter either. That is why I am looking to the 02 and up LS6 cam. In a 5.3 they idle like stock.

I was looking through some notes today and saw that I also had the Vinci Performance Ultra Torque and their 043 towing cam in my book as possibilities. They both have a little choppier idle than stock, but not too bad. And all 3 will work with a stock converter.

Sweet!!!!!! I'm happy to hear that it fired up right away. Do a good check of all liquid fittings, electrical connections. You are sure to find a few little things here and there. Congrats again!

thanks bob... I did check all fitting and wire connections they are all good.. the only reason the fuel is leaking is because the return line from the vette filter is a 5/16 hose and the return to my stock 84 tank is smaller than that... I tried double clamp it but didnt work... it looks like the 5/16 hose fits better in the one line that came from the canister for the evap stuff...? do you think I could just clamp it to that line instead?
and the trans lines I leaking at the clamp.. so I am just gonna order the right fittings....
bob how did you guys make the alternator charge... I guess I eliminated the plug that went to it and yes I got you on the a few things here and there...

I don't know if it has the CS-130 alternator or a newer version but it is probably the same control circuit wiring.

The L terminal on the CS-130 alternator is connected through an idiot light on the dash. It needs that resistance to function.

You can connect it to the alt warning lamp wire that was on the old 12si alternator in your truck or run a CS-130 pigtail harness from GM that they have with a resistor in the L terminal connection.

You can also get a courtesy light circuit out of a donor car and connect it through that too. I did it this way on an old Jaguar that I put an LT1 / 4L60 into to get the alternator to work since it didn't have an alternator warning lamp circuit to use. I left it under hood as a diagnostic tool to know the alternator was working.
