Talking Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

My friend in the local truck club is repairing and painting my console for me. So far so good. Before and after with primer.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Fixed turn signals, stop lights, and figured out what was wrong with my wipers. Just got it yesterday. 67 c20. Factory 327/400 and ac. That's it. No power brakes or steering. Kinda a strange combo. Hope to get it registered and inspected in a few weeks.

I installed my fire extinguisher. Fit pretty good on my seat rail. Attached it with stretchable fabric and velcro so it releases quickly and is easy to grab. I also took her out for a nice cruise and filled her up with gas.

Replaced my rubber fuel line with a braided one. Also organized my spark plug wires a little bit with some of those fancy-shmanzy wire separators. I just don't like them touching valve covers and headers....

Pics and tricks?

I know we have threads on this, but I'm interested in doing it while the truck is sitting on jacks in the garage.

During my build, I didn't shorten the column (crash sliding bar). I have the tank in the cab. And, I had late model
buckets in at first. Now, with the bench seat, it's too snug in there for me.

Yeah, I could lose some weight. I keep trying.....

Right now I have the column dropped in the cab and the dash out for a amp:volt gauge changeover.

So, I figured this would be a good time to get some more er, "tummy room".

-Did you shorten it while the column was still attached to the rag joint?
-Did you move the reverse switch to the engine side of the fire wall?
-If you pulled the whole column to do the mod, how tough was it to get to the
bolts on the rag joint from underneath?

Thanks.

.
I pulled the column out and cut 2 inches out. I did this 4 inches before the nut switch mine is not working anyway. I used a pipe cutter for nice straight cuts and cut the shaft with a cut off wheel. I then ground the ends almost to a point and used a piece of angle to hold everything straight to weld it back up. I will post a pic tomorrow. It does give a lot more room but I would not go more often Han 2 inches as it makes the steering wheel closer to the seat. I do have a grant 13.5 inch wheel on it

Well..I finally put a 7 qt Moroso oil pan on my stroker. Only had to remove engine mount bolts, tranny mount, and drive shaft, then lift and move it all toward the rear 2 inches so the pan would fit...wow!!

Cut the roof and cab back off my 68 C30 and a donor cab today. Hopefully get them both cleaned up tomorrow and welded back together. Hang the doors back in place and maybe get started getting her running next.
Sounds easy, right, ?????
We'll see.

Well, Yesterday the roofs came off and today the new roof and cab back went into place. Still got a lot of welding and a bit of hammer/dolly work but "Homer got a new hat". Been wanting to tear into this thing for about a month and couldn't. That changed yesterday. Rock and roll.

Finally found some 8mm HEI plugs wires that fit. Needed the long ones for a 75 Corvette 350. Also mocked up the fuel line to the carb. Getting closer.

Tightened up my headers and removed the AC compressor from the serpetine setup that I have. Installed the replacement pulley. One of these corrected the loud tapping noise. I suspect the headers.

Then took her out for a drive through wine country with the wife before the Superbowl.

Also organized all my tools during the quick tune up. I sure have a lot of extras.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Sunny day today in the California foothills. Ambled out and uncovered the truck. The dash is still out. Steering column was loosened to
drop down for dash clearance. Has been for a couple of weeks so I could make the amp:volt gauge change-over.

Popped the hood. Next thing I knew, a couple hours had passed and I had the steering column out. And the "crash link" and rag joint
were out on the bench for shortening.

Slides just right for the adjustment. It's all cleaned up and painted. Waiting for the paint to properly dry.

Maybe it'll be sunny tomorrow.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Well, I tore down the front end on Sunday. After changing hub bearings and seals, inner axle seals, spindle bearings, and axle u-bolts, I got everything put back together today. I used a black gasket maker, can't remember the brand, instead of a gasket. Since it was so cold today, I will let it set up over night before I add fluid. The ball joints and tie rods are the only things I have not replaced south of the steering column since I got the truck. I have already put new calipers, pads, frame to caliper brake line, steering box, tires and shocks. The only reason for not replacing ball joints and tie rods were they are solid and have no play. I also put a new set of Warn Hubs. I had a little trouble getting the driver side hub assembly in. The two differences I noticed about these hubs from the old ones are no spring on new ones, and was not able to see or get snap ring on grove of the end of the axle on both sides. Problem? I was able to get the large ring in. Lessons I learned on this project are when you are just starting, tools for a job can be more expensive than the parts for the job you are doing. Its better to have the right tool the first attempt to save time, money, and frustration. I did gain confidence to move onto something else. Not sure what is next yet. I am thinking maybe all new brake system. I want to say thank you to those that answered my questions.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

After getting our 67 inspected and registered yesterday I figured it was time to do some mantinance. Removed cowl and installed new antenna and cleaned that area out. Fixed rear reveres light socket. Changed engine oil and filter. Flushed coolant and put new coolant in with a new cap. And let the wife and daughter wash it. Also ordered new tires and power disk brake set and rear lowering springs. Looks like maybe next weekend will be very busy.

I ordered a bunch of parts to convert it back to a standard trans. I believe I still need a mount for the z bar pivot ball to mount it on the block? also I took a picture of my new engine.

Have you tried electrolysis? It works great and requires little effort. graphite anodes are the cleanest. Electrolysis does take a long time though and some metals can't go in there. also springs

Drove one to the biscuit run with the louisiana Classic truck club. Then changed the oil in both the 68 & 70 trucks. Been a great day.
