Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Upon working on the 67 and basically waiting for parts or making preparation for new parts I've been doing little things to the frame like swapping out hardware for grade 8 hardware and while I was doing this I started messing with the steering shaft and I noticed that there is a lot of play between the piece attached to the bottom of the column and the piece attached to the gear box, so after I finish the 700r install and once it's back driving real nice and dependable again then I'm going to do something about that. I'm considering just swapping out that entire shaft for another set up, I kinda don't want to go back with the original style as it seems a little outdated compared today's standards and also I want something a little more stronger that won't go out anytime soon. So what would you guys recommend for a new shaft?

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Ok so I got a driveshaft. I installed it and made a temporary crossmember, so today I've been test driving the truck. After a couple drives it's been getting better, at first it wouldn't shift into 2,3,4, but I finally got it to shift now the trans does have a shift kit and since it uses a TV cable I still need to make adjustments in order for the shifting to get a little smoother but I'm sure it's just being a little stubborn that I awoke it from years of sleeping but the only thing that concerns me is that as soon as I shift it into gear; reverse or drive it sends power almost immediately and if I hold the brakes to keep the truck in one spot and let the engine idle in gear then the engine dies., and once I start driving the truck and try to come to a stop like as if I was at a stop light then then engine starts to run real rough and wants to die until I put it into neutral... So if I could just get that taken care of then I would say it's all going well

Almost sounds like the converter isn't unlocking to me....

If this is the case how do you force it to unlock?

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

I have no experience in doing a swap so can't give you an intelligent answer. Hopefully someone can chime in. But I believe it's electrical, I'm not sure if power locks it or unlocks it.

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Well I've got news. Good news is; CPP crossmember will be here on the 1st.
Bad news is there won't be a transmission in my truck to use the crossmember... The 700r has to come out.. So I've done some reasearch and there's about an 80% chance that my 700r when it was rebuilt had the pump changed for a non lock up system, and they have my dad (since it was his at the time) a locking converter to install on the trans. Now incase someone looks at this thread in the future for information I'm going to explain what has to happen. When you alter the pump for non lockup YOU MUST put a "dummy" converter in meaning a torque converter made for a 700r that can't lock. They must be paired or you will have problems like I am experiencing, by altering the pump you change the flow of fluid and this directly sends fluid to the converter and if you have a locking converter installed (which you shouldn't if your pump is set up for non lock up) then this apples the lock up feature on you converter thus making it ways locked. This is seeming to be the case with my trans, the trans must've been built on a Monday if they were stupid enough to install a locking converter... Anyways enough ranting. So trans will come out and I guess I'll take it to a shop I trust and have friends at and I'll have them switch the necessary parts out to make it lock up only by way of solenoid almost like the factory.... If I install it and it still gives me trouble then I'll put the trans and this will be the last automatic in my 67.

Well I guess everything has a price and for getting a rebuilt 700r for free from your dad comes with alotttt of labor haha... Well about this time I would be installing the cpp crossmember that just came in but no need so it's just going to have to sit on the work bench and look pretty haha

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Don't know if it's a bad thing or not but I usually post here and right after I start looking around and talking with people to get the answer I'm looking for, kinda works as a back up incase I can't find anything. Picked up another part today. I went to Modesto and was looking around at probably the coolest pepboys I've ever been to and got a part from edelbrock for my carburetor that I've been meaning to get forever!

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Well the new edelbrock fuel line I got points directly to my upper intake bracket for the AC.. So I'm going to have to take that bracket off, as I don't have the ac hooked up.

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Well 67 is very un-roadworthy as it sits right now, trans is still out so doesn't drive, took the collapsible steering shaft out to check the splines and size of shafts to buy the new cpp steering shaft, so it doesn't steer, then next up is the brakes I've got the new lines on and waiting to morrow for the prop valve to come in so I can go get a fitting to go for the 1/4 rear port to 3/16's, so it doesn't stop either haha hopefully I can get the brakes all bled tomorrow and order the steering shaft and then as soo as that comes in I'll get that installed and then steering and brakes should be better then before... Still waiting for the tranny shop to give me a call to let me know what's happening, so I think tomorrow if I don't get a call by noo I'll call them and see what up.

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

That's what I was thinking! I figure I'd give them 4-5 days since all they have to do is take the pump out and the pan off and check things out, I figure that's piece if cake for them since the build transmissions all day. So I'm hoping when I talk to them tomorrow they've got good news for me!

Re: 1967 Chevy CST aka "the loud truck"

Ok so right now my prop valves waiting patiently at home for me to come and install it, so hopefully tonight I'll have the brakes done up.

As for steering: ordered my new shaft from CPP so that'll probably come in around wed-thurs next week and I'll get that installed then.

As for the tranny... Called the shop up and I guess somehow they weren't able to get ahold of me but they said Monday they'll have the right valves put in the pump to make it lock and unlock like original and then I'll put that back in with my new crossmember for CPP and then it's test driving time. Especially with gas as low as 2.95 around here I'm sooo looking forward to cruising!
