8man start off by spraying primer to get the technique down, then try with a practice fender etc. to get comfortable.

Reaper, I was thinking about trying some primer. I can always sand it back down to metal and try again. Good advice. I'll do that since I have plenty of parts to prime right now.

OK, it's been ten days since I said we were ready for paint. What has slowed us up was having problems with the paint. For some reason we were getting little blue spots in the paint, as if it wasn't mixed good enough. So I took it back to the paint store, showed them what was happening,(pics on cell phone and I can't get them to down load, will show later if I can) they sent their paint pro out to look at the panels. He used his Ultra-violet light, etc to check, the spots were flat, not something that fell into the paint. After a while he ask if I had tried to wet sand out the spots. I hadn't, so I got water and 600 paper and kept wet sanding until it disappeared. Now, my hood had about 20 of these spots, which I sanded out. My question was, why it happened, and how to keep it from happening again. Both the fenders and doors also had these spots, which I sanded out.

The paint store called the main supplier to check on mixing of the paint, which they said was all new products, and they thought it was in my prep work. My paint store knows me and knows how cautions I am about prep work, and keeping a fairly clean paint area.

After waiting for 4 or 5 days, I told them to shake the s**t out of both cans of my paint. I took it home and poured both gallon cans into a new bucket. The gallon can we had been using showed this blue in the bottom, that wasn't mixing correct. We mixed the paint in the bucket by hand and then strained that mixed paint back into the gallon cans. Couldn't see anything in the strainers, so we will use it as is and see how it works.

The reason I'm telling about this is, everyone can run into problems with paint, it's never 100%, but you try and do the best you can. I've never had this happen before, and hope I never do again.

To end this lengthing story, we painted on Wednesday and today, and it was fine, no problems. So I'll close this part and show some pics...Jim

Today, Mark and I took the fenders to the basement, brought up the doors. I wet sanded both doors to remove any blue dots. We swipe, vacuumed, and mopped the floor. Hung the doors and Mark painted, here's the pics...Jim

Fascinated by the painting process in the garage. I am about a year out on blowing my truck apart for paint. This winter I have some other goals first.

Your work looks pretty amazing. Wondering how you keep the color consistent when doing the painting in parts as opposed to all at once when the truck is together? I'm thinking different temps, different humidity, different cans of paint might make one panel ever so slightly different than the one beside it.

Second question...why is the floor not covered? You mentioned mopping and vacuuming it. Did you put a sealer or something on the garage floor when building the paint booth?

First thanks so much for the compliments. Consistent color = might say I'm lucky, my shop is heated and AC, so we try to paint with the same temp, etc.. Most paint supply stores have reducers in Low - Medium - and High temp. Just by changing the reducer will help in keeping the paint coming from the gun more consistant.

Cans of paint. I buy my paint at a regular auto paint store. Their mix is very close, but I will normally take the cans of paint, pour into a new clean bucket, mix it all together, then pour back into each can. This gives a better chance of color being the same. This works great for non-metallic colors. Metallic colors are the ones that air pressure, distance from surface, speed, etc., that will make the colors seem to not match. Another thing is always paint the part as it will mount on the vehicle.

I DON'T have a paint booth, just a 30X40 shop, we seal off half the shop with plastic to keep it as clean as possible. Floor had a sealer put on 20 years ago, but with all the work, etc. it has worn off. We clean the floor each time to help with dust, etc.

Ray, still not 100% sure, but I think it was just bad batch, we watch everything real close to make sure it doesn't happen again. So far, so good...Jim

did you have ac in the shop? maybe see if the blue fluoresces under a black light. a friend of mine had funny blue dots on his paint after driving downtown and was screaming conspiracy theories (marking his car for surveillance, etc) till another friend, an HVAC tech, said it was spots of the dye they use in HVAC systems to find leaks, and sometimes a leak at the compressor gets pumped in the air all over in very small quantities.

not saying thats what it is, but if you have heard of the most interesting man in the world, my friend is probably the LEAST interesting man in the world and someone having him under surveillance was hilarious and outrageous, I was glad to hear he was wrong.
