Re: Used Parts Build

I am also pushing the engine back further. I am going to clearance the firewall a hair. Bad picture but check out where the first cylinder is compared to the front wheel center line. In total the engine is back 3 inches from the stock position.

Re: Used Parts Build

Started on my trans crossmember. I am thinking I might try to make something kinda like the Porterbuilt center section (but poorer and uglier....we'll see where that ends up).

Was going to use the old mount but later decided against it.

I always jig everything perfect and forget to prep the area to weld first...

Since I was looking at the "mig like tig" thread earlier

Dropped some weld into the channel of the backside

So far

Cut my next piece of tube and realized the company sent me 1.75'' end pieces so thats as far as I am going to get today.

Finished the crossmember for now. Ordered more tabs and bent tube to start the frame stiffener.

Re: Used Parts Build

Started drilling the holes for my crossmember and decided to work on something else (I hate drilling holes).
Decided to cut my tunnel up to use it to create the new tunnel.

Ended up moving it back and triming the front part back then made a filler plate in the center. Looks like I am only adding about an inch or so in height and most of it in the center.

Tried to make a filler piece that matches the original floor.

Where I left it for now

Re: Used Parts Build

More metal shaping...I get why the professionals charge so much!

Got low on gas so I pulled my tank to exchange it while I'm at work tomorrow since the welding shop is a couple blocks away

Sooooo since the tank was off, I used it to make some bends. I really want a shrinker/stretcher!

But what do I do with it now....jk

Re: Used Parts Build

I took today off just to work on my truck (I never take days off). Thought I would have got more done....

Once I did one side the second took half the time

I was running stringers and totally forgot about stitch welding. This looks much better than my stringers. Too bad I didnt think of it until I was almost done...

All done with the rear. I will start on the front this weekend. More curves....yay...

Re: Used Parts Build

Wasted a bunch of time trying to make one piece to fit the front of the tunnel before just patching it. Working extra slow...

Got my front bars in. Here is what I am thinking of doing.

Re: Used Parts Build

Started my welding class. Got about 10 of these:

and all the students work:

There are 15 MIG's, 4 O/A, 10 Stick, and a ton of metal fab stuff.
Didnt get a pic of the rest of the shop but check out their machine shop class...

I am going to take that next semester.
Then I bought this so I can practice between classes:

Re: Used Parts Build

Finished welding my floor, stripped it, and painted it.

It got dark before I could paint so I fish plated my notches since I hadnt got around to doing it. I had a bunch of 1/4'' steel...a bit over kill but whatever. Since I already was mixing paint I figured I'd paint them since I work slower than rust....

Re: Used Parts Build

Not much of a pic but it feels great to actually put something back together. The carpet almost fits. Need about an inch or so on the side but it is good enough to use the original one for now.

Re: Used Parts Build

No cool pictures but since it was 95 degrees out today I figured I'd do more dirty work.

Not perfect but I stripped the bottom of my cab and painted it in epoxy. The hvlp gun didnt like the angles so I am sure it is spotty and has runs but for the underside of my cab I am fine with it.

Re: Used Parts Build

Started to redo my motor mounts. I didnt want to build a bridge to the upper control arm and make it look half assed.

I have been having a ton of problems with my Alphatig. I just sent a request to return it through Amazon. All I can tell is that there is a gas problem. Tried all kinds of thing but it randomly has a flow or contamination issue...

Then....

Ended up using my mig to finish it. Really pissed that I spent all that time perping everything to then mig it....

Painting everything today. The gun broke in the middle so ignore the runs in the paint...

Re: Used Parts Build

I didn't really like the weld I did on the bottom of my SFBD. It didn't look up to my standard but I didn't fell comfortable just grinding it smooth. So I came up with this:

and welded them to the frame:

Did three of them on each side. Should be solid as can be.
Then I didn't like the por15 on there. It was starting to peal in some areas (and rock hard in others). It seemed like if you hit it just right it would come off. So instead of worrying about it I stripped it all off and shot it with epoxy instead.

Going to toss the engine and trans back in. Going to change the trans mount a bit (because I don't feel like drilling that many holes). Then start on the rear.

Engine in and clip on!

Gotta make an adjustment on the trans mount and pull the bed next week I hope.
