Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
I will get pictures tomorrow. Been doing some research the past few days, I found some things that have brought up some questions. No idea how much of the information I've found is correct, My exhaust manifolds numbered 3932465 are 69-70 specific, my Intake Manifold numbered 340266 are 73-81. And the Carb as I believe I said before is from a 1974 350. I know the block is a 350, 3970010 casting numbers are 350 69- late 70s. Im looking at motor mounts tomorrow to see about evidence of a motor change. If any of the dates ive said are incorrect please tell me.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
Oh and I have a leaking valve cover gasket and 1 bad valve cover, looks like they tightened it down to much and the tin started to curl out of shape.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
probably had an engine swap and those valve covers are famous for leaking, you can spend about $30.00 on a set of good rubber valve cover gaskets made by felpro, worth every penny, and they come with long metal pieces to spread the torque on the valve covers, I got mine at autozone

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
Going to look on Summit racing or Jegs for valve covers. I was recommended to get the Cast Aluminum covers.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
Verdict is, she had an Engine swap, according to the Nastyz28 forums Its an L65 165hp from a smaller passenger car. It seems to me like someone built the motor with what they had lying around. 72 block, 73-81 intake, 69-70 exhaust manifolds. Im almost afraid to look at the heads lol. Found the date tag for the th350 its 72, Spid calls for Turbo Hydramatic, so I believe its original.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
I went with cast aluminum, they are great, wont bend/warp like the sheetmetal ones and they look good, I used the expensive rubber gaskets on those as well, they are worth the investment

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
Finally heres a couple pics. Phone hasn't been wanting me to upload them. Heres some interior, its actually pretty clean. And the rusted out drivers side floor, and the patch it had. Probably gonna be a little dizzy, I still don't know why they upload like that or how to fix it

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
I pulled the radio and speaker yesterday, speaker is toast, so no music while im working, will have to continue using my phone. Finally doing a tune up this weekend, fluids, plugs & wires, filters. Some house work to do today so won't be doing much to the old girl today. Ill make sure to get more pics tomorrow when fast internet picks up and I can actually upload them. But for now here is a pic of the stickers on the back window. NRA, Green Mountain Boys Horse Association Vermont, and United States Pony Club. Seems the old girl has some history and has quite a life, If she could talk I can only imagine the stories she'd tell.

The stickers are staying, they'll go well with the Johnny Cash sticker I have to put on her. She will be working truck anyways. She'll haul plenty of horse grain for my fat horses

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
More pictures later today. Not sure what Ill do today, there's something I can be out there doing though. Also, I finally found a ratio tag on the front axles, 45-11 which I believe is 4.09? Would the rear be the same? I know 4.10 and 4.11 are within tolerance, so they're a possibility.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
Where did not you find those numbers? There should be a stamped tag on the front diff cover.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
I don't even know how to explain this mess. Its a miracle we managed to drive the truck home. None of the plug wires were in the right place, except Cylinder 1. I can't believe it, it was a mess!

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
How's it run now? It's a bit strange if the firing order was screwed up. It should of popped and done a lot of weird stuff..

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
I wonder if the timing chain is stretched and some one shuffled the plug wires on the distributor one prong over to get enough adjustment to get the distributor timing right. Don't ask me how I know about this. But that wouldn't explain why #1 was in the right spot.

Re: Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20
It was misfiring like crazy, but we just figured dead plugs. I changed plugs and she ran better but still misfiring as bad, Dad got to looking and noticed the plug wires, We got them straightened out and she's 10x better, I don't hear a miss
