Re: Bubba's recycling project

Gonna be a big weekend--- Found a Deluxe heater core at my local hometown Independent owner parts house in stock!!! on the shelf!!! It was upstairs in the way back area in a very dusty box. It took the counter guy about 10 minutes to find it but I was Impressed !!!
I bought the Deluxe core which is bigger than the Thrift-air core cause it looked to me like it would fit in the heater box with a little trimming and I wanted all the heat I could get!
The Deluxe Core is 9 -1/2"X 6 -3/8" X 2 -1/2" The Thrift air core is 7- 1/4" X 6- 3/8" X 2 -1/2 "
The piece that needs to be removed for the bigger core is already Indented on the aluminum heater box lid and will be machined out.
The Thrift Air Heater uses all outside air with no recirculation

Looks like a lot fun. I wonder why they don't have seat belts on motorbikes? or school busses or Army trucks?

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Cleaned up the firewall and welded in a patch for two holes I assume were for the cable option on the the deluxe version but were just leaking air now.
Cut out the section of the heater and mounted the new core fits great A new heater blower motor was installed and really puts out some air...and dust from the ductwork. Heater switch still works and I have all three speeds WAHOO!

Brought a Hydraulic Conduit bender home from work and bent new Exhaust pipe .. Yes a single pipe for a inline six

Size: 33.3 KB used 2" EMT conduit for pipe. It works quite well as it is a little thicker than muffler pipe and the price is free for short scraps of leftover stuff.

Muffler is a Brand new shorty glasspac which spent maybe 10 minutes installed on a snorkel-lift.
It was terribly loud and had to come off and a better muffler went on.
We were working in a big metal empty building and the crew objected strongly.
I wondered if it would be too loud for my truck but It sounds wonderful!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Summer is a busy time -- Kids are out of school and there is not a lot of time to work on the truck. Trying to work full time and farm too.
Finally got all the first cutting alfalfa hay in.. Glad the kids are old enough to help irrigate. They just like zooming around on the 4-wheelers.
Had a little spare time this weekend to work on the truck project.

LMC Truck -- from the 67-72 catalog. Made by Beam's..
nice quality and well built. Installed nicely with no problems.
The latching part is a little touchy as you pull it out to buckle up. You have to pull smoothly and steadily or it locks up.
I looked at my 71 and found no reason why the 71-72 seat belts would not fit into the 64 with a little help. (71 was the first year of required belts in trucks.)
I welded a nut onto a 4" X 4" plate and slid it up the wall into the cab corner.
The sheet metal is a little thin in the interior but it will not pull through.
I built steel plates for the bottom of the cab and drilled where the seams of the cab support join the floor.
It only needs to really hold just one time!!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Went to my favorite junk yard this morning and found a few things off a 66 C-10. I had told Murdoc about it last week and think he got there before I could get back. Some one got the steering column and fenders. Still has a good hood but I don't want to store a spare

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Installed my new junk yard turn signals and rewired the running lights and turn signals to the front and rear-I bought a new headlight switch and got it in today also.
Something is puzzling me ....
The front running lights shut off when the headlights are turned on but the back ones stay on. they both work in the clearance light setting(1/2 way out). They have two separate wires from the switch , front is Purple and brown goes to the back. both turn signals work and the 4-way flasher works. the switch just shuts off the front clearance lights when the switch is all the way out.
Any body want to check their truck lights out and let me know??

I had another idea for a Dash gauge insert -I bought a glove box door at the junkyard this morning and it is the same size and shape as the gauge bezel.....
Hmmmmm......... With a little trimming...It would be smoother and would blend in well. and I could move the switches down or hide them under the dash...

Size: 34.6 KB What do you think??? Also should I go with Black gauges or White?

Re: Bubba's recycling project

That's the way the front park lights work from the factory....they aren't lit when the headlights are on. If you would rather they stay on, you can do that by just jumpering two wires at the back of the light switch. I don't remember off hand which two, but it can be done with a modified scotch lock. That's how I did it on my Suburban. I'll have to see if I can find out which wires they are.....someone will likely beat me to it.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Thanks guys That should do it.
I also thought about wiring the front lights in with the key/ignition circuit for front running lights but they are not bright enough to do much good.
I need to pull the switch out again as the grounding circuit for the dash indicator/dome light is not making good contact with frame ground and the dash lights blink on and off if you wiggle the switch. It needs a better ground path .
Will add a door switch to turn on the dome light when the door is opened.

Vernski -Did I see you are building a shop this summer ? Congrats on a good summer project.

On the dash gauge Idea ,
Has anybody found a rectangular aftermarket speedometer??
I think too much roundness on the gauge cluster clashes with the squareness of a 60-66 truck.
The smaller gauges could be round but I have been searching for a square or rectangular speedometer and have not found one yet.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I've not seen an aftermarket rectangular speedo. You might look at some OEM instrument clusters and see if you find something that will work. For some reason the S10's come to mind, but that may not look right.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hi Bubba yeah the work on the new shop has slowed the progress on my truck to a stop till it's done. I was out of room in the little garage attached to the house and the little woman was making noise's about having to scrape ice off of her car windows in the winter. Now she can have her garage back it will make life more pleasant for both of us. The shop is 25' by 30' not a big one but one I could afford, it also has a 12' by 30' lean-too on one side it's gravel the shop is cement. I'm excited to get-er-done and back to my truck....Vernski

PS will post some progress pic's this coming week.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Well ,maybe just a couple pictures of my favorite rods seen at Northwest Motorfest in Boise Idaho this past weekend
This was a wild blown rat rod -Had semi truck super single tires (They use just one wide tire instead of duals)
Your head sticks out the top of the body and you look around the motor.
I have seen it before at shows and cruises and yes it is a driver.
