Bringing the '65 back to life

I bought the Raptor kit that comes with 4 bottles of bed liner, a bottle of activator and the spray gun. I used two bottles of the liner material; one for each coat. On the second coat, I turned up the air to 60 psi and shot the bed liner stuff from about 18-inches away to give it a more smooth texture. Covers very well and easy to use.

That's pretty much exactly how I did mine and I am very pleased with the results, also. What all are you seam sealing underneath?

Thanks! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I bought the same 4 bottle kit with the activator and spray gun for Dad for Christmas.

Any weld/panel seams that could trap moisture. I'm sure I'll post a picture when I do it.

Looking at the weather forecast for this week, I really doubt that the frame will be going to the car wash or that the cab will see any seam sealer. I have some work scheduled on a customer car this coming weekend, so it may be another week before I get back to work here.

Well, scratch that. Dad just called to tell me he was trailering the chassis to the car wash as we spoke.

We took advantage of the above freezing weather today and disassembled the frame. It's upside down on the trailer along with the front crossmember/suspension for another trip to the quarter car wash for a second round of degreasing. Since it's supposed to dive back into the single digits tonight, it'll likely be a little bit before that happens.

Before you hit the coin car wash do you pre-soak with any type of de-greaser?

Yep. It gets sprayed down thoroughly with de-greaser beforehand. The first round went well, but the underside of everything still needs the crud blown off of it, so it's going back upside down for round two.

After a four week hiatus due to an especially brutal winter, working on other vehicles, and other obligations, I was able to get back to work on the cab yesterday.

First up, a poll: What does the factory mark on the firewall shown below say? Chevy? A434? Something else?


I cleaned up the firewall, then welded up the holes for the three replaceable line clips, along with the hole for the clutch rod. The factory 3-speed will not be making a reappearance.

Looking good! Its been cold here too, tougher to get motivated to work on projects and grab ice cubes that say snap on or craftsman. Need a tool box heater!

Did a little searching here on the site and discovered that the firewall marking was "C1434", the model of the truck (1/2 ton shortbed fleetside).

Spent some time in the shop today blocking out the firewall. Like the saying goes, sand until you think you're done...then sand some more.





I also started brushing on the seam sealer.




Quitting point for today:



The firewall sans thirteen of its original holes and with a really light coat of primer.

Spent the morning at a swap meet and the afternoon finishing up sealing seams. Hope to prime and paint the underside next weekend, provided the weather cooperates.

We took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and put some hours in on the truck. Dad ground down the rivet heads for the transmission crossmember, and we knocked it out of the frame. The frame is ready for blasting.





We also shot the last coat of primer on the underside of the cab. I'm hoping to get back over there this week once it warms up (it's sleeting here currently) to shoot a couple coats of satin black.

That would be a old WWII-era practice bomb hanging from my childhood club house.

I meant to snap a pic of the seam sealer supplies tonight, but it slipped my mind. I should be over there again Thursday, so I'll try to do so then.


We've finally reached the point where paint starts going on instead of only coming off. Shot the first coat of satin black on the underside of the cab tonight.
