Re: Not so budget 3-link build
Just out of curiosity, what did you do with the old welder?

Lol, glad you like it.
Built strut rods. Getting some time in with the new MIG welder. Car is completely wired and plumbed, aside from the front two air lines. Strut rod mounts on the axle also act as a brace.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
They are by SLP, and I believe they are the Loudmouth muffler? I could be wrong. But SLP is stamped into them, so that I am sure of.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
I pulled a straight 26 hour shift, with a friend helping me for 12 of them, to get this car done for a show. Started Thursday at 8AM, and finished Friday at 10AM. Owner picked it up at 11AM and drove to the show.
Built front bump stops to limit the down travel. Also had to cut a hump off the oil pan and shorten the pickup tube to keep the pan off the ground. And a couple pictures taken right after it went on it's first test drive. It needs to come back for some little things, but it made the 600 mile round trip pretty much problem free. I fixed a couple of fitting leaks at the hotel, that was it really.

That car looks amazing! Along with all the truck fab work I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread and it has given me a lot of motivation to become a better fabricator. Simply amazing

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
Thanks.
A while back someone asked about the spindles I was working on for myself. Here is a little teaser, of the rough shape I am starting with. I sent out some drawings to have some more pieces laser cut for them, as well as for my sheetmetal control arms.

I am building my own frame. So they are not vehicle specific.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
Its just the rails from the firewall(ish) to the front bumper at this point. It's sitting on the frame table under a bunch of stereo stuff. I will try to remember to move some stuff and take a picture of it.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
you mentioned you learned most from books. If it would not be too much trouble, could you post some literature you suggest for a nubie?
Im really looking to getting my truck done very mildly, then come back after a while and get it totally custom after getting a few other projects on down the road. i would like to plan out as much as possible, and get some good experience. If you have an ISBN# that would be GREAT, if not a few titles would be nice. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
I learned a lot from books. But most of what I know comes from real world experience, and people I know.
The 3 books I have are: Chassis Engineering - Herb Adams Tune To Win - Carroll Smith Engineer To Win - Carroll Smith

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
Believe me, I know what life has to offer for learning. Still doing that. I just have tons of questions I dont understand and figure this would be a good place to start.
Nice builds by the way, and thanks for the reply. Bill |

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
If you don't have a general understanding of suspension going in, I would start with Herb Adams book. It's very basic, and not a lot of detail, but it will get you started. Carroll Smith's books could be pretty intimidating for someone without a decent understanding of suspension to begin with. His books are more refining.
I think everyone should read the chapter in Engineer To Win about the proper use of bolts though.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build
Here are some random things I have been working on over the last couple weeks.
A little random for me, but I made and installed a custom wall mount for a flat screen TV. I fastened it with drywall anchors. I can hang off of it, so it should last. I got some rings rolled from the local steel shop, and built a stripper cage. I first built a fixture to hold the uprights square in all directions, which took more time than building the cage itself. It worked really well though. I was able to tack all of the uprights in place, then sit the other ring on top, and tack in down. The guy that owns it stuck it on his home made raft after getting it painted pink. He's actually a member on here.
