Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Worked on the old gal for a couple of hours tonight, made some progress. Fuel lines are built and cushion clamped to the frame. Put the rear bumper on for a test fit. Tomorrow I will work on front brake lines, and if that goes well I will move on to the wiring, (computer and gauges).

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Updates from the weekend... Finished the hard lines for the brakes, just have to build mounts for the steel to rubber connection for the fronts. Connected the brake pedal push rod to the CPP booster and master cylinder. Also mounted the brake pedal pad to match my throttle pedal. Installed the Lokar throttle cable. Had to make a couple of washers for the cable bracket on the manifold, see picture.
Thanks are due for n2billet and 68 short step for imparting some C10 wisdom, thanks guys you've helped keep my project moving!

Ok, I love those wheels and caps. They look like 96-02 Astro caps. What holds them on? Are those 15" rally wheels? I would love to have a set like that!

I haven't started the gauges yet, need to finish the brakes first. After that I am going to do the engine harness and gauges. They are from Classic Instruments, I got them off of eBay for $809 shipped. You tell them what eng/trans you have and they include the correct senders etc. Thank you for fronting me the axles, glad the replacements finally showed. Those guys sure are getting slow with their shipping... Hey are you going to Cruisin' the Coast this year?

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
You are correct they are 96-02 Astro caps on 15x7 front and 15x8 rear rallies. I used factory S10/Astro lug nuts and the black covers hold the cap on. I really like them and I think they will look better when I add deep trim rings.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Still contemplating how I am going to mount the front brake steel line to rubber hose connection to my cross-member. I am using the 73-87 cross-member so the factory mounts aren't there. In the meantime, and after getting some great info from 68 Short Step, I built my power steering lines! Only took about an hour. It is awesome to be able to eliminate the hours, days, or weeks searching for the correct part numbers, and buying the right parts the first time saves money too! That is just one of the outstanding things about this site...

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Run your brake lines thru the frame like they did on the 73-87 trucks.
Otherwise you will have to add a tab to the crossmember.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Well, I already built the hard lines for the other way... There is a hole in the 68 frame forward of the cross-member, can I use that as the steel/rubber interconnect point if I choose to go the other route?

You can use the 73-87 rubber brake hoses also since they are so much longer and have a "bulkhead" type fitting made on the end of the hose.

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Checked and one of the local parts stores has hoses in stock. I'll get a set and look into swapping the hard line to the front of the cross-member. Thanks for the new angle!

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
That's how they're run on my '70-- works well, and there's a tab on the '73-up lines to attach to the upper control arm as well to keep 'em from floppin' around...

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Any chance you can throw me a pic of your set up? I am curious how the lines route from the master cylinder to where they go through the frame.

A couple more things have been marked off the list... well one is are a redo. Transmission cooler is mounted and lines are built. I redid the front brake hard lines. and started to layout the engine wiring harness...

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Here are my latest trials to overcome:
1.) 73-87 style rubber brake hoses hit the upper ball joint nut... searching for an alternative. 2.) Starter bolts for a 5.3L are non-existent except for online, dealer couldn't even get them. And if he did they would be $20 each... EACH! So, I ordered 2 of them from Rock Auto for $7.84 total... SHIPPED. Not sure what the deal is with that one. 3.) Wiring... nothing else to say, the one word says it all!

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
Sorry I missed your question- mine are routed 73-87 style- prop valve on front crossmember. Yours looks like it turned out nicely. I've had luck just bending the brake lines to clear the nut...

Re: Project "Just an Old Truck"
I guess I can give that a try... the hoses aren't doing me any good if I don't. I worry about weakening them and risking a rupture.
