Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Didn't take any pictures but got the power steering all buttoned up on Saturday. The boy is working this week on removing the old cross braces from underneath the original bed floor so we can install them under the new floor.

Had to order another fan relay and some other small parts (Transmission cooler lines, and Temp Sending unit) so we can get this thing ready to fire. Also, I figured out the radiator I bought didn't have an bung for the fan relay so I ordered one we will have to Heliarc it in.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We got some stuff done over the Christmas break.

First picture is of the tranny cooler lines. I had a local shop sweat some fittings on them and I will run rubber hose to the radiator.

Second picture is of the steering wheel my son got for Christmas.

Third picture is of the engine with the harness all strung out. I still need to clean up the wiring but it is basically done. I bumped it over on Saturday which was exciting. Need to do a couple more small things like plumb the radiator and fill it with fluids. Also need to wire the fan relays and mount the computers but we should be making smoke by the weekend.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

I was able to spend part of New Year's Day working on the truck. Finished the fan relays, and the transmission cooler lines. Today, they need to find some radiator hoses and add antifreeze and fuel and it should start.

I don't know why the pictures are uploading sideways. Anyone know how to fix it?

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Are you using the 3-relay setup?

If you're using an iphone, you have to take the picture holding the phone sideways with the home button on the right.

3 relays for the fan or the harness? The fan was 2 and the harness has 3.

For the fans. It's a GM schematic that allows both fans to run half speed at the low temp setting and then both run full speed at the high temp setting. This setup gets its triggers from the PCM. I like it because it pulls air across the whole radiator all the time and is quieter.

BadAZZ!!

qq, do your tailpipes clear the rear axle when fully suspended in c-notch? I had to bend mine up after the cross-member or they would hit when fully suspended up to bump-stops in c-notch. Just curious.

The exhaust sounds really good. I will go back through your thread, but if you didn't say, what are the exhaust details? mufflers? H or X pipe?

Tailpipes should clear without issue. Exhaust was built in house with use of mandrals, no x or y. Mufflers are Flowmasters. The quiet ones. I can't remember what they call them.

Yeah that's probably the way to do it. I just did a fan relay kit and wired them separately.

Your truck looks good and is coming along nicely.

Thanks.

I'm jealous of you guys with coil spring rear ends for the ride quality, traction characteristics, and clearance for mufflers to be hung up high.

The last one of these we built (link in signature) was a leaf spring truck. Each has it's own set of advantages and challenges that's for sure.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

On Saturday, I was able to get most of gauges working. Still need to run a line for the oil pressure gauge and order a speedo converter.

I also installed the check engine light. It's currently lit because I haven't gotten my air intake in and installed so the MAF is plugged in but just sitting on top of the intake.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Small little update from the weekend. I am cleaning up the wiring still and got the Neutral Safety Switch all finished up as well. I also installed a radiator overflow. Picked it up from LMC and mounted it using the factor windshield wiper fluid bracket welded to the bracket that came with the catch can.

Nicely done. The integration keeps the OE look.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Nice progress! Where are you guys with the bed? Hows that coming along? I'm looking forward to see the fuel door mods and set up.

Honestly, we haven't touched it since the last pictures. Once school is out, the boy will jump back on it and hopefully knock it out relatively quickly. The front clip is stripped but nothing done on it either. Hopefully, next step is to get the doors painted and hung so I can wrap up the interior.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Spent a few hours on the truck last weekend and was able to get the air cleaner/filter assembly installed. I bought a cheap kit off amazon and had to cut it down and built a support arm off the battery box. Came out pretty nice though.

I also finally took the time to build a bracket to mount the DBW gas pedal. This was something I have been dreading but I think it came out nice.

This past weekend we finished the sound deadening, and installed the carpet and seat. The boy got to putt the truck around the facility a few times which was fun.
