I have that same welder......do yourself a BIG favor and throw the wire that came with there welder away...its trash.....go down to air-gas on 3rd and oak street and get some Miller or lincoln flux core wire.....it will work alot better

I had read that on this forum, so I went to Home Depot and got some lincoln wire. I'll take a pic of what I'm using, just in case its not right. I'm still learning the wire feed welding technique. Arc, I can do, wire feed is more intimate. Lol. More touchy feely as my da would say.

OK, so after butchering the weld on the toe-kick panel, I decided to do what my da always did with his arc setups. I created 2 test jobs and went thru every setting on my little Harbor freight welder. The pics below show each of the feed settings and either Max or Min Power. I think no5 seems to be the best for penetration and looks like a good spot weld using the min power.

I also cut my patch panel for the drivers side floorpan. The repro panel had the cab mount hole pressed in the wrong location, so I had to cut it out. I will prob trim the panel for what i need further before welding it in. I have to drill the holes for the lower pillar and bolt it up, so everything is in the right position when I weld it. Is it better or worse to leave old material under the new panel or just cut it out altogether?

your Trucks looking great David....for a guy that has not done alot of welding your really charging head first into it....thats REAL hot rodding..cut-patch-weld...

You'll want to cut out all the bad sheet metal, and fit your new pieces as a butt joint. A lap joint is certainly easier, but that leaves a perfect place for rust to form again.

From practicing on the butt joints, I actually preferred welding that type of joint. I thought that totally removing the bad was the way to go. I am going to cut out the majority of the thinning/pitted sheet metal. It's good practicing on the cab floor coz it's not gonna be seen

When using patch panel, I always cut out the bad areas and cut the patch panel to fit...instead of cutting the original area to fit the patch panel. The more original material, that is not damaged, you are able to leave in place, the less work it is to get it back together properly.

Thx a million for all of your inputs about the patching. Last weekend was a busy one, but not on the truck. I had to change a fuel pump on the I-ROC. That in itself was a fun job. The exhaust had to come off, jack the car way up, remove the sway bar, remove the cross member, lower the axle way down, and finally drop the tank. It turns out the neoprene sleeve on the old pump had turned to goo and completely covered the strainer and got into the lines. I had to switch the pump, clean out the lines, weld the pump holder and re-install everything. It was fun to drive it afterwards, except the right rear would lock up everytime I touched the brake pedal. Any, ways, that job is done, so back to the truck this weekend. I took saturday off to watch the Englan V USA game in the world cup, so I might get to work on it after that.

the I-ROC sounds like it was a Big ol' Pain in the butt David....Be glad old chevy trucks are alot more simple.
Hey If ya need a hand on your Truck this weekend Give me a call....I Have the weekend free..I'll come over and see if we can Get some of it done...I dont have any plans and the weather is suppose to be pretty nice..

Thx Kelly, Yeah, if the weather is supposed to be nice, maybe I can get that bed finished and get the interior walls of it in Rhino-liner. Then all I have to do is get primer on it and it can be protected. I'm thinking about putting the cab back on the frame. I'm most likely gonna go with another th350, so I won't have to take it back off anytime soon.

I'm still wanting those doors....Beg beg beg .....
Ya if you want to get the bed in Primer I'll bring my sander over and we can knock it out in no time at all........

I just mean, I am not switching to a 700R4 or anything, so I won't have to go messing around with the location of the support. That th350 needs a rebuild. It's the one I got with the truck. That's the next big payout after the exhaust and the rear mounted fuel tank. ( I will hook you up with the doors. We can pull em down and figure out if they are all worth it or not)
