Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I think the truck has had rockers put in it at one point in it's life, but the cab mounts and typical rust areas look really good (to me ?)

The door panels were curling up so I can understand the metal plates on the doors. I'll tack up the holes and grind them smooth / paint and the will be tough to see. The headliner is there, but it is drooping just a tad. I'll fix that .. I think it will clean up really nice.

It does still have the black pad / cover thing over the gas tank but it has slid down over the years ..

A good upholstry shop should be able to fix that foam in the seat .. you think?

The tailgate looks really good but the bed is shot. I will be pulling the entire bed floor, replacing the rear inner wheel wells with some really good original west coast GM fender wells and all new wood bed floor / supports. The front bed panel will also be replaced.

It looks like either cheap bedliner or maybe house paint in the bed ?? It's rough ! .. but not for long.

More ..

Talking to Special-K, this might be a Super Custom? Not sure. Can you tell? Special-K mentioned the Z84 pkg on the SPID + the custom seat / headliner might be a Super Custom specific thing. I have no idea.. I hope (and feel like) he's right!

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

The driver's side still has quite a bit of orange peel on it. The pasenger side has been cut and buffed and you can definitely tell it. More to come soon! I hope to order my suspension stuff in about 10 days. I am going to collect everything and just take a week off work. Hang out with dad and just do it all at one time. Suspension, wheels, tires, sway bars, complete interior, and new wood bed floor. Just sit the truck on stands, strip it and come back up. All the parts onsite and just do it.

Anyone heading to TN anytime soon ? Mid May - Early June?

great idea getting everything there and ready to go , then just hammer it out !! I dont understand how your cab supports can be so nice and the bedfloor be so rusty !! that is weird !

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Hey CC69Rat, I'm loving this truck more each time I see it.

What do the GMC fender emblems say?
Also,... if you change interior color,... I will be interested in a good set of '70 Gold seat belts. Keep me in mind.

Also another question for the GMC experts.
What year were the "nicer" side marker lights available on the GMC's? (71-72 only?)
Should your marker lights be the plain red and yellow version?
Or are those correct?

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Very cool truck....as Keith said...loving it more and more the more pics you post.

On the lower trim...are you going to leave it as is, paint it black, or put new woodgrain on? I have replacement woodgrain vinyl for the trim in a roll (repop)- well I have NOS too but don't think you'd want to pay that for this truck

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I think maybe the stuff they put on the bed made it hold water. I don't know, but it appears to be the original bed. (?) Maybe once it dried up and cracked it allowed water to seep underneath and actually made it rust more.. hard to say but its all coming out soon

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Probably a white oak with no stain, just cleared and polished.. polished strips and all hardware. We will likely need to sand / blast the mystery coating off the bedsides and re epoxy prime / paint
While i'm spraying the inners and header panel i can do the inner bedsides too.

Just part of an old truck i guess!

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Me either Shawn. I'd just like to have everything together so we could do all in one, strip everything off and just take a week or so to do it. 'Extreme SWB makeover'

I mean a complete suspension, interior, bed, wheels and tires Gut and re-do. It will look like a different truck

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I have been working more to try and bring the paint up. You can't tell a lot about it, I took this from my cell this morning and it was still dark .. so .. it's kinda crappy.

The driver's bedside is super slick now. I am going to buff it when I get home later. this is 1500/2000 wet. I pulled the SG emblem off and the rear marker light just to make it cleaner. (so I wouldn't get wax and crap in the letters. I will put it back on of course )

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

So do wet sand with 1500 then 2000 and then wax or do you use a rubbing compound somewhere in there?

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Yes, 1500 on the initial cut and 2000 to really lay it out slick. Then use a variable speed buffer with a wool pad and a 3M compound. I start slow and usually end up around 1700 rpm. Once it's fairly slick I use a swirl remover on about 18-1900 rpm and a white foam pad. Then hand polish with Mirror Glaze #7 or the 3M hand glaze.

The paint on my GMC is probably 12-15yrs old so it's not going to be perfect but it sure looks a lot better than it did. I am definitely getting the dead stuff off.

I have never seen a shiney orange ! lol.

Sounds like your buffing is going well... Have you ever tried the Trizact foam 3000 on a da and the 1500 dry before works well. Are you wet sanding or using a da for the 1500?
Nice Truck BTW!!!!

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I was blocking all of the peel with 1500 wet on a Durablock. Round/ flat as needed. I'm pretty particular so trust me whan I say it's flat. I also had some black touch up paint I used to get the little stuff first, then 1500 / 2000 wet over that to blend it all in. Once it's buffed you'll never see it.

Also .. Would this truck look out of place with this wheel? I just want something different. 5 spoke / Coys / TT2's look killer but .. just for a change maybe?
