Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

I like the flush mount mesh idea... what about running the mesh inside the "v" bevel front to back, it would look like a big chrome stripe....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

A couple of thoughts. Since the engine moves due to the flex in the motor mounts, you need to allow for that movement. I would recommend enlarging the holes in the hood and make a plate that allows for a seal between the carbs and the hood.

As for what to do on the outside. Looking at the hood, you could make a scoop that uses the vee. Start at the front and raise the top, following the lines of the steps in the hood that are inboard of the turn signals. Leave it open at the back for air. It is a lot of metalwork, but would definitely look different.

You could also do the same thing, but localizing the fill to just the cutout area. Add another vee at the start and go from there.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

Those ideas are exactly what I was thinking. But, then again, I got to thinking about driving in the rain. I would be screwed. I'm going to have to just try and find one of those scoops off of the Ford super duty trucks, like you said Jon. That will be the most practical, era correct and look good too!

I'll probably end up putting that scoop on the 60-61 hood, and then patching and selling the 62-66 hood.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

Cort, glad you got it. It was by chance that I looked on e-bay that day. Imagine my luck when I found 2 scoops! I thought "these can't be that hard to find if I can find two the first time I looked". Guess we got extremely lucky!

Yeah we did get lucky! They shipped it out yesterday morning and right now I am fighting hell trying to get the right clutch parts for my Jimmy. I got another thread going on that disaster. I'll update it a little later.

That tri-carb set up is sick! Great work.

Here is a mock up.....excuse the mess in the background. Spring cleaning is being side tracked by projects.

The arch is a near perfect match for the arches on the front of the hood. And it fits so well in the valley on the hood you'd think the scoop was made for it. Good choice!

No doubt!!! I'm wondering if the tilt on the front will match the windshield pillar too. Sweet!!! Cool stuff Cort....stop polishing the trailer and work on the truck; stuff all the mess in a spare closet.

From the top of the intake manifold to the top of the oil bath air filter is 8 1/4". The oil bath it self is about 5" or so.

Are you trying to find an original set-up?

Thanks Cort,
Yeah I was wanting to go back original...I found one at the salvage yard in a 63 truck but it's looks to be to big and has a small neck on it...

Your hood is going to look real nice with the scoop on it.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs

4d,

It looks like that one is made for the Holley 1904 also. Is the very bottom a clamp type? If so, that's exactly what it is for but I thought everything from '63 up had two barrels......
