Re: Cross Member Drop?
Finally got money in my pocket, drawing of the bed sides I need and Half of a rear fender in my truck ready to drop off at the sheet metal shop today to get everything I need for the stretched step side bed and fenders. Wouldn't you know it, they're closed on Friday's. Looks like it will be Monday before I can get this stuff underway. Dang it!
Plan is since I have to go to the shop to buy the new metal sheet anyway, why not just let them bend it for me too since they've got the equipment. So I will get brand new bed sides which is simply flat sheet with a 90 degree bend and then a roll at the top. Then for the fenders I cut one of mine in half and I'll let them bend me a pair of 32" long panels which match the cross section of the fender half that I give them. Then all I have to do is weld in the extension panels and the fenders will be done. I'll remove the stock stake pockets from my old bed and weld then to the new bed sides and they will be basically done as well. I can't wait!

Re: Cross Member Drop?
I did drop off my "order" at the sheet metal shop Monday. Waiting to ge the phone call that it's ready to pick up then I can get back into metal work. That beats body work any day!
I'm hoping today might be the day, but I wont know till the phone rings. You can't push these guys of it will cost you double. Whenever they work it in is fine by me.

Re: Cross Member Drop?
I finally now have the sheetmetal for the new longer bedsides and fender extensions. The hardest part is finally off to a really nice start. I only had enough time this weekend to weld up one of the fenders but it went really well...

Re: Cross Member Drop?
Wow! Did you make those pieces? They fit great.
BTW...I picked up a set up of those shorty headers a few weeks ago. I test fit them and it looked like it might be a tight fit hooking them up to the exhaust because the headers come close to the crossmember. Thoughts?

On the headers, Mine won't be hard to hook up at all with a tight radius bend. I honestly haven't looked at that very hard because it doesn't look like it will be a problem for me. In a stock application I don't know.

You are a meticulous fabricator. I dont think there will be any chance of you pulling up next to another truck w/the same mods. Very unique and inspiring!

Re: Cross Member Drop?
sweet ride, I like the two rear axles...never even seen one like it , on your R&P how did you end up connecting the tie rods to the spindles? I am going to do a R&P on my 62 but was looking more at the later truck racks, would be nice to get a rack with tie rods that have the same taper
anyway...keep up the great work !! |

Re: Cross Member Drop?
Unfortunetly I've not done anything with it since Spring. My "wifes side" of the garage has a Lamborghini project in it right now and I have to get it mobil enough to move it out "before cold weather". We had snow Saturday and I scraped frost this morning at 28 degrees so the rush is on. The Lambo is in the way of being able to work on the truck but I'm hoping by the dead of winter to be back on the truck instead. More to come for sure.

Re: Cross Member Drop?
Here's the Lambo I picked up in July.
It was a bare fiberglass body and I don't want to do it the conventional Fiero route. To me a mid engine car needs the correct longitudinal mounted engine (front to back) not transverse. So I ended up using a Dodge 3.5 drivetrain, Porsche 944 front end, and built a tube chassis. It will be rolling this week and probably running before Thanksgiving. Hope to have it drivable under it's own power before Christmas so I can move it around the yard much more easily.
