Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Thanks a lot. I've been really busy this week--but mostly with the other truck! My wife's uncle was parting out a '70 GMC and I've been picking anything that was salvagable off of it. I have made some progress on the Suburban, I did get some good parts to use on the suburban, like door handles, sun visors, etc. I guess I need to update my pictures.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Very nice as usual. I think you need some cup holders for the back seat in the rear of that console.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I was originally going to do that, but the back did not end up flat. The fiberglass warped in that section. The rear seat has a nice cup holder, but I can't fold it down I need the seat.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
That is a very good question. I might hide the gauge in the dash or make a pod. I want keep it classy. The swichtes will be shifter paddles on the stearing wheel. Uh No , that would be dangerous. I'm still looking for ideas?

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I'm Glad the console turned out well. Thanks for the kind words from every one. Last night I glued the foam at the front because it was pushing down on the head liner. I used two adjustable mops. Tonight I picked up some vinyl for the head liner. I used spray adhesive and hot glue on the edges. The hard part was getting the panel to fit back in the bow.
The only way was to only put one side in the groove and have the other side rest on top. the front section still bows a little so I'll have the add something to stiffen it.

Yes! The paint is finally finished. Here is were I was Saturday finishing up the drip-check sealer and masking off the rest of the truck. I took off the hatch and prepped the hatch seal.
It helps to have a peace of plastic 10' X 80'.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Well, I spent an hour trying to find the spring to my paint gun. It seems that my kids were playing in the garage and put it in a large box of bolts. After calming down for another hour I started painting.
I had a little orange peal. No problem, Just wet sand with 1200 grit sand paper and soapy water. I used Meguiar's Solo Cut & Polish to gain that shine.

You have done an outstanding job on every part of this build. You should be very proud of all your work. So what is this "One for the road" build you speak of?

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Well, I'm not trying to keep a secret. It is a '71 long bed chyenne, (it is the one I bought and posted a picture of in April.) I plan on converting it into a short bed with some up grades. I've been collecting parts for over a month now, my wife's uncle does metal recycling and he's come across some really good stuff lately; a '70 GMC, a '70 Chevy tailgate and fender, stuff like that. I've just been putting the finishing touches on the Burb and getting it ready for the shows this summer. "One for the road" Will be a truck I can drive daily and will be reliable and economical. Basis is a '71 Chyenne, 4.3 Vortec engine, with overdrive auto transmition. I've got my short bed frame cleaned up and painted black all ready for the conversion. I'll start my post sometime in July.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I received my compressor Tuesday and I also bought a 5 gallon air tank. Its only rated to 125psi, but I really don't need any more than that. I also made a sign for shows, the bottom says it all.
I bought two sets of stencils. I used acrylic water based paint for the letters and clear coated after words for protection from the weather.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure the award is for the vehicle that you would take to make out on a date in. My wife agrees.
Have you seen the windows? I haven't done anything on the Suburban to day, it's my wife's birthday. I do have some old pictures of the suburban I will post later today. For all the time I've spent on the Suburban I figured I can give my wife one day to do what she wants.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
Here are some pictures from 1989 of before it was painted the first time. Notice the after of the lower molding. The painter ripped the old off and didn't want to pay the extra to do it right. The paint job was good other than the rust was not taken care of and it came right back.
I want to thank Mike for taking such good care of the suburban over the years. I can't take credit for all of the work that has been done to the 'burb. His time and effort into the beginning bodywork and the up keep of the engine and drive train really saved the 'burb from becoming another parts vehicle. The suburban served your family for many years and I feel it an honor to pass it on to my family for years to come. The award I received belongs to you just as much as me for all the love you put into the suburban. Thanks guys.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I finally met my first board member, Babyblueoval flew all the way from Arkansas to help me put in a carrier bearing. (Thanks for the help.)
Wednesday night we went out to dinner. Took the burb, and noticed a clunking when I accelerated. When we got back we looked underneath and noticed the carrier bearing was fine but the mounting bracket was broken. Thursday night, we went to get the part and he helped me put it in. I will be looking forward to your Blazer build thread. While the drive shaft was out, I decided that I'd put a coat of black on it. I have a car show tomorrow, Taylorsville Dayzz, where I should meet a few more board members. I'll post some pictures later.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread
I had the exact same thing happen to my carrier bearing on my 72 LWB, and i replaces it, and that one broke as well, so i put a little piece of rubber between the crossmember mounting plate and the carrier bearing and that seemed to work, just beware that it could break again...looks great as always man, nice job....
