Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I pulled out the blazer gas tank I bought a while back. The place I got it from has a policy of punching holes to drain the gas. That sucks, but not that hard to fix. I used a wire wheel to clean up the rust, and scaped the goo from the small leak from a previous patch. I pulled the metal from around the hole the best I could, then used gas resistant epoxy to patch the small holes. I am going to use a tank sealent inside the tank.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This weekend I've been working on getting the rust and the holes taken care of. I cut two sections of the small support out behind the wheels. I welded in two patch pieces that I cut from the long bed section I removed earlier. I also notched the rear support for the gas tank.

I also cut the corner of the tire well and welded a piece on. Three out of the four need replacing.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Here's the gas tank notch, I also cut out the two side pieces and welded in some new ones.

This next weekend, I'm going to try and get the supports back in and get it all cleaned up for paint. See ya next week.

You're fast! Your truck is looking very nice so far. After seeing you're pics I feel lucky living in Cali where we don't get too much rust. I'll be checking in periodically to see the progress. Love restoring trucks!!

Thanks. It's been almost a year now, and it's come along way for sure. It's hard for me to believe its the same truck. Utah is known for bad rust from the salting of the roads in the winter.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Man I am such a slacker, but I did get some work done. Got the support welded back on the bed and got the entire thing undercoated. I also cleaned my gas tank and sealed it with KBS Gold standard. It's been so humid here I took two days for the inside of the tank dry. In four days it should be dry enough to fill. Which should give me time enough to mount the tank.

Thanks. I guess if had some money to spend I would have a lot more motivation.

In the last two days I have filled my gas filler in the cab and mounted the gas tank. I guess your right.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This is how I mounted my gas tank.
I took some L-metal I got from work and made a rectangular support that simply bolts right to the frame sandwiching the tank to the frame. I was also able to run my fuel lines for the tank.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Here are some pics of the fuel filler. I concaved the piece by hammering it on the cement. It's crude but it works.

I picked up my paint today and was surprised it only came to $160. One gallon of medium blue, quart of white with reducer. I still have some clear left over from the 'burb I need to use up.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

you mentioned that you still had manual brakes....

go to the junkyard, pull the booster off a power brake truck, , undo the rod that hooks to the brake pedel, go home take your mc off, install booster where it would normally go, and put brake pedal rod on, adjust brakelite (pita) and hook up vacum lines, and bam power brakes...leme find the faq on it...

Hey I could use that booster tip too. !

Truck is looking a lot better. I'm glad to see people save trucks that have a lot of rust like that. Awesome !

It's on my to do list. The last time I went to the scrap yard, I found zip in good shape. I've looked in the faq section and there are a few good posts on power brake swaps, I'll probably go with a '73 and up booster because they are so common...you just have lengthen the rod a bit. I guess it's about time I made a trip back to the scrap yard.

Thanks. I'm getting excited to get it on the road.
I wouldn't say this truck has a hard time stopping. It stops fine, it just takes a lot of pressure on the peddle to stop.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Sunday I dusted off the old paint gun and shot the inside of the cab. Here are some pics.

Basecoat

Clearcoat

Today I put the dash back together put some gas in the tank and fired it up for a minute. Next week I'll paint the top so I can install the windshield and back window.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Well here is some blue and white two-tone for you.

This weekend, I painted the cab including the firewall. I can see why most guys paint one solid color, it's so much more time masking everything off. I think it's worth all the extra work.

I know ya'll like pics!

I added some silver metal flake to the clear. Here it is in the sun:chevy

Today, I tinted and re-installed the back window. Using a small rope, I pulled the seal into place starting at the bottom and working my way up to the top. My wife pulled the rope while I held the window in, it was much easier on my hands and only took 15 minutes.

That's awesome! I hope you found some good seats. I am often motivated by other builds I find on this site. Good luck with your truck.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I've got good news and bad news.

The bad news is my server is down, so no pictures.

The good news is I got my windshield in without breaking it.

The windshield took me about an hour, I used the old rope trick. It worked like a charm and saved my fingers. I only needed help lifting the windshield in place, but once there I was able to do everything else myself.

It's not invisible, we had a freak snow storm and a polar bear just happened to walk in front of the camera.

Whenever I post some good pictures my server goes down, Go figure.

Take a look now.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This week I got a lot done on the truck. Back window, windshield, and some body work on the fenders.

Here is my rear-sway bar. It's from a 90's suburban. The end links are from my brother's MR2. I drove it around the block and it handles like a dream.
