Bodywork progress!!!! Whatttttt!

Well, we're getting closer to paint.

Cab is in primer and being blocked out. Fenders, hood, doors, and cowl are ready for paint.

I also picked a new paint color today and had it mixed at the request of the painter so no turning back now. I will not reveal that color until the paint is done though. At this point I am cautiously ecstatic!!!

Looks like you have the right body guy now. I just stop by my body guys place yesterday and mentioned your situation to him about this being your 4th shop. He said it's common, the guys have good intentions but take on too much or just don't have good work ethics or motivation to get things done !

He's going to start working on my bed next week now that I have my chassis almost ready to have the body set on it.

Got a little more done wit the vent windows. Here are a few pics of the process. This is about the size of the rivets that are steel.

I drilled all the rivets out, but left the pivot hinge rivet in place as suggested by some other forum members.

First thing I did after disassembly was replace the window stop rubber.


After cleaning up the frame, I had to slide the new rubber over the frame before installing new pop rivets.

In order to get the new rubber seal installed, I had to bend the ends of the window stop rubber up just a bit. This facilitates the new rubber seal which inserts over the edge of the window stop.

I then installed a few pop rivets from both sides to attach the window frame to the window slide rail. I hammered them flat and that made them tight.

This is where the new window seal slides over the window stop rubber.

Before pushing the new rubber into the frame I riveted the window hinge back to the frame.

Holding the Frame while pounding the rivets was a bit tricky, but not too tough a job.

Well, while waiting for my paint to be done. I had my glove box bead blasted along with some other miscellaneous parts that will need matching new paint. Consequently, I had to remove my old build SPID sticker on the inner glovebox.

I use photoshop for work so decided to take a high resolution picture of the sticker and clean it up in photoshop as well as make the printed portion bolder. There was a lot of fade and discoloration after all these years.

I then took the finished file to fedex office and had them print it on a thin card stock with clear self laminating sticker. The result was a very clean color copy of the original in the exact same size ready to stick on the new paint and was $4.50. No it's not a perfect reproduction of the original sticker, and won't win you any awards if that's your thing, but it's not expensive and looks exactly like the original would have in 1972. I was slightly worried about fading, but it doesn't see much light inside the glovebox and today's inks are a hell of a lot better then they were in 1972.


If a perfect reproduction is what you need there are forum members that do that.

A few more odd and ends of progress. Had a few hours yesterday and cleaned up many parts. Filler cap was raw metal as were several parts.

Door regulators

I rebuilt my e-brake cable brackets so they pull slightly inward toward the center of the truck. This ensures the cable stays in the caliper E-brake bracket.


test fitted the tailgate with new hardware. Looks good. Hopefully the bed will go out next week for bodywork.

All those little things add up. I've done a lot of the same type of stuff getting things ready to be installed. Window regulators painted & new rollers, window tracks all blasted & painted. I'll soon be rebuilding my vent windows. I was thinking about getting a rivet squeezer off ebay for the vent windows & the rivets for the grille, then resell it when I'm done.

WE HAVE COLOR!!!!!!! Wahooooo!, Yipeeeee! The clouds parted, the sun is a shinin and we have color!!! The cab has yet to be color sanded and buffed, but fenders, doors, cowl and hood are ready for pickup.



And the color is... Root beer. This is a root beer pearl color from Honda a element. A nice dark brown, that explodes in the sunlight. I sprung a little extra for a high end clear and a lot of it to make buffing in the future a possibility.

I will take more pics when the sun is actually out, but looks good. I should be swapping the cab for the bed next week. So, the cab is the first thing back on. I also got my push button start this week which will replace the original keyed start. Nice thing about this is I can add security to it later and other modules if I decide to add power locks or windows.

MORE PAINT!!!
Hi all, well the sun was out the morning so here are a few pics that show the color off a bit more.





Also, today pulled the trans/tranfer again. Thought I was done with that nonsense, but…. After weeks of banging my head against the wall about a solution for the clutch fork not having a boot, I broke down and decided to just change the damn bell housing. So I pulled the trans and will be using a newer gm truck type housing #460468. This should give me a wider clutch fork hole and it will accommodate a 12 inch clutch. Too bad I swapped the 12" for a 11" months ago. Oh well, live and learn. i wanted to get this done so I can put the cab on the frame as soon as possible and didn't want to be messing around with this from underneath.

So, onward!

So, a little progress on the bell housing. I picked up a 486 bell housing on ebay and got her prepped to go back on.


This bellhousing is going to do the trick I think. It fits the SM465 and has a much wider hole for the clutch fork. It also measures the exact same height as the cast iron bell housing. I did need to drill out the lower attach holes so the housing could be bolted on the bottom from inside the housing, but other than that, will be a good fit.


Hopefully this will end the adapter phase of the build for the trans/motor. Tuesday I should be reinstalling the trans and with some more luck the cab next week. Whoaaa that would be nice!

Andddd, we're re-installed. This has to be the easiest, knock on wood, trans install yet. literally slid right into place.

Now plenty of space for the clutch fork boot. Mission accomplished.

I checked on the cab, but still not color sanded. Hopefully I'll hear something this week.
