I am running a AEM wideband. My afr's are: cruise 14-16 and WOT 10-11. When I pull the plugs, it does not get good fuel distribution, I think mainly because of the intake setup. Two short runners and two long outside sweeps. Inner plugs burn correct, outside plugs burn rich.

I have thought about running a turbo blanket, from some of the youtube vids, it really looks like it contains the heat! Good idea.

Does the same concept work with wrapping the up/down-pipes?
Sounds like your afr's are alright.... I would agree with the intake being a cause of unequal fuel distribution. This is why I went with the clifford. The total volume of the runners is much larger to minimize the effect of the unequal length.

The concept with wrapping the up/down pipes is the same as the blanket. Wrapping the up pipe maintains the volume of the hot exhaust and prevents cooling and decreasing volume before going through the turbo. Also by doing this it prevents excess heat from entering the engine bay. By wrapping the down pipe, you help to maintain exhaust velocity as it exits the the turbo and goes out the tail pipe. Again by wrapping and maintaining exhaust velocity you are minimizing the effects of heat soak in the engine bay by pushing it out the tail pipe.

Ahhh! That sounds perfect for my situation. I need to minimize the heat from the turbo. Where the turbo sits in my configuration, just by location, it heats the intake and carb too much.

Which turbo blanket and wrap did you go with? The titanium (lava) looks great, but is it worth the $$$$? I want the best product to hold heat in.

LB, thanks for your help.

Re: Inline 250 - T3 Turbo - w/ Video

I went with DEI's titanium turbo shield, and DEI's titanium wrap. I was very impressed with the turbo shield when after multiple passes down the track I could put my hand directly on the heat shield and did not get burnt and this was on a diesel truck pushing flames out the stacks. So I would say yes it is worth the money. I got mine for $110 from a guy who was clearing out his stock... you should be able to pick one up new for around $160 from a dealer. I bought my wrap from a dealer on ebay who is a couple hours from me here is iowa he had the best price on the titanium wrap that i found. I have been impressed with DEI's products and their customer service as far as standing behind their products, Customer service and product quality are their top priorities.

Thanks, good info to know. Those VID about turbo blankets are almost hard to believe.

I found a company PTP turbo shield, that is spoken very highly also.

The PTP lava blankets look to be nearly the same as the DEI ones... at a much cheaper price. I would be tempted to give it a try.

Re: Inline 250 - T3 Turbo - w/ Video

I got to shake out JED today with the new goods. A new Offy intake, machined flat intake/exhaust manifolds, new carb base plate, gaskets, turbo blanket, and up/down pipe wrapped.

Much more power, response, smooth transitions. I ran it for around 20min, popped the hood, and could literally put my hand directly on the turbo blanket. I was very impressed.

If I get an intercooler, your big ass will be down at my house helping me pull what's left of my shredded tranny!

2/8/13

A quick update on exhaust and a sweet swap find!

Tuck and Dump: total appreciation to all who have this "look". The routing is much harder than it looks. The results are a bit quieter exhaust not and no drone. Pleased

The $5 swap meet find. I was as happier than a puppy with two peckers!

Nice picture!

One question, how do you control ignition? Do you retard timing under boost? Sorry if this information is in the thread somewhere. I looked through all the pages and didn't see anything. Your pictures are gone from the inliners forum also so I couldn't see what you did there, either.

Thanks,

Chad

Edit: Okay, I just read through a little more slowly. Your running HEI with mechanical advance... did you ever hook up the vacuum advance? If so, did you lock out the advance at a certain point? Thanks again,

Chad

Yes, I am running a HEI with the vacuum adv. plugged. First, I made a lockout plate for the HEI and it ran like sh**. Then, I put a HEI weight advance kit on it with the lightest springs. I have a dial back timing light and figured out that it was "all in" early (around 2000 rpm's) at 25 degrees. My initial is set at 10 deg and the mechanical advance gives it another 15 deg. (25 total)

With my setup, I have it running on the rich side and have never had any detonation yet. I have the wastegate set at 10 psi. If I were to run more boost, I would most likely get a BTM box to remove timing, but where I am running it, there is no need. For my setup, it is right at its sweet spot.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for taking the time to spell it out. Chevy's are my first love, but I'm thinking about turbocharging an old International Harvester 266. Its a beast in the low end but needs help up top. The old binders don't move much air, I would only need a Holley 2300 350 cfm to feed it. I need to figure out what to do for timing though. Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Re: Inline 250 - T3 Turbo - w/ Video

"BLOW ME OFF!!"

well sort of, that was the engine talking.

After much contemplation on whether to pony up and purchase a genuine Tial, Turbosmart, Greddy, Forge blow off valve, I decided to take the value route and hope for the best. I decided on a pull-type blow off valve from ebay. Sold by ebay seller "Wyntonm". It is a 44mm BOV that comes with a band clamp and nice polished stainless tube. It was delivered to my door (Nashville,TN from Washington) in about 3 days and set me back $65.

All of the pieces seemed very well constructed of billet aluminum. The first thing I did was take it apart to inspect the diaphragm and valve movement. The diaphragm was a piece of silicone rubber that allowed the valve to "blow-off" about 3/4" of movement. The complete construction of the piece was very solid, the first thing that I noticed was its density. It felt like I was picking up a cannon ball.

I took a few vacuum measurements of my truck at idle, part-throttle and throttle rebound. They were 15 in hg, 8 in hg, and 20-25 in hg. I first hooked the BOV up with no adjustments. At idle it had a slight clatter of the valve. This was caused by the BOV opening at exactly 14-16 in hg. So I needed to increase the spring pressure on the valve. I put one washer under the spring and it increased it just enough to keep the valve closed at idle.

After a few WOT runs, the BOV seems to be working flawlessly. The sound emitted is barely noticeable and sound like a large blast of air. Very powerful, instant and no shudder.

The only issue that I see, is that the BOV is not easily adjustable. If someone needed a wide range of adjustment, you might want to look for another one.

Looks good! Thanks for the detailed review. Did you buy the tee to install the BOV on Ebay as well?

No, it was a package deal. BOV, stainless T-pipe, and V-band clamp. Good deal, if you ask me.
