Got busy in the shop again, not much has happened (meaning nothing). My wife was at the shop tonight doing bills (dreaded 10th due date for most), she sent me a few IM's.
Liz: I am about to have heart failure over the OReilly's bill Randy: whys that Liz: $2300 Randy: well i did a 3m deal they had, had to buy like 6 cases of PPS cups but got a free primer gun bought some stuff for that 99 truck, that probably added up decently Liz: holy cow See if she figures it all out or not. The $300 intake and $400 throttle body plus a few other odds and ends account for at least $1200 of it I bet.

Was able to see a little work done to her on Friday. They got the other header on, trans dipstick mounted, plugs and wires on, filled with oil, new TBI wired up and the core support bolted back up with some new hardware.
Now he's fighting being able to hook up the PCV valve and the breather hose from the valve cover to the TBI spacer. I really think he's going to have to swap the valve covers though, which I had mentioned when we first uncrated the motor. Basically the holes are on the wrong side, as is the oil filler. Getting closer though. Going to pick up my new car hauler this morning. I'm excited.

Ok, I'm sort of scared. Hiding out here in my office while they tinker with my truck some more. They are saying it will start today though! I'm scared because he grabbed a fire extinguisher as he headed out the door telling me "it will fire over today!".
I can hear what sounds like a lawn mower though. I know it's my truck, but sounds just like my lawn mower when I fire it over at the first of the season.

I told them I'd hold the extinguisher if they wanted. Heard it run for about 10 seconds, now it won't catch. He just pulled the valve cover back off to check TDC, looks fine he said.
And as far as helping, once we got the sheet metal tore off the front end, it was all over my head. I won't even pretend to be a mechanic or know a damn thing about engines. I know it's getting fuel, I know it's getting fire, I know it's cranking.... just won't catch and go VROOOOM yet.

Got it running fairly decent last night, even without a timing light. Found some vacuum lines that are rotted and a couple of broken vacuum connections. Gonna round up those parts and get them put on tonight hopefully, as well as get it timed properly with a light.
I stayed late and helped my tech get the front sheet metal back on. We lack the wheel house on the drivers fender and hanging the hood. With the heat yesterday we just ran outta steam at about 7pm. With any luck, I'll get it over to the exhaust shop tomorrow and quiet it down some, and start the break in miles on her this weekend.

Got it running good, had the timing very close by ear (is what I was told, I wasn't there last night). Got fenders and liners back on, hood and latch etc all bolted back up, new lights installed and wired. Took it over for some new exhaust, tech said it ran good when he left and started running bad by the time he got there (about 2 miles at most). Got the exhaust all done, told them to get an o2 sensor working on the passenger side (drivers side was there already). They put the bung in place, but did not put a sensor in.... They actually removed the o2 sensor on the drivers side, put plugs in both of the bung holes... weird. Anyways, truck is running like crap, seems to be getting too much fuel. I almost think we've fouled out a couple of plugs already.
Putting in new o2 sensors and a new MAP sensor tomorrow, hopefully between the two that is what's causing the computer to throw too much fuel at it. Will also pull the plugs and check them and replace if needed. Really hoping they get it running like a top by Friday so I can take her out and get it broke in. Getting ever so close. Will toss up some photos tomorrow morning.

Randy,
Your running the stock THrottle Body, or did you get an aftermarket? I can't remember. I think the aftermarket may have bigger injectors, makes me wonder if you need a custom chip. Hopefully it is just the lack of oxygen sensor. It kinda sounds like it was running good in open loop but started running crappy when it went to closed loop after it warmed up??? Did it light the check engine light? Are you going to run 2 oxygen sensors? Or did you relocate it to the Y-pipe?

We wired up the Holley TBI. The paperwork said it would sync up on its own. Dunno, getting way over my head here. I'm hoping to get it running good enough, but have an open mind of sending it out for a tune. The guy I bought the truck from had a 'chip', it was in the glove box. Lord only knows where I put it though... he said with it chipped he thought it ran worse, so he never used it.
It's going to have two o2 sensors, is the way it was before actually, "true dual" setup. We had another guy come look/listen to it tonight, he really thinks just the lack of o2 sensors and possibly a bad MAP sensor... so i dunno. Got the o2, MAP and a new EGR (about the last thing, might as well....) on order, should have them all in the morning when Advance opens up. And yes, the check engine light has been on since about the moment we fired it up. Hoping that's just lack of o2 sensors. We let it warm up inside the shop while timing and such, so I dunno about the why really. We're getting closer though.... so much closer.... And, I'm back in the primer club. We put the primed hood on it today.

So it had 2 oxygen sensors already? I thought all the OBD-I had a single oxygen sensor. Have you guys checked codes?

Being the dummy that I am, I did grab my code reader. Then I wondered why it did not fit the plug.
My techs buddy said if we got the sensors all in and it still ran bad and had a check engine light, we could take it over to his shop (tire/alignment/mechanic shop here in town) and he'd get his guys to get her going. Just hate to give up just yet.

You can get codes easily with the OBD-I
Just jump 2 terminals on the data link connector with the key on and the check engine light will flash the codes Check out this link http://www.roberthancock.com/efi/

If it is just dumping fuel, look at the coolant temp sensor in the intake. If you can find an obd1 scanner (not reader) you can see what is going on in real time. If the CTS thinks the vehicle is cold, it willl act as a choke and dump fuel.

Temp sensor on the side is for the gauge, temp sensor in the intake is for the computer.

Ok, maybe I'll figure that sensor out and get one. New motor, all new sensors, I really don't have an issue with that. Anything to make it run tip top for as long as possible!

it should be towards the front passengers side. There are 2 wires, IIRC. If it is not hooked up, the injectors will be darn near wide open.
The sender on the head is for the gauge, the sensor in the intake is for the ECM.
