Thanks 69GMC... I'm still at it...

Between the work that pays $$$ & the "work" that spends the $$$ I just haven't had time to update the thread in a long time...

I will get it up to date soon with a few pics to boot...
Keep the encouragement coming...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

Well, here is a quick update to make this thing kinda' current...

After I put the dog house on the first time, I wasn't happy with what I saw...
So... The house got re-done...

Captain Krylon likes that mo' betta'...

I installed the CPP shift linkage kit...

I wired up an aux. fuse box to keep things nice and neat under the dash...

I plumbed & installed the fuel pressure regulator, just need to measure for fuel lines...

So there you have it, you all are "kinda' up to date now...

I still have to install PS hoses, radiator, hoses, trans cooler lines, fan shroud, blah, blah, blah...

It's the small stuff that just eats up the time... Till next time...

Amazing what you can do with a rattle can. BTW, the trim around the grill openings and headlights will really clean up well with some fine steel wool.

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

Well, I finally got the motor department all buttoned up...

I found the PS pressure hose I needed after a 2 month search...
Went in the back of O' Reilly and found the one I needed in about 15 minutes...
It fits a Dodge Dakota... Who'd a thunk it...

"Why didn't you have one made?", You may be asking...

I had a real problem with what most everyone wanted for a custom made one...

"WHAT?!?! 60 BUCKS for making a 90 degree bend on ONE side?!?" Really?!?

Plus... I'm cheap... Got the Dakota one for under 20 bucks...

AND since it is in a Chevy... It IS custom...

I was amazed at how much of the stuff from that 87 van, bolted right up to a 68 truck... The battery cables, radiator, fan shroud, radiator mounts, trans cooler lines, the list goes on & on...

This truly is Frankien Truck...

I picked up some spark plug boot heat shields @ the Conroe swap meet...

I also wanted a safety toggle switch for the electric fuel pump AND a way to drain the fuel bowls should I need to...
I wasn't to keen on the idea of a toggle switch under the dash...
I'm trying to make the truck look stock for the most part, so...

I used the old choke cable location to put a switch in the dash instead of a toggle... Looks stock and serves it purpose to boot...

Push that switch and you really will "choke" that motor...

I still have to run my fuel lines, wire the 700R4 lock up switch, add all new fluids then get the timing light out...

Then, post a video of the start up...

Well... I hope it starts...

Flu-by-U, congrats on getting the truck running, thing are lookin really good! What Trans wiring system are you going to use? Did I see you still have the shaft throttle linkage, how does that work with the TV cable? How do you like the linkage kit, was it easy to set up?

Thanks...

I kinda' got ahead of myself on the baby steps before the start-up in my posts...

I'll fill you in with this stuff in a later post...

Let's just say I was anxious to share the noise with you all...

Too, bad we don't have "smell-o-vision."

The smell of all that fresh paint baking is almost as sweet as the smell of racing fuel...

I will post the article that I used to do the lock up wiring for the 700R4...
It is the best one I have seen with step by step's, pictures, & part #'s too...

The throttle linkage is one that I made out of a straight rod that I got from Home Depot.
I measured it, bent it, & drilled it... Easy & CHEAP!!!

By linkage kit are you meaning the shift linkage?
If so, I got it from CPP on there E-Bay store...
I think it is under the Nova parts section of the web site...
I can't recommend this shift linkage enough, easy set up & great quality...
Look @ CPP's & Lokar's side by side & there is no difference...
Other than one is about $75 & the other is $35... Which one would you prefer?!?

The TV cable is hooked up to the TV bracket that I snagged outa' the donor van...

It's amazing how much stuff I was able to use from the 87 van on a 68 truck without any modifications...
The stuff just bolted right up like it was meant to be there

(i.e.- radiator, radiator mounts & supports, battery cables, trans. cooler lines, fan shroud, blah, blah, blah.)

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I kinda' skipped some steps of the progress in the thread & jumped straight to the start up video... I couldn't help myself...

I was having a few issues on how to get this thing wired up electrically...

I am an electrical dunce, but thanks to this site and the members that post here and helped me out with my utter lack of knowledge...
I must give a HUGE, "Thanks to you All!"
Your postings and suggestions all across this forum gave me the info I needed to get the job done right...

My biggest concern & most of my research time went into how to wire up my 700R4 lock up switch...
Do I buy one already to go from a big name maker for $150-$180 bucks? OUCH!!!
Or do I use the diagrams that I have found thru searches on this site & wire it myself?

Well, since I am on a real tight budget, (& I'm cheap) I chose the latter...

I found this tech article that to me was the most helpful one I have seen...
It is a step by step with pictures to guide you thru the process...
I especially like the pictures, kinda' how I like my books & Snap-Tite model kits... Easy...

It lists all the part #'s needed for the job & I picked them up @ the local Chevrolet dealers parts counter for $20 bucks...

Here is the link to the article...

http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/ho...562/index.html

After I wired up the trans I figured I needed to put a drain plug in the pan so routine maintenance would be easier the next time around...

Well, it sounded easy enough... I'm sure it would work great, IF...

You drill the hole in the proper place... I didn't...

What is wrong with this picture?

As you can see, I was really close to putting the plug in it's proper place...

It seems the things you learn while building your hot rod are never ending...

Oh, well, the new aluminum one looks a little nicer any way...

Until next time, Captain Krylon, signing off...

Just found this build and love it! Couple questions for you. I probably missed this as I skimmed through, but is that orginal paint, and are you going to leave the paint as is? It looks to be in great shape.

Thanks for the compliments...

The paint is NOT original, but the color is close to the original color...
Old Farmer Brown, who I traded for the truck, kinda' painted it with a brush in some places so I am slowly correcting his mistakes...

The end result will be a driver NOT a show truck...

I am going for the parts runner/shop truck look in the end...

The colors are going to be Hot Rod Flatz Burnt Orange for the body with the grill, top cap and redneck mirrors painted in a gloss white... (possible metal flake white?)

This guy just about nailed the look I am going for when I'm finished...

This sold on E-bay last week... I love the look, stance, white walls & all...

Thanks again... Go back & read it all when you have time...

I try to keep it entertaining with a LOT of high quality pictures...

Sweet! That looks awesome! I really dig the patina look to a point, I was really wondering how you were going to match the bed to the cab. Thanks for clearing it up, and good luck with the build!
