Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks all for the truck compliments. Am very happy with how it is turning out. Got some more work done today.

Installed some stainless steel rivnuts on the front grill today. Had read about them on a post the other day and then found them on e bay. 25 pcs for $9.99. Also installed 1 piece of upper trim on the driver's door. Was worried that the mirror tripod was going to hit the trim piece but it cleared it by about a 1/16".

Primed the back of the front bumper and also underneath the windshield cowl panel with POR15 primer. Tomorrow I will top coat the backs with black POR15.

Decide to install a hitch receiver behind the front license plate. My brother and I have a 10,000 lb winch mounted on a portable fixture that slide into a trailer hitch receiver. Thought it would be cool to be able to fold the license plate down and have a "hidden" receiver. Some pics below of me cutting a small square out of the bumper behind the license plate area.

Plan for tomorrow afternoon is for Bill P and I to install the rest of the upper and lower trim pieces.

Pics from today:

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

LakeAnna, Only 1 piece was new from LMC. Found a mix of GM trim on Craigslist. Some were even still in the plastic with GM stickers on them! Some were original trim that had been removed. There were a lot that had the wood grain decal on them. Basically picked the straightest pieces with the least amount of dings. I removed all of the wood grain decals and old black paint and had Bill Price tape them up and spray the black. They really turned out nice.

Planning on installing the lower trim this weekend. Having Jerry's Auto in Rising Sun, MD install stainless steel dual exhausts on Tuesday

Here are pictures Bill took in his paint shop of the trim.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Very carefully. Bill used some really narrow tape along the sides of the thin black lines.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Have decided to go with Flowmaster 50 series mufflers with 2 1/2" stainless exhaust. I am very happy with the sound of the dual 40 series Flowmasters on my 69 Camaro but want to quiet my truck down just a little bit more. It should still have a nice rumble with the dual 50's.

Love the way the moldings came out. Sure beats 800 something dollars for a new set!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

A couple pictures below of drilling holes to mount the trim. After step drilling up to the correct size, think it was 11/32", the edges of the holes were touched up with either white single stage enamel or black POR 15

Finished wiring all of the rear tail lights this past weekend using the American Auto Wire rear harness/connectors. That kit has worked out very well. I added extra ground wires to all of the metal light housings. Have heard that bad grounds have caused lighting problems in these old trucks. The wires under the truck were covered in black plastic wire loom. Was glad to see all of the lights work when I tested them.

Stainless exhaust appointment was pushed back to this Thursday. Can't wait to hear those duals!

Thumbs up Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Might be better if the truck went to Maryland. He has quite the setup. Separate paint room with it's own HVAC. Just about any tool you can think of. It did not have a built in lift but is working on getting that in soon.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Nice job on your trim install! I have a bottle of touch-up mixed for all the drilling I have to do. So you used the American harness on your truck. Complete rewire then?

Looks great.

Awesome truck! I don't think I missed it, but what tire size are you running, and what kind of lift? The stance on that is perfect.

Kinda off the current subject, but have you finished your fuel fill? I'm currently working on mine (side marker) - what a p.i.t.a.! Truck looks great - you've done a first class job all the way.

great work and your trim turned out amazing! I was thinking of using edging masking tape to mask mine with. That'll be down the road it looks like.
