I know you were following the original numbering, but I would have painted the 210 sloping down instead of up on the passenger side.
But nonetheless still great
Honestly I had not even taken that into consideration- I think you may be right, that it would have looked better sloping downward, but like you said, I was copying what was there originally...

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

1 Step forward, 2 steps back... Wait... That doesn't sound right??

Oh well, had to do it to get to the transmission....

While waiting for some parts for the trans, I did a side project I've been waiting to do...

It was tricky getting all the flanges lined up straight and level, and then getting the pipes the right height (it looks sort of off in the picture, but I think it's just from the air cleaners not all the way on). Only have the welding done so far, still have to figure out the linkage and fuel set-up... I got a pair of Holley 94's from a friend that already had the throttle shaft removed so that'll work out nicely.

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

More progress! Car is now officially registered, inspected and insured... So now I can drive it wherever! 126 miles so far on it! Still waiting for my real plate to show up though....

Finished up my fuel system last night- Soldering skills came in handy again.. I soldered the brass fitting closed on the other two carbs, and then made this out of 1/2" coppers and some 3/8" brass fittings for "Pex" tubing.

Hood's going to need some work...

Well, to be honest, it's only running on one

I made a homemade manifold like they used to back in the day, but never drilled holes into the manifold itself- just welded the pipe and flanges on top. Soldered the brass fuel inlets shut to ensure no gas would enter..

Since the car originally had a 3x2 set-up that what I wanted to stick with... Just didn't want the hassle of rebuilding two more carbs, tuning, etc. etc.

Supposedly with a progressive linkage set up a 3x2 really isn't too bad on a flatty..

I see now... I was thinking the same thing, I can see the weld lines. Even if it doesn't work, it still looks really cool!

Thanks! In theory it would work if I had torched or cut holes in the manifold- several old racers and hot rodders have told me that kits used to be available back in the day that had just the flanges and you made up the pipes.. I've never seen any of these aftermarket kits, but one guy told to find some old cast iron intake and simply cut the flange off instead- so that how I did it!

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Thought I'd show off one of the last pieces to go on the car...

However, when I took the picture, I noticed a pretty decent amount of oil under the car.. I hoped it was left over from spilling a little, or a stain from another vehicle, but no such luck..

Looks like the oil seal for the pinion decided to wear out somewheres during my 40-50 mile cruise last night (it's first car show).. I don't think the gears or anything suffered too badly, it certainly didn't lose all the gear oil- but boy did it make a mess slinging it around! Covered the rearend, suspension, shocks, even managed to soak the bottom of the gas tank and got some on the body... At least I won't have to worry about those areas rusting 0

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Dang! Guess I've been neglecting this thread a little...

So it turned out that the flathead wasn't running like I wanted... It started up and ran great, but she just wouldn't quit her smoking habit- and it seemed to be getting worse. Fairly certain it was the valve guide seals (going down a hill, while not on the gas, I'd leave a pretty big smoke screen behind), it was also boiling the water out of the radiator (just didn't like those ih RPM's...), and didn't have the best oil pressure either. So instead of an all new valve system, and then getting into the cam bearings, etc, etc. I decided to make use of the 283 I have...

Not quite as pretty as the flatty with trips, but I seem to forget all about that when driving it! That 283 sure scoots the car along great- now I understand why guys were yanking their flatheads for SBC's as soon as they came out!

Open headers really wasn't an option on the road (although I did have to do one short test drive for the heck of it!), so I bought these short 3" sections from Summit. I took a section of 1 and 3/4" exhaust tubing, marked out holes all around it, then took an air chisel with a pointed bit to it. Then I drilled out the little "divets" made by the air chisel and welded them into the 3" sections.... These homemade baffles actually work pretty well! I think it's even quieter then my flathead was- and that had stock manifolds, mufflers, and exited alot further back!

Also had to make my own bracket to run my mini alternator... Works pretty good.

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Realized that I hadn't updated this thread in quite a long time....

Managed to put about 800 miles on the car over the summer, and in the fall I drove to the race track that it ran at back in the day for a reunion. The original driver couldn't make it to the event, so instead I drove it to his house and took this picture:

Yes, got a 283- Flathead didn't really like the RPM's from the 4.86 gears, and had cooling troubles.. And went back to it's smoking habit. Right thing would have been to rebuild it right, but I had this 283 sitting in the shop that cost me $175 (bought a pair of them for $350) and had most of the parts to put it in- got me on the road for the rest of the season, and had a whole lot more power! 283 runs mint- I pulled the valve covers and swapped intakes and it looked extremely clean inside.

Didn't ever finish the hood... Made own out of SS, but was never really happy with it... Decided to move on to other project (I'm rebuilding another old stock car now), but may come back to it later. There's a few things I'd like to change on the car, needs some names painted on the roof, and maybe some different tires/wheels so I'll probably take some time next summer to work on those things.

Woops- they aren't working? I can see them from my computer, but maybe other people can't see them?

Here's some attached photos anyways (I think I exceeded my limit with free Photobucket)

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Maybe if you run three deuces on that SBC to age it to fit with the car more... Single round filter ruined it for me, but maybe if you figure out the hood situation it won't matter so much. I can understand the power gains though and damn fine build!!!

I think you might be right about the single filter ruining things.. Something looks off to me, and I think that's part of it. I was trying to keep the 2 barrel because I beleive the track that it ran at had a limit for a 2 barrel on OHV engines. At the time it ran with a flathead, the rules were pretty much open and they could run 3x carbs. But still, it doesn't really matter too much, and it would look better that way.
