Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

That was the original plan. But after listening to Chevybrad and Coralhead, and finding out that these frames are rare enough, I decided to do the whole toolbox thing. Besides, once I drop the 327 in, I intend to travel long distances in. Things like power tour.

And while on vacation, I was wondering what I would do with my luggage. Something kinda like the trunk on Ogre's truk. So I figured the toolbox would work for that too.

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Now that I got the engine running, it's time for some...adjustments.
I'm tired of the jerry rigged throttle linkage, so I use the original Rochester model B carb.

Here's the story: I already had the original carburetor. (see post #7) So I decided to rebuild it. Problem was, the bolts holding the throttle plate to the shaft broke off.
I was getting ready to drill them out and hope to not screw everything up when I found out it didn't fit the intake manifold! I found out the carter carb did, so I just let it be.

But the man I got the fenders from had a 216 lying on it's side in his yard. I mentioned that my carb didn't fit the manifold, and he said, "it doesn't? Let me get a wrench. If you take it off, it's yours." So I got the manifold and the carb! I just finished cleaning up the throttle assembly on it, and mating it to the one I already rebuilt.
What do you guys think of the difference?

Next on the list:
-Replace gaskets
-Do a valve job
-find a way to mount the new alternator/generator.

How nice that man is! That is looking much better! You'll run into a lot of rusted frozen aggravation challenges. Keep up with the good work and keep looking for finds like this carb/ intake!

Thanks!
Funny, I've already run into some of those....
I finished building both intakes, My problem right now, is the power plunger seal has shrunk. So I need to find one of those before I can run with the new carb.

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Real quick, I found a picture that comes damn close to what I plan on doing:
So same idea. Except I'll just have the top open. No drawers by your feet/knees (depending on how you stand in your bed)

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

I put new U joints in the drive shaft, and the drive shaft in the truck.
I didn't have a U bolts that hold the joint to the yoke for the diff. side.
I went around to all the parts stores looking for these clamps, and no one seemed to have the right size if any at all.
I went to milwaukee last Saturday and bought a trans and got the clamps off that (hey! it was cheap enough )

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Well, BB&S took his first steps today!!
From the chocks to where it is in the picture.

But I have a small problem....
As you can see, he peed a little...
Which I have no problem with, considering I don't have the oil filter or oil pressure gauge on right now. What does is the color of the oil.
I know when antifreeze mixes with the oil, it becomes that mocha color, and gets to be quite frothy.
But this doesn't happen to be frothy..
What do you guys think happened?

Here are the car facts:
The motor oil is fresh, and was black until now.
There was fluid in the block, it was filled up to the water pump. (it poured out when I rebuilt the pump)
It seems like this started when I topped the radiator off, and tried starting it.
(It's running pretty rough with the new carb on it.)

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

I would say cracked head or head gasket.

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Looks like you need to pull the head and have it checked out. Lots of times there is a reason like this the truck had been put out in the field. Hopefully it is just a head gasket.

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

I've seen cracks in the water jacket behind the lifter cover on these engines if allowed to freeze.

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Thanks for the tips guys.
Today, I found out what an ordeal it is to pull the head off these motors...
I can't believe you have to pull the rockers off for one bolt...argh!
Anyways, here are some pictures
Maybe I'm in luck!
It doesn't seem like there even is a gasket....

Aww shucks.
I started using a scraper on the bottom of the head, turns out there was a gasket, but it was squeezed so much, that it stuck to the head like white on rice

I was gonna say, it looks like there is one deep in there in the first picture in post #136. Did you get a toolbox yet? If not, have you decided on one? BTW, truck is looking SWEET! Let us know!

Nick, hope it is not bad on the water leak but as before......(above)

Now that you have the head off you can get it checked for cracks and/or get new hardened valve seats installed. If it not cracked then the block may be the culprit. Either way you may be looking at that tri-power setup you have your eyes on.

Good Luck

John

yeah, when i made the first post, I only looked at the block.
No I don't have one quite yet. I plan on making mine from scratch. This is the type of box that come to mind. (at last that's what i'm envisioning)
By the way, Thanks!!

Yeah, that's whats been bouncing around in my head for a while..... I don't know whether or not the cost will be worth it.
On one hand, that V8 still needs $600 of intake.....
But on the other, I'm going to be spending at least a hundred bucks on new valve seats, and thats just the start..

Aw man, sorry about your luck and yeah unfortunately from your picture, it does look as though the gasket is blown which, like everyone else is saying it's a good possibility of a cracked head or block...

Damn...
So what's the deal with cylinder number 3?
could that be near the problem?
I don't see any reason for that combustion chamber to have no soot...

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Nick, Go get a fresh head gasket and put it back together with some fresh CHEAP oil and see if it was just a bad head gasket. The most you will be out is the cheap oil. That way you can eliminate the bad gasket part of the puzzle.

Good luck, John

Re: 1952 1 Ton Rebuild

Well I have this rusty gunk that came out all the orifices of the head, I'm starting to agree with katrina, my water jacket is crap.
I found a guy on craigslist, I'm getting a head, and oil pan, and a distributor cap for $60.

That's where the leak was. Back in "the day" we used to pour a coke bottle of water down the carb while keeping the engine at about 1500 to 2,000 rpm. You dribbled the water a little at the time to clean out the combustion chambers. I guess you could say it was steam cleaning the pistons. At least that's what we said then, LOL.
