Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Hey Schrum - Thanks for the reminder to get back on here and post some updates. I've been working through a bunch of nuances with the truck but at least it is on the road.
I had a "falling-out" with the shop I hired. Too many empty promises, and now that I am looking over their work more carefully I am coming across more areas of concern. Mostly things that show a lack of detail and care. Worst thing is that down the road I will need to pull everything off the frame to redo the powdercoat since the shop butchered the nice finish...But for now I have been trying to enjoy driving it. That almost came to an abrupt end on Monday though. I drove the truck to work without issue but on the way home it was a different story. Made it about a third into my drive and heard a noise similar to that of a rock hitting the inside of the wheel well and underside of the cab...a bit louder though. Right after that the brakes on the front passenger side seemed rough while applying the brake pedal. I chose to get off the road and into a parking lot. Got out and checked it over but didn't see anything out of place. Figured it must be behind the wheel where I couldn't see. Instead of risking a worse outcome I decided to have it towed home. Sat around for nearly two hours waiting for the flat bed, missed my kid's karate lesson, but ended up making it home safe. Last night I took the passenger front wheel off and was hoping to find the issue. Well, I found it... The brakes were literally falling off the front! Sitting around in the parking lot for two hours seems so much better when thinking about what could have happened. It appears during the build the shop neglected to add any sort of loctite to the bolts and one just rattled lose. I am planning to check them all and add some loctite to ensure this doesn't happen again. I have a reliable shop scheduled to do a once over and check that everything else is as it should be.

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Wow! Glad it didn't do major damage! I heard the term before "Nut and Bolt it", meaning to go over every one of them after its complete!

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Not good....
You're lucky nothing worse happened!! Some shops want to earn fast money, maybe this was one of them? I really like your truck! Make sure to make a lot of safe miles!!

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Thanks guys - I'm very thankful nothing worse happened as well.
I ordered a bolt from CPP to replace the missing one...it's just a 5/8" fine thread but they machine the head to have a lower profile. I want them to match and figured this was the best way to do that. Hope to get it back on the ground this upcoming weekend. I will be going over the rest of the build this winter and double checking EVERYTHING before I dare drive it again.

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Hey Shane,
How is the truck doing, been over a year. I wish the pictures were still viewable on the forum. I'm still plodding along, slowly.

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Haven't been on here in sometime. Life got in the way.
Truck is good. Didn't do much besides get her back on the road since the caliper bracket mishap. Drove her every chance I got this last summer. Did very well. Minnesota winters are no place for a slammed truck so she is sitting pretty in my heated garage until the weather cooperates and gets nice again. I might be able to scrounge up a photo or two from this last year. The other photos are on my photobucket account. I plan to move them off of there in the near future, but until then there seems to be a way to get them to work using the Chrome Browser and the "photobucket embed fix" plugin.

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
Unfortunately I have not done much in advancing the build...just been driving it when the weather permits.
How is your build coming along?

Re: 1958 GMC Memorial Build
well, slowly. Going to have tires on in the next couple weeks but still lots to do on the frame plus I don't even have a motor yet. Trying to build a large shop on an acre of land my daughter owns..that will be so nice. In another year I expect to have quite a bit done. I'll start a build thread once I get it into the shop.
