Are they readily available in the US? If Im right this style was only made between 60 and 62 so there can be many available nearly 60 years on.

While I remember, have any of you chaps this side of the world any use for a fibre glass induction hood for a early 60's truck? Personally I think its beyond repair as the strengthening section at the hinge edge has de-laminated and was held together with a length of wood and a shelving bracket. But before I cut it up and scrap it I though Id ask, just in case.

OK, so to recap, this is what a PO had left me with



Got to be honest I wasn’t looking forward to this as it took me long enough to figure out how I was going to do it.

Anyway I measured up the dash and the repair panel turned out to be about 20mm – 25mm to wide, so I marked it up and trimmed it



Then it was out with the old



BTW this was some earth connection!



Its about 3" long. Think it was doubling up for a local substations main earth!

Anyway with the old bit cut out it was a case of offering up the new section and just altering the gap bit by bit while keeping the overall width at the bottom.



Unfortunately the patch panel is not an exact fit (there a surprise) ant is slightly shallower on the bottom but that’s not really and issue as nobody will see it.





The top needed some trimming. Again about 25mm.





Final cutting done (left the wee “lugs” at the bottom just to locate the patch panel though I joggled them slightly





Clamped in place



Then tacked up





There was a bit of a gap on one side at the bottom



But that was filled with a bit of offcut



Although I did tack weld most of the outside I fully welded it up internally



Still needs a lot of filler, sorry bondo, but in my opinion at least its already 100x better than it was.



Oh and I found this in the glove box



Does that mean this truck was on the road possibly as late as December 2013 or do you have to have this even if the vehicle is off the road?

Oh and has anyone got a picture of the inside of their glove box (for a 62) so I can see what it should look like. Im not sure if there has been some butchery in there as well. The actual plastic insert had been cut up but Im not sure if the steel has been cut as well.

It may have only taken one night to weld in the dash patch panel but every night since has been a case of fill sand fill sand fill sand fill sand........ You get the picture.

But Im reasonably happy now with the way it is, though the final paint will reveal any flaw



Now Ive just the damaged switch panel to fix and all the other little dents



In between all that fill sand etc. I mad a start on one rear fender. Sill a ways from finishing it but the repairs are gon and in now filling sanding, filling sanding, filling sanding..... could be at this for a while and im now mighty glad I bot new front fenders and a whole new bed!

Nice work on the dash Bill, it's turned out very well, looks great. You can get away with less than perfect repairs in some places, but the dash isn't one of them, you have to look at it every time you get in the truck

I agree some of the patch panels take a bit of "fiddling" to make them fit, but generally work out ok.

Your absolutely right Ian, the dash and in particular is not an area you can slack on. Unfortunately the openings for the ash tray and heater switches are not very accurate. I may need to do a bit of filling round them.

Just off on a road trip to pick up an old motorbike 150 miles from here with a friend and then home via another detour.
Been spending a lot of time on other people's jobs lately, but hats all good.

You are progressing well.

My radio hole has to be cut and removed too, in my case someone used an angry Badger to cut the holes for radio, cab mounted speakers and in the doors.

Some real idiots out there.

Ive got the same Rian, huge holes in the doors for speakers.

Ive virtualy no way to repair them because of the swage lines so I may have to cut out and replace quite a large area of the door with flat steel.

If you can not find some old wrecked doors to cut the pieces out of (probably not an option) Maybe find a person or shop that has a bead roller and roll a bead to match the door bead.. Don't know if it would roll a bead that wide though.

I actually managed to "buy" and ship the inner panel off one of Ta2Dons throw away doors.

I will be cutting and welding in one of them into my original drivers door as I have a replacement passenger door that is intact.

The other one went with my original passenger door to its new owner.

This may be a good option too.

Im not quite at the point of repairing the doors yet though its not far away. Ive got new skins and new bottoms to fit but I'll come up with something for the holes.

Thanks to other things I didnt get much done this weekend but I managed to get one rear fender to the point where I could put a first coat of epoxy sealer on it.



Still got a few bits to sort out but the epoxy showed them up nicely.

First time Ive used epoxy sealer. Its hard as hell but leaves a nice finish to put primner on. Only problem, I'll need several gallons if I want to put it on the entire vehicle.

I know Im a long way from this yet but my plan is to put the gas tank under the rear bed. Thing is I dont want to fill it through the bed. So my options are to put the filler on one of the rear fenders or run a pipe to the original filler behind the driver.

Anybody ever kept the original filler with a tank under the rear of the bed?

I think that by the time you put a little slope on the fill tube, it would end up coming up thru the bed floor before it got to the cab.

I think it would be better to figure out something within the fender.. I remember seeing a stepside that had a pop up gas filler on top of the fender that was from a motorcycle of some sort. What about a fill tube inside the fender that you could reach behind the tire and fill? In my opinion a fill door in the fender doesn't look too bad.

I did see a video on Youtube of a very nice truck that had its filler on the rear side of the rear fender and it looked very nice. Of course I now cant find the video again and its the only one I can recall seeing with the filler on the wing (the truck was silver with a noice touch on the centre consule where a small door opened up and a 1911 automatically raised out of the consule - not something we would be allowed over here sadly).

Anyway, I am a bit away from this yet so still plenty time to decide. Just trying to plan ahead as much as possible.

Looking at the rear bed lay out, it seems you may end up having to think quite a long way latterally

I wonder about pane lung between the outside rear corner and fender to create some space and exiting it there.

While working on the dash, I have been pottering away at one of the rear wings.

Not the best picture Ive ever taken and Im not finished yet but thats it in4 coats of epoxy, 6 high build primer, 10 base coat and 2 clear. 1 more coat of clear then I'll flat it back and get the dust out. Then a real clean of the garage and 3 more coats of clear. Im no painter so this is my practice piece!



(colour looks crap in the light of the garage)

Oh and while pottering about I took a look at the replacement 12 bolt I bought.

You can always add a panhard bar mount on the passenger side axle tube as was originally done on the '62-'64 trucks.

I know there are Watt Linkage setups available for post 62 vehicles. I was thinking I could adapt that to fit my 62. I reckon Id need to fabricate mounts and weld them to the chassis then weld or bolt the mounts for the linkage to them.
