Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I threw some paint on the rockers and can now call the drivers side done for now. I am really happy with how everything turned out. Even the weld lines for the cab corners completely disappeared after paint.
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I got the doors back on and hooked everything back up. I can get both rear windows to work from the drivers door, but nether front window works. Looks like I have a little trouble shooting to do. Any thoughts on where to start? Next topic, I dumped some fuel into the carb and the truck started right up. That 454 sounds pretty good with no exhaust. Now for the bad news, the fuel pump isn't moving any fuel. It is a brand new pump. Still more trouble shooting.

Thanks MTCK. I wish it was faster, I need to tow the Jeep to a festival in two and half weeks.

That looks REALLY nice!! If mine turns out that nice, I will be a very happy camper. This is inspirational for me. I think I can do it.

You can do it Woody. Just take your time, both in cutting and when welding.

Go ahead and do the relay mod and get new switches for the locks and windows. You'll thank yourself later when everything works good. May need to replace motors too. To test, both wires are positive....one for up, one for down. Motor grounds to the door.

I think it Gmachinez on here that makes the nice relay harnesses. I may not have that screen name right, but there are threads about doing the relays, and he usually chimes in. I did em in my CC a couple years ago.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I finished up the fuel system tonight. I need to finish the relay wiring, but other than that everything is good to go. So, obviously since I have a relay I put in an electric fuel pump. This wasn't my first choice, but I screwed up and damaged the push rod for the mechanical fuel pump and electric was my only choice based on my time frame.
It runs. Part of finishing the fuel system was changing the filler neck on the tank so I can use my stock filler and add a vent. [IMG][/IMG] Next on the list to button up the rear end is the drive shaft. I am too cheap to pay a drive shaft shop, so here we go. [IMG][/IMG] I will stick it back together minus 14" tomorrow. After that, it is time to cut up the bed and make this thing look like a truck again. Going to be a busy weekend.

Awesome work on the truck, you have got some skills man! I don't think I would have the patience for that rust repair.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Well, the weekend has not gone as planned. No surprise there. I tried to bleed the rear brakes and broke both breeders off. So, I suppose I might as well rebuild the rear brakes. I have never torn down an axle quite like this before so I had to do a little research. I guess I will share the process here for those that may need it
We start off with obviously removing the tires and setting the axle on Jack stands. Them we need to take out the axle shaft retaining bolts. Be ready for some gear oil to leak out. [IMG][/IMG] Then slide out the axle and set aside. [IMG][/IMG] Next, remove the spring clip that holds the hub nut in place. Then remove the key. I used a magnet to pull out the key. Now we can spin out the hub nut. Mine took a hit with a hammer and punch to break it loose and I could then just spin it out with the punch. [IMG][/IMG] Then you can just slide (pound or pry) the drum off. [IMG][/IMG] Once inside it is just normal drum brake stuff. Well, off to the parts store...again.

Bummer about the corrosion. At least you will know everything is good once you're done. I have a feeling my plow truck will be a bust every bolt you try to remove project.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I at least started chopping up the bed tonight. I'm cutting 14" out in front of the wheel opening. I will worry about the back later. I removed all the bolts that hold the end of the bed on, then I cut the 14" out of the outer skin. Once I had the outer skin out of the way I removed the bolts on the sides that hold them to the floor. I could then cut the inner skin. If all goes well it will be all back together tomorrow.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Thanks guys. I spent tonight doing yard work. If I let it go any longer I would be able to bale it. At least I picked up my brake parts today and new bolts for my u bolts.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
Oh how I love putting together drum brakes. I got one side done tonight. I don't have time to work this slow. These brakes are huge too. 3 1/2" wide shoes in a 13" drum.

You'll like those brakes when it's done. I stuck the same axle out of a SRW R3500 under my 87 Burb - stops much better now.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I finished up the brakes tonight and blead them. No leaks. Then I finished cutting the bed floor. Tomorrow I will get it all welded back together. If all goes well it will make it'so maiden voyage around the neighborhood this weekend.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed
I got the bed finished up enough to function. That's all I care about at the moment.
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] So I thought it would be easier to finish welding up the passenger side floor if I turner the truck around. Since I had to do that, I took it for a little drive. I was happy that the transmission shifted into second good, I didn't make it to third in the drive way. The truck really isn't running well though. At one point it shot a rather large fire ball out of the carb. Good thing I didn't have the air cleaner on yet. I pulled one of the plugs when I got it back into the shop and it was pretty ugly. That will be the first item to address. The distributer didn't look bad at all, so I won't mess with that. The carb might need some attention. I need to consult with a buddy of mine on that one.

Looking good! I wasn't sure about the short bed dually concept but I like it. Glad the trans shifts well. A tune up and you will be in business.
