Project daily drivable 62 C20

A stud was welded to except the new brake hose "T" ... and the hardlines were hand bent, and flared....

The driveline came up to be a tad too long, but a quick trip to the driveline shop made quick work of that.

Thanks to the awesome GF who ran it to the shop, so it could be picked up the next morning....

I ran the line thru the track mount, and used the hook off of the stock rearend to keep a somewhat stock look...

After a brake adjustment, and bleed...we were back on the ground and ready for a test drive.

Very happy with the way it turned out, and again it was a pleasure working on such a nice truck...and the fact the customer provided ALL THE CORRECT parts for a change is definitely a PLUS !!!

Firstly, thanks to John, aka " Chief Rocka ", for contributing to this build thread describing the axle swap phase of my project.

I ended up deciding not to attempt this particular task myself but instead contacted American Customs & Classics( ACC ) of Hollister, Ca. to see if they would interested in taking on this axle swap. John said sure, no problem. We then set up a date to drop off the truck at the shop. The customer service was outstanding. From daily photo updates via text to they're willingness to accomodate my schedule. I look forward to working with them again.

I found ACC through the 60-66 Suburban & Panel sub-forum, once again proving how valuable this forum is when needing solutions.

This axle swap is a huge success. The drivability of the truck has been greatly improved. Spent this afternoon test driving and re-calibrating the speedometer for the new gear ratio. The 3.73 gear ratio seems to be a good compromise taking into account engine type, non-overdrive transmission and present tire size. And that previously mentioned drive-line vibration is gone.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone.

I now have 268 miles of real world usage showing on the odometer. I've been using her for dump and lumber yard runs and general errands. Made a run to the recycler and finally disposed of the old torsion bar front end.

An impact gun, pickle fork and a 5 pound hammer reduced it to 5 manageable pieces in maybe 10 minutes.

I also built some side boards and bought a 6.5x8 cargo net to make hauling easier and safer. Uncovered loads are seriously frowned upon around here.

That cargo net is a real nice addition. Very high quality. It is made by Gladiator Cargo Nets and I bought it through Amazon.

The next phase of the project are the doors. I'm doing the passenger door first. I'm expecting all of the parts to refurbish this door in the next day or so. All new glass, rubber seals, window channels, paint and inside handles. The outside mirrors will be addressed as well.

I'm also going change up the seating and get the three point belts put in. I have an end goal for this truck and the seating arrangement will help meet this goal.

Well, I'm officially calling this project completed. The goal of the post title "daily drivable" has been met. I've been using the truck every weekend and everything is working great. So I will be seeking a new owner and passing it on for someone else to enjoy, and will free up space for project 66-K20.

I'd also like to say thanks to all who commented during this thread. It greatly helped to keep me going during this two year project.

I sold that Alaskan camper earlier this year, so no build report. I also have the 62 C20 sold and will be starting in on the 66 K20 very shortly. In fact, it is going into the garage this afternoon.

I ultimately decided not to use the Alaskan because of it's weight. Instead I contacted All Terrain Camper in Sacramento Ca. and had them build me one of their Cougar models in shell configuration(this means I have to build out the interior). This camper is about 800 lbs lighter than the Alaskan and is designed for trail use. Here is the ATC on my F-250 -


My road trip plans are still on but instead I'll be using the K20. I'll be needing 4wd during my travels. The ATC will be mounted to the flatbed on the K20 and this will be my road trip/back country adventure rig.

Worked on getting the brake booster and brake pedal set up. In post number 12 there is a photo of the booster I wanted to use but it turned to be too big in diameter. It is from a 1995 C1500 and it is approximately 11 inches wide in diameter. Too big to fit between the clutch master and the engine valve cover. The truck that gave its engine for this project, a 1990 K1500, had a smaller 9 inch booster. I took it and installed on the 62. Perfect fit!

For the pushrod I just mated the 1990 push with the 62 pushrod for adjustability. I also decided to use another great idea from this board and drop the brake pedal height with an extended bump stop.

What master cylinder is This from? 72? And where did your the prop valve and lines where they pre bent?

Yes, the master cylinder and prop valve are from a 72 C20. The lines are pre-bent from in-line tube.
