Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Nice work, certainly gives you a lot more clearance to the headers 👍

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Motor mounts welded in, motor and trans mated up with the FABbot adapter and trans crossmember fabricated and installed. Now I can see exactly where the shifter will be. I had to cut the shifter rod and will be making a new one. I also had to clearance the stock trans cover and made a small tunnel with cutout for shifter base. Brakes and clutch pedal are next, clutch will be a wilwood unit but undecided on brakes. Will be either a firewall mount booster or firewall mount manual wilwood master cylinders

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
bucket seats and console or bench seat? maybe gonna need a dogleg in that shifter. if no console planned and youre gonna leave th floor area open, try to keep sharp bends in the tunnel cover to a minimum. it just makes it easier to fit floor coverings over.

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Picked up another possible seat to try, this is out of an 80s jeep comanche. The sitting position, leg room, headroom and shifter location are all way better than the suburban seat I was using. Clutch and brake leg room much improved. However it is narrow and I think it looks too small for the cab. I might try to rework the suburban seats to sit lower and further back.
Also picked up Wilwood forward swing clutch and brake pedals. I'm in the middle of fabricating brackets and will post more on that when I finish up. |

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
i'm currently running the dash swing brake/clutch and the 02 Yukon 2nd row seat in mine ... i have lots of head room, but could really use more leg room. however my head is basically on the back of the cab, so not sure i have far to go. maybe the different generation seat fits different? i also modified the crap out of the gm brackets too.

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Thanks for the reply, my suburban seats are 2012 and really comfortable but I'm jammed up into the steering wheel. I'm not super tall, 6'2, but need more room for clutch / brake. I have a few ideas to try, would really like to make them work. For now, the comanche seat is winning.
Any way you can post a picture of your pedal set up 6Dof? |

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
88-98 chevy truck seats are common to use it seems. some are split 60-40 and some are split 40-60 if you prefer. lots of guys take the headrest off so seat will go a littler further back. a seat from an extended cab truck will have a seat that allows the backs to tip forward for access to the rear seat area.

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
lots in the build thread:
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...=814071&page=3 i bought 2 complete brake pedal kits and just used the pedal from the second, then a few mods got it all together as the clutch pedal. post #90 is the best picture of where i started, but lots of other pics in the thread of it coming together and later changes. edit ... post #135, maybe #594, also #741

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Thanks for the pics, that is the exact set up I was going to use if I went power brakes. I'll get pics of my wilwood pedal box set up posted soon, I think it'll work out great.

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Here is how I set up my pedal box. Found a used wilwood clutch brake set on FB for cheap, they are 7:1 ratio. I called wilwood to get master cylinder size and went with 3/4" front and 5/8" rear MC. This brake pedal set has a balance bar to tune in the front / rear pressures so it uses 2 MC's. The clutch is 7/8 MC per fab bot manufacturing recommendations. I bought 2 brackets for the wilwood brake sets, cut them up and welded togther to make 1 clutch/brake bracket. Then bent up some steel to connect bracket to under dash and steering column mount. Its rigid. Got the pedals positioned exactly where I wanted them and drilled some holes in the firewall.
The stock firewall was those vertical ribs so I had to cut out the ribs and weld in flat sheet metal to have the masters sit flush. The only problem I ran into is mounting the reservoir on the master, I have to trim the ribs up further than I planned on. No biggie. |

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
The brake pedal is about 1/8" away from column at closest. I tried mounting it to the left of the column but was unnatural to move my foot that far.

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
![]() 1/8" should be fine, worst case you scratch the finish in a panic situation but still stop well. i love the idea of manual brakes and steering on a street rod, really liked 'em in the '69 Camaro I've driven. just better feel, more character, etc. i just need and excuse to build a small street rod now. |

Re: 56 Chevy (RIP)
Looking good. Following your build makes me want to start another one… maybe soon. Keep the progress going!
