Ok as some of you may remember, wayyyyyyyy back in October of 2011 I did up a little drawing of what I envisioned my truck to look like. It has been hanging in the garage ever since, but here it is again:


On Sunday I put the hood on, and started taking pics for you guys, so to compare please consider these offerings.
On the arrow head I decided to just do the metallic flake pinstripe, and not fill in the center of it, here is a bit of close up on how that turned out. I think I like it better than I would have the filled in look:

You can tell I still have some tweaking to do with the grill to get it to align with the head light doors, but it will get there.
Opps!! Tire needs some air ......


Starting to look like the drawing !!


Am off to the garage to dink around with it some more, going to air up that tire, start the old boy up and let the oil circulate some, and decide what to do next.... That rear sway bar is really bugging me now, so that may be the next job on the list.

On your shop size...

Don't skimp on depth from the roll-ups. My space is 40' deep and with any kind of *hit laying around I can hardly get the Crummy in there. Leave enough room so that you always have space to easily roll something in, even when you weren't expecting to need to. I'd like 60' deep!

Yeah the concept drawing was posted way back on page 1... hard to expect anyone to remember back that far. Particularly because I was such a noob I was surprised anyone even paid any attention back then LoL !!
I remember when I sat down and read Alan's build, by the time I got done, I had to go back and find stuff I had read earlier.... and found stuff I had forgotten about.

Thanks, so far so good... I had forgotten about the semi-gloss paint on the flat as well until I posted the drawing again. (The darker black pattern was supposed to be semi-gloss on the flat black)

Thanks for the input... for me, a couple of things come in to play when it comes to the shop.
Firstly I cannot help but consider it a luxury addition, as in I am building a shop instead of putting in a swimming pool. To me it is an equal context.
Second, I have spent a large percentage of my adult life working in Operating Rooms, so I am particularly used to my work space being small and efficient. I long to settle down so I can also get it organized (think Markb's garage and you will know what I am envisioning)
Third, I cannot break the bank with building the shop... I still have to build something to put the wife in, and she is four-square against a quaint cabin, or kennel.... but you didnt hear that last part from me....

Even before I decided on the turn signal mod, I knew that these trucks suffered from lack of a turn signal that could be clearly seen from the side of the vehicle. I did not however want to go over the top on it, something subtle but effective was in order for me.
I always liked the 1969 GTO side markers (front and back) and got these last July just for this build:


I was not going to mess with the fenders until I was done with the bed, but I just could not help myself, so I pulled them off the wall today and pulled the trigger on getting them ready to mount on.
Here I have drilled the install holes for the GTO signals, man I love those slugger bits, they just make the most beautifullly round holes !!


A little bit of dremmel tool work and file action and the alignment/retainer tab holes are done !!


The initial install done!
The rest of the day today was spent on filling the seam on the front of the fenders, and cleaning up some of the old fender parts to go on the new ones.

I am nowhere near doing the rear signals yet, but what I have in store for that is different from what I did in the front.
As yet, I have nothing definate on placement for them...

I am currently pouring through catalogs looking for a couple things. If anyone has suggestions please add them!!

I am looking for replacement FRONT fender parts like the one shown, as well as the clips that hold them on. I have the fender to body seals, but the part they mount to is shot and pretty much unuseable. Here is a photo of both the metal panel (with the rear fender seal still on it) and the retainer clips (the wisdom tooth looking thing on the white card)



Here are the ones that are about 6" forward of the firewall... though rust rotted, they are still useable but I would like new ones if I could find them.
Lower one has the original seal still on it, the other I am ready to put new seal on the top one pictured:


This is as far as I am now with shaving the seam in my front fenders... still some sanding to do, but this is the progress at this point:


Thats it for now... if you know where I can get those inner fender parts please let me know, I will be your best friend for ever !!

This is what I have been kinda stalled-out on at the moment.
You won't find the sheet metal NEW anywhere, but I did a search and found the parts at Aspenautoaz.com and just got them Friday.
They were really pretty nice!....after I sandblasted them!
I got the rubber & clips from Classic Parts.
I used Loctite weatherstrip adhesive & stainless safety wire to attach them thru the same holes where the original staples were.
Just put them on tonight!!
I'm gonna hi-jack your thread with some pics right now...BFF!!!!

The photos of the clips at Classic Parts were larger than I expected and it took me a minute to realize exactly what they were, but I was totally thrilled to find them.
I am going to have to call Aspenauto because the Army computer I am on today (for the next 23 hours I am on duty) wont let me forward to check out. You know the Military is so untrusting when it comes to some of this internet stuff.... Nonetheless I hope to have those Fender Closing Panels ordered by the end of the day.

Also, Cortcomp told us about the Greening Clips to use as replacement staples for these rubbery/gasket panel thingys. I got a box of them and used them last night to mount the pads to the under cowl Fender Spacers. I will try to get a photo of them up for you tomorrow night when I am done working in the garage.

Not much to show today, just dinked around with a couple odds and ends while waiting for high build primer to dry between sandings on the seam I filled on the fenders.

I made up some magnets from the stickers these guys all sent me, was starting to get a small stack of them, so sat for an hour or so and cut them out.
I really like the Brothers one, even though it was a bit of a pain to cut with scissors.


These are my inner fender seals that fill that space between the cab and fender, between the door and the vent well on the side of the cab. I used the shock pads that I could not get into place on the hood on this, secured with the greening clips (thanks Cortcomp !!) and some automotive glue.



Otherwise it was a short day for me, I had to wait again for paint to dry, so packed it in for the day early.

I have not gotten anything done on my truck this past week, the wife and I took a much needed cultural vacation down to Anchorage.

For many years now, Valentines Day has been the least favored holiday for my wife and I. As some of you know, in 1997 while she and I were dating, my 3 year old daughter died in our arms. Since then, I usually spent Valentines with a bottle of Jack Daniels and some photos of my little Boo (as in Boo Radley, not pop music reference)... This year we decided central Alaska was just too depressing and a small trip was in order to break the cycle.
It was -20 degrees in North Pole, and +25 degrees in Anchorage, that alone is spirit-lifting !!

The plan was to eat too much....play too hard....and party like we were 25 years old again.
Boy are we ever the over achievers when we work together !!

One third of the 6.5 hour drive down there, I remembered to pull off the side of the road and snap some pics of this old beast I spied last spring when we went down there.
Not sure of its year exactly, but the cat track set up alone is noteworthy, and indicative of Alaskan mentality:




We had a fine meal at Outbacks, with fantastic service for Valentines Day, then did some club hopping before calling it a night.
Then a very late brunch at Buffalo Wild Wings (our first time there) then we closed down another club that night!
The next day we went skiing...
This is on the way to Alyeska Ski Resort on Sunday:


This is that same mountain in the back ground as the Ski Patrol is splinting Trish's leg after she caught an edge in a turn and sprained her left knee. It was a true shame too as we were only half way thru our 5th run of the day and had planned on skiing until 9pm....
I know I made one fellow's day when I gave him our lift tickets....

They were just too expensive to let go to waste, and there was no refunds of course, but that is not to decry the Resort, their Ski Patrol was one of the best, quickest, attentive, and professional bunch I have ever seen on a mountain!

After we got her off the slopes though, it was a short trip to the Air Force Base ER. Luckily she did not tear anything (ACL or PCL or Hamstring) or break any bones, just sprained the snot out of it....
Monday we did the return trip, spotting moose along the road the whole way.

She is currently camped out on the couch watching some girly Vampire drama and licking her wounds.

I hope to get some progress, done on my truck this weekend. Just at wall on some parts at this time.

I like what you’ve done with the front fender markers. I never realized 69 Pontiacs made such a compact offering. I fell in love with the round 68 Mopar marker lights the first time I saw them. Years later I installed a set on my 67 Chevelle.

The nose of your front fenders are turning out nice. I had to do mine as well, because the inner curved piece was so badly malformed you could stick a pencil in the square corner gaps! I just used JB Weld after sandblasting the seams/gaps. I sure wish I had taken before pictures. They were aftermarket fenders from the very first batch that came on the market. Boy were they rough, and required a lot of bending and flattening just to line up with the doors and fender extensions.

I had to look up slugger bits as I had never heard of them before. Can you use them in a hand drill, or do they have to be chucked up in a mill or drill press?
