One of the guys off the samba makes some racks for the type 3. The sunbeam looks a lot like a Notch. Even the color reminds me of the early VW's. Check out http://www.pedroracks.com . It should be interesting to see the build on your type 3. You going to do it on here or on the Type 3 forum over at the samba?

As for seats, look for something with GOOD lateral support. It's easier to drive fast if you're not trying to hold yourself in position. This is one of the first things you should do on a track/autocross car as it makes a huge difference in car control.

Welcome to the world of light high powered cars. My cousin put me onto this thread, he just got done shoving an STI motor in a 68 912R Porsche, talk about a rocket.

TRUE DAT! Check out the late-60s GM buckets in my latest acquisition (67 Corvair Monza 140/4-speed). They're totally flat and super narrow, and lean back too far (no adjustments). Have to hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands on the corners. What was GM THINKING? The low-back buckets these replaced were almost flat, but wider. I have a pair of those that will go in this car. I'll miss the Lear buckets I modified and installed in the 68 I just gave to my kid (gonna miss the car too).

Those tan seats are a little better than the corvair seats, but they're still pretty flat. I setup a momo racing bucket for my STS Civic Si. Tire swap/seat swap and she's ready for the weekend. Most people would consider the stock Si seats to have plenty of lateral support. But if you've driven in a Kirky or other race seat there's a huge difference. I just ran the stock seat belt because the car doesn't have a cage for a 5 point.

well it has a k&n filter....if your asking about the intake system its a PRM intake whats cool about the design is that the filter is facing inward. i get oos and ahs at the dyno ...only thing is its not that much louder then stock...the aem cold air is ridiculously loud...which can be fun

I think the only way to keep you snug in the seat is a combination of 5 point
harness and a velcro suit . Looks like too much fun to me !

The vette truck is now in line behind the Tahoe and my wife's FJ40. The Squareback would get some love too if my son ever get's motivated...

Here's what's in there now. Nice originals. I don't want to deviate too far from this. Maybe even just have bolstering added to these (though those Alfa seats are tempting) :

Thanks for chimin in. Those are some dead sexy racks! Would love to do up a notch. I'm leaning toward all metal on this one though. Something simple and clean. Maybe something that sits low like this:

My first car was a 67 bug with a built 1641 ...was fast for a 15yo (rolled it before 16). My brother had a 71 914 that I think I drove more than him. Later an XR4TI.

A friend of mine has this turbo'd 912

...and this STI powered/Lotus Suspended 914. I've lent a hand on both cars.

The song is Beck, "Hell Yes." Which was the thought going through my mind on that first drive. Also, my Beck station on Pandora was playing in the shop for the majority of this build. That, Foo Fighters, and Cake stations too.

Have to ask... what's the truck in the background? It looks really nice, it can't be the vette truck, that's still in primer, right? Is there an FJ hiding back there too? How may toys do you have man!?

I used Procars in my project Lola. Plan on fabbing your own mounting brackets though. They come with tracks, so fore and aft is covered, and the seat back reclines. Very comfortable.

Ha, looks like a small world. I thought that Yellow 914 looked familiar.

Here's my cousin's youtube feed, he mentions Britain Smith in it.


He went from stock (my civic smoked him at the track) to a type 4, to the STi.

I've had 3 Bugs 65,66, 73 super, and a couple dashers. Bought a used 90 CRX in 2000 and have had so much fun with that car until it was stolen that I replaced it with a 91 Si hatch, fully STX prepped (quaife & insane brakes).

Dad was a VW guy and was a moderator over on the Samba, I met Pedro and a few others when dad would come out and get together with the type 3 folks. Pedro built his first rack for himself, then started making them for other guys and turned it into his business.

I'm not sure what buckets Ron has in his 912R, but they're repo lowbacks that have a head rest, they hold you in place. I do like the Kirky ones but they might not have much padding for a daily driver. All the seats scat makes don't have enough lateral support. Sticky tires, and good suspension would have you in the passenger seat in no time.

there a lot of adapterplates available for those bugs , there was one company here that made them to fit a alfa romeo alfasud engine to the gearbox , thats a flat 4 watercooled engine that realy likes to rev
........ come to think of it a subaru impreza has a flat 4 watercooled too only a LOT more powerfull and with a huge turbo

there was a rendering made of the beetle in the english streetmachine magazine wish looked realy cool , the dimentions dont quite match the originals though (the doors are higher under the windows the sill sits lower )

now theres a challenge in sheetmetal

i complete 2 of the trucks intoo running fashion one custom and one basicly stock the thirth will be sacrificed for parts

Most the sand rail crowd are going from temperamental "built" but not too reliable VW type I motors to subaru motors. That's the route my cousin went, and the route I would go if I picked up a Notch or Bus. A suby notch would be cool, problem is though I've been doing autocross and track days for years so I need something that can corner. I think my ultimate goal will be a 7.
