Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Okay I didn't actually take this one. My wife did.
A couple of hoodlums in an old car. The guy driving looks pretty sketchy. That shot was taken on Labor Day 2012. Minutes before a huge brush fire broke out. A welcomed sight. That I will never forget.

Going through my dad’s stuff I came across his family’s ration books from WWII. They were pretty self reliant so most of the ration coupons are still there...

I spent quite a bit of time with her in her later years, she lived to be 94. I learned all kinds of things about the everyday life of a person who when through so many things. She was a child during WW1, married and bought her only house not long after the depression, had my dad just before WW2. Living in this house, she initially had an "ice man" who delivered with a horse and buggy and was here to see a man land on the moon, all the way to cell phones. But I never knew about the war bond books. I would have asked her why she never did anything with them. Maybe she did? with others that are obviously not around any more. The ones that were here were in various stages of being filled up. If that program ended before she could turn them in, why not do something else with them? All of those 30s coins were really cool though. They hadn't seen the light of day since who knows when, just in a closet in the basement....probably before I was born. (18 years after WW2)

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Good Grief! I never thought of it this way. Lets see WWII ended in 1945, my wife and I were born in 1959. Dang the war was only over 14 years!!!
That is so weird ... 14 years ago it was 2007, which I still remember pretty darn well. When we were born WWII was more than likely still heavy on the minds of the world. BTW I just told her we were born only 14 years after the end of the war. That didnt go over well with her LOL!

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Yep, for me it was ten years. I guess that's why there were so many WWII theme movies and TV shows, we played "army" as kids, military surplus all over, and Radio Free Europe was a thing. Japan was occupied until 1952. Japan and Germany didn't take long, really, to bounce back and start pumping out cars to send over here.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
During WW2 my grandmother was one of those that worked part time for some govt agency going around snitching on those that didn't follow all the wartime rules just so. Sure fits the personality that I knew She would love to be around in 2020 helping to enforce the pandemic rules

Years later when I met my biological father, I learned that he had trained as a paratrooper to invade Japan. He served in the occupation force instead. Funny, when I was born the (un)Civil War wasn't much farther back than WW2 is today!

Hey, I tell you what. There are some elder folks in the deep south who are still fighting the civil war to this day.

Yes, it's fun playing and quality is still very nice even with old tapes.
Have piddled with reel to reel decks since teenage years. These Teac models (A-2300) was built with great quality and sounds excellent. |

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
My Dad was born in 1941. My Grandfather was a young man but was not drafted because he was a foreman in the factory. He did 45 years and my Dad ended up doing 30 years there too after he got out of the Navy. Our hometown was known as the "Brass City", it produced more brass then anywhere in the world. I was born only 19 years after the War. I suddenly feel much older. Thanks
I only knew one person who had a reel to reel. I just saw one (Teac) in a thrift store recently. |

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Interesting story Rich, they are still around and being a pack-rat I have the old reel to reel tapes from early teenage years sitting in front of the radio recording songs & making mix tapes.
And now 50 years later I still make mix tapes for friends & helping out fixing decks etc. Some brand and models were "lemon" even new but you learn what to stay away from and others who will serve you well enjoying the music. Finding pre-recorded tapes at garage sales and thrift stores was really fun. Even rebuilt bigger machines for recording studios in Nashville and shipped many overseas after restoration. Got in contact with many nice people when internet came around, wanting a machine listening to the old tapes they had tucked away deep down in the closet and so much joy being able bringing those memories back to life again. And the smaller 3 inch reels that was popular in the 60's with Vietnam era going on from GI sending tapes back home to the family or friends. I built a system for making those old tapes to digital (CD's) many became tear tearjerker's when they could hear the voices again, some never heard a parent's voice before..the list goes on and on Rich. It's been a very fun and rewarding hobby with these old machines, even Nasa contacted me wanting a deck for transfer the old tapes to digital source. For many years I thought the only fool left with a reel to reel was me, but no no, they are many others still around. You should check what model nr that Teac has, I'll be happy give you some hints or info before you buy Rich. Pss. link to the Teac A-2300 S spinning: https://youtu.be/0gCeczoa86Q |

They still live on, and farm the same section of land that his (however many grand daddy's it goes back) got after the Civil War. It got split up some what over the generations and he eventually bought it all back except 100 acres, which he was working on buying back from a cousin when another cousin stepped in and "bought it out from under him"....Talk about the Hatfield's and the Mc Coy's. I keep expecting to see the in news where these "Cousins" are shooting at each other since both houses are well within rifle range. |

My grandmother was very much stuck in the depression mentality for the rest of her life. I'm sure that the hardship of WW2 just reinforced it, but she saved everything and used it until it was absolutely done. She sewed her own clothes, grew and canned vegetables from her garden, re-used or recycled everything....not that it's a bad thing. If she threw something away, it was definitely useless. The other time thing that I am frequently aware of is music. When we were kids in the 70s, my brother and I used to tease our parents about their "oldies" music from the 50s. Golden oldies that were 20-25 years old.....lol. So this year will be the 40th High School reunion (assuming we get to have one). So the music I grew up with is nearly 50 years old, that 20-25 years doesn't seem so far back. Heck, my kid is 25 and I was 32 when she was born.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
I think the first song that I remember was the "Three Bells" by the Browns which was of course on the radio at that time. Also remember "Ring of Fire" when it was the rage on the radio.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
I took our two oldest excavators to the equipment auction this week. I showed the guy checking in my bidders card. As I was standing there I realized the card was older than they guy checking me in.
When I first started going to that auction, I was a young man. I would watch the old men bring equipment in that they had bought new and worn out, and were now selling. I have become that guy.
