Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Works finally slowing down..
The rebuild of the folks house is about to wind down
I started cleaning on my shop to get ready to start back on the truck...only to discover that half my shop lights have burned up ballasts..they dont make the ballasts or fixtures I have anymore..time to upgrade to leds..got all new fixtures ordered..
Then this happened..
I hate tailgaters..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Yeah, I done went and got another IH project..
Been looking for one of these that was in decent shape for a bunch of yrs now..
Stumbled upon this one with the help of the IH side of the world..
It's about 95% rust free..and other than a few small dents is very straight
A 1958 IH A100 travelall...
should be a good match to Columbus..
Most of these back in the day were 4wd...this is a 2wd
and turning it into 4wd is already in the plans..
A near 3000 mile road trip in the ol C30 and I
managed to get it home and stuck it in the back of the shed for now..
Itll be a project for on down the road..the maindest thing is Its mine now..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

That's one good looking Travelall! Probably my favorite of the Internationals other than a Scout. Also that's one fine one ton truck.

Glad to see you back around to where you can work on this build, been watching it for a while and your work is the highest quality, can't wait to see it all come together!

When I was a kid, a guy at our church had one and I got to go on trips in it.

Great to see it's going to come back to life!

That's surprisingly solid Greg, where did you get it from? Judging by the window decals it was California...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

heres the story behind it..
Robert wins a prize..of some sort..haha
it is a original California rig
the story goes it was bought new by a hippie beach bum that used it for beach camping
it had a slide out bed with a slide out kitchenette under it
it was originally black and white from the factory..somewhere along the way it got painted this teal or whatever color it is
one oddity i found from the LST was it was special ordered without the 2nd and 3rd row seat.. so i guess it was planned for camping from the start
i want to add at least a 2nd row seat, so ill have to figure something out for that
the next owner bought it and drove it to Wash state..
he parked it in the shed in the pics..its sat there ever since 96 ..the next owner bought it and it was hauled to Oregon.
this is where i bought it from..this owner hauled it to Colorado, where i picked it up and hauled it to Alabama
it does have some rust issues..but mostly just the front floorboard..it will have to be replaced
there are some small areas behind the rear wheels thall need attention
and the bottom edge of the rear hatch has some soft spots
but overall im very pleased with the condition of it

I really like the Green. I know it's hard to get away from the International Red though. Or do a Twinkie and go all Red.

Nice. I've always liked International's like that. It looks like it's petty straight and all of the trim looks like it's there and good. I like your idea of making it a 4 wheel drive as they look so much better that way. I just noticed that it's a three door, too.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Regan..haha...its gonna have to be stripped so I'll have a clean slate to decide on color ..much later
I really like dark blue and white, but the ones I've seen those colors dont do much for me..
I do kinda like the light blue and white..havnt ruled out red and white..but I've got plenty of red with Columbus....also thinking maybe dark green and off white..
Dark green was my other choice for Columbus, but all my friends voted red..
Dont know, but I've got plenty of time to. Worry about that..

Thanks Kirk...I'm ready to get the truck done..

Yep Russell...IH was ahead of their time on lots of things..most people never realized it..
And I've got a crazy idea floating around in my head ..dont know if I can pull it off or not..but we'll see...again ..much later

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Robert..finally got all the new LEDs up..still trying to get used to them as they dont really flood the light like the old florescents did.but they're definitely brighter..!!
Also during the parents house remodel, I had turned my temporary paint booth into a temporary cabinet shop..so I washed it out real good and laid some of the old plastic back down..
Getting ready to respray the bedliner..
Decided to build me a A frame with a 2x4 crossbar..to use for painting and such
I didnt like the way I had to do it the last time..

So Heres another , didnt much happen this week update..
Finally got the bed and tailgate all taped up and ready to respray...
Tailgate is hanging on the new A-frame rig..this is much better than the way I did it last time..and should be useful for future projects..
After talking to the linerextreme guy, we concluded what part of my issues were the last time I tried this..
The real mess started when i couldnt keep the hopper on the gun, as it turned out, there was a rubber coupler between the hopper and the gun, similar to a piece of radiator hose..when the liner came in contact with it ,it had a reaction and turned the rubber to a slimy piece of crap..that's why tightening the clamps had no affect, and resulted. in the hopper coming off and making the mess I'm trying to fix now..
He recommended the harbor freight hopper gun, said it was the same one he sells..and no rubber coupling
I decided to wait a few more days to spray this..its supposed to be in the mid 70s by fri..that way I wont have to turn the shop heat on and use up that high$$$ gas I just got...
Also did a little wiring..tying up some loose ends that I'd left before..
