I few years ago, I had just finished a 1970 SS 454 El Camino, and the bride and I drove it up in your part of the country. We made a circle through Minneapolis on a Friday afternoon and on our way back to the Interstate we crossed a railroad track and I heard metal pieces hitting the pavement. I pulled into the parking lot of a Caterpillar warehouse and found the a-arm shims were gone. There was a Firestone tire shop nearby but it was almost 5PM. They gave me some shims and I backed the a-arm bolts off 3/4 round and by trial and error replaced the shims. To this day it has not had an alignment.

I too kept the original 16.5" rims on my 1972 Super. I used the same tires, since there is a very limited market of radials in that size. I had the rims powder coated several years ago and they have held up beautifully.

Talking Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

Here's more 16.5" steelie love. The original KH 16.5" x 8.25" wheels on my 1970 Blazer. The tires are bias ply STA Traxion 10.00-16.5. Sad to see most of them have been replaced by 15" x 8" Rally rims.

Interesting little footnote. These were special order wheels, and one of the most expensive options in this period-even more than factory C60 Air Conditioning. in 1971 A/C was $421. These wheels were $479! In current dollars this would be $3684!!!

beautiful truck you have there, just the way i like them too.i did round up 4 Ford 16 inch wheels and 4 new 16 inch tires but didn't think they looked as nice as the originals so i sold the tires to a buddy of mine for the rear of his dually truck, the wheels went to another fella on here in Ohio and i did up the 16.5's and not disappointed with the results.take care.Greg

Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

Maybe there is a use for the 16.5 rims I removed from my truck and replaced with the Ford 16x7s. I know I doubt I ever go back for the simple reason I hate the ride the heavy ply rated tires usually give, and to my knowledge no one makes a "P" passenger rated tire in 16.5. (and price tag on 16.5) I had some 70 series P rated used tires and they give a very good ride, and will haul anything I ever plan on putting on the truck, plus I like the wider rim which helps fill out the wheel wells much better than the stock wheels did. Guess I will put them away.

That's a nice looking truck! What are your rear 8s?
