So I came down with a case of anal glaucoma today (I couldn't see my ass going to work!) took the day off to do a little more work today. I hit OSH and Home Depot early for Rustoleum Rust Reformer, some naval jelly and some Ospho - or whatever HD calls theirs. Here's how it went....so far!

Backside of front bumper: Crusty rust & old chrome bubbling loose in places:

Following directions I diluted Ospho 3:1 and sprayed one side. Full strength by brush on other side. Kept it wet for HOURS - not much happened. After 8 hours my impatient ass was tired of waiting (Yes Virginia, I know you're supposed to wait 24hrs.) I washed it off, dried & used a 3M wheel to remove the remaining rust and loose flaky chrome. Came out decent:

In the center (above) you can KINDA see where the Ospho pooled so it stayed submerged/worked best. I bet it would work great if you get $100 worth (riiight) to submerge a big part in a kiddie pool.

After, I sprayed it with the Reformer and up close it came out quite smooth given where it started:

Hit it with the Rust Reformer - Don't flame me, I like that stuff. I don't know if it's just black spray paint and I'm fooling myself, but I'm going willingly!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Oh and P.S. I also used the 3M wheel to strip the front side of the grill under-apron. I wire brushed the backside (sorry, forgot to take a pic) and sprayed it AND the grill with the Rust Reformer. Label says you've gotta wait 24hrs (grrrr...) to top coat. Pics of THAT hopefully tomorrow.

Stripped but Reformer on the mounts where the 3M wheel couldn't reach. I DID spend a while to scrape the loosest rust off with a flat screwdriver. Best I could do.

continued working on one of my rear fenders. Welded a new piece in the flange that bolts to the box side. Been putting in overtime so only have a few hrs here and there to tinker.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

oldcouple - I'm pretty sure that's a Chinese grille and I've heard differing opinions on whether they fit properly or not. I WILL have a chrome grille someday but for the present I'm just trying to get my truck to a clean, reliable weekend driver. THEN later I will likely blow it all apart and do high end paint and chrome.

Finished the rear driver fender mounting flange and started pounding out the small dents here and there.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Yesterday I took a drive on the back country roads down in Missouri. I had just rolled it out of the shop for the first time since November's snow hit.
The plan was to verify the gas tank's range and enjoy the nice heater on a cloudy cold day.
It ran dry 3-miles from the gas station, which is another 3-miles from home. Now I know.

?? How'd I do what? The headlight buckets or the chrome?

On the buckets: 1st I washed them with degreaser and a scrub brush, then used a wire wheel on my bench grinder to remove rust & some undercoating a previous owner got on them. Then I used Rustoleum red oxide primer and after it flashed I used their Professional grade semi gloss black.

Headlight bezels got polished with Turtle wax chrome polish and OOO Steel wool.

Getting the "bubbles" out of the chrome is what I needed help on. I will try the 000 steel wool.
I still have a couple of cans of the TW chrome polish from the seventies!

Photos show correctly.
Thanks, Dan.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I forgot, last week I did about the same things as Dan.

Even put in new stainless screws to hold it all in.
Added new NAPA 7" halogen bulbs and a SpeedWay.com headlight relay kit.

Also, installed a cooling fan manual dash switch and fan relay kit.

So, yes Dan...how did you achieve the "new" look for the chrome rings?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

My stuff is small potatoes;

hsdropout, your paint is NOT "small potatoes". It looks really good. Are you an experienced painter? I'd really like to see details on your home built booth too and any info on the paint, you used, HVLP (I assume) tip size, etc?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

i gutted all the old wiring out of the cab, which was a good thing. I found 14 splices and the ignition switch has 10 leads coming off of it, what a mess. I also patched up a couple spots on the floor and took a wire wheel to the rest of the can floor so I can prep it for coating and then sound deadener. My Rebel Wiring harness has shown up so I can start the task of mounting the fuse panel and running wires to their new home.
