Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

A little more accomplished today…

Started out removing the tailgate, tailgate chains and spare tire carrier…
Spare tire carrier needs to be modified to accept 5x5 lug pattern…

IMG_4661 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Tailgate is in really good shape, just needs a touch of work above the "R"
IMG_4660 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Next up, with the help of my Bro-in-law, we flipped the hood and prior to beginning the sanding I drilled the mounting holes for the '56 Chevy Car Hood Ornament...
IMG_4662 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr
IMG_4664 by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

all drilled and mounted…

The curve under the front of the ornament fits the hood lines real well, although at the back, that mount sits up off the hood, will address that issue once the hood is painted...

Later in the day, once the shade had settled in I prepped the rear fenders for some mud…

Next up… Lotsa sanding on the bed and hood...

Laterz...

+1

I would love a good condition hood ornament for my truck, but they are silly money, if you can find one.

Maybe both trucks will be there??!

Thanks, trying to work outside when the heat isn't in "Killer" mode is the fun part... …man I need a garage...

Plan is to get at least the 65 to Clem's, 72 is back up in the event I run into any snags…
Gotta paint the bonnet, it is mostly primer, that bit of color is just where I shot some w/o prepping just to illustrate the color with the ornament in place… and most of that has peeled or flaked off due to no prep work...

Not sure on the logistics of both trucks, but we can cross that bridge when we get to it...
My ornament was a Flea Bay score for $30…
You are going to have some stooped heavy cases on the return flight...

Our's dry rotted and the springs started popping loose, I repaired a few holes only to have more go south, may have been a 280lb football player jumping from it to the pool that did it in...
Not one to let good reusable metal go to the scrapyard, parts of the frame were re-purposed as stands, one is where the tailgate awaits work, and the other is currently holding bags of soil for some tree planting scheduled for cooler weather…
A friend of mine re-purposed parts of his trampoline frame as an awning for his shop, I thought that was a cool idea, so I saved the pieces and came up with the stands thus far… who knows what the remainder will become?

I cannot believe how good the hood ornament looks and how well it fits the hood
Infact I love it so much I've bought one myself, also from eBay and also $30 + $15 shipping to the UK, although with a shorter tail than yours, I just hope it fits as well

This is true.

I now have one on watch on EBay.......

Always loved them, but price seemed a bit steep for a shiny one, so I will have to just go with a used and pitted one, and hopefully get it re chromed etc.

Thanks Don!!

PS. Nicola said I could have one.

You guys got me thinking/desiring one now too. My 64 has some kinda holes already in the hood, so it looks like it had one in the past.

The hunt was rather productive, see my '72 thread... and my son-in-law was able to get the bits he needed for their car...

gotta head back to retrieve a P/S Pump with V-belt pulley from the same donor, seems my brain-dead self neglected to grab the Pulley removal tool on the way out this morning…
