Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

that's awful interesting stuff, especially when you know the story.here where i live was once a booming coal mine town, this whole area for miles around.you can't walk anywhere in the woods without seeing bright orange signs posted on trees, warning of open holes in the ground, left over from the coal mines.the problem was, most of the men here worked in the mines, then came home and dug what they called a "bootleg pit" anywhere they figured there was coal.there's holes all over the place.i did just see a drawing of a commercial coal mine that wasn't far from the house,in about 1900,the drawing showed all the shafts, they went down 3300 feet and turned out and worked under the ocean floor??can't imagine?i thought truckin was tough?that's when men were men.

My in laws lived in Wilkes barre pa ,my first wifes grandfather worked the mines . One of the shafts went under his house (coal company owned the ground ) was great for him as he dig a small tunnel to the mine . He would go in the basement and go to work. He also never had to buy coal for the furnace.

That is what it is looking like here right now. We got a little snow first but it didn't stick to the vehicles and now they are covered in ice. It is still doing the freezing rain thing.... I hope it quits soon.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Not but a few brief flurries about a month ago here, so far. These storms coming across are bringing rain chances at some point of each day this week. It will come, but not yet anyway.
The mid-Atlantic can be an odd place for weather. Truly an "If you don't like the weather today, wait till tomorrow" kind of place. We can get warm moist air drifting up from the Gulf of Mexico, we can get what the weathermen call an Alberta Clipper, not to mention the polar vortex events in more recent years. We get eastern air currents the drift marine air into us where it is damp and cool for days, much like the NW coast. We get nor'easters where the eastern air flow combines with a northwestern cold front and that is the recipe for our largest snows. Also get big snows if a NW cold front mixes in with and overpowers a gulf air flow. Sometimes the gulf air flow overpowers a weaker NW front and it might just sleet or freezing rain. We truly get it all when it comes to precip. It seems to happen a lot where we get our driest crisp and coldest air and clear skies for days, only to have the gulf air warm it up and rain. I hate that about here. I'd rather have snow than 40-degree rain.

I hate freezing rain. There is nothing you can do but watch it build up and hope it stops or warms up. It will take powerlines down at 1/4". Did I mention I hate it? I've seen a lot of concrete sidewalk ruined by trying to chop it off with digging bars, axes, whatever. It could be melted off the next day.

I finished up the last of my christmas ornaments the other day. A couple ladies from work ordered them. And I finished up the first 2 carbon fiber Radio control car bodies for straight line record runs for a friend in TX. Supposed to do 150-160 mph so I'm told.

I remember those days all to well. Freezing rain was always really pretty to look at from inside, in front of a nice warm fire. I don’t miss it at all other than that. Dads house always looses power for a few days when the ice storms come. He’s far enough up on the mountain that he’s seemingly last priority for utility repairs.

We’ve had snow and rain for a week here, with another week to come. I’m tired of it. You get spoiled by 310+ days of sun a year.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

your getting most of it in two weeks! It has been dry here for a good while. We have a good chance for rain every day this week, but it's just brief showers. Heck, New Years Day it will be 60 or so. But... Monday they are calling for high of 37* and snow. I believe some Tuesday as well

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

35 degrees here. Not much snow. My wife and I went to go look at a vacation house. Not a bad drive but when we got to the place the realtor couldn't get the lock box open. It had some newfangled computerized keypad and the internet was down. It wouldn't open. So we have to go back Friday or Saturday. Complete waste of time.

Realtor was pizzed. She said she's putting the old lock box back on.

Modern technology strikes again.

I made New Mexico red chili sauce from scratch to make a breakfast skillet for my family. Damn that chili is good. If you have to ask what red chili sauce is or why there’s no beans, it’s impossible for you to understand what you are missing

It's funny I just made red chili sauce for Quesadilla's. Being in New Mexico I'm sure that you get better Chile's than I can around here.

Washed them down with some "Permanent Waves' beer form Chapman Brewing. Co. A little pricey but good stuff if you can find it. Got no complaints and some clean plates.

I always try to make salsa, chili, and BBQ sauce from scratch. It's just better.

You guys care to share some recipes? Please PM . I'm not a bad cook and I like doing it alright. Kinda have to since I'm single ya know. But I also like to cook for the ladies. I am lacking in the home made sauce category and would like to change that. Same thing with seasonings. I have tons of great sauces, marinades, and seasoning packets, but I need to get past store bought to feel I'm an actual cook.

Here's what I did not on my truck yesterday after work. I've been digging out my cellar and this beam has footers under two posts that I wanted to shore up. So I grabbed left over materials and built these forms, mixed concrete, and filled (one of them)

I stripped the form today and haven't put the picture on my 'puter yet. I'll add it in shortly. Could have been nicer if I vibrated it. Got some honeycomb, but it's just in the ole cellar anyway. I did some bull work at my job and was about worn out by then

You know Paul, I’ve made it with Colorado, California and New Mexico Hatch chilies and each variety comes out great, they all taste very similar. New Mexico hatch Green chili is in a league of its own though. One day I’ll post some up pics when I make green sauce.

Tim, this stuff is so stupid easy to make it’s not funny. I’ll send you the recipe tomorrow. You’ve likely got enough Hispanic and Latino markets around that you can get the dried red chilis, if not I’m sure your sister in Taos can definitely get you what you need. They sell the dried red chilis at Walmart and the other big grocery stores here.

That looks really good. Nice job!

They sell the dried red chilis at Walmart and the other big grocery stores here.
Thanks, purshate that. My sister's in Santa Fe these days, but still can send me dried chilis. I've had her send them before. There's Badia brand sold here at Food Lion, which I use for spices. We have a Mega Mart in Frederick, which is all Hispanic, but nothing much there that other stores don't sell... except chicken feet! There is a small independent grocery that opened right in Mt. Airy I need to check out. I think the thing in NM is you get them fresh, and everybody dries them it seems

Here is my recipe: Whatever I can get my hands on. I live in a rural area with limited choices. So I use what I have available so none of my salsa's end up tasting like the last one. It's always kind of a crap shoot when I cook. I don't measure anything. I just eyeball it. So far so good.

I made some salsa and my wife took it to work and everyone wanted me to make them some. Only one problem. I didn't remember how I did it. I was just throwing stuff in. I don't follow recipes. I create them Unfortunately I don't write them down. I can't duplicate them.

I agree that Hatch Chile's are the best. I had a friend with a sister in New Mexico and when he visited her he would bring me back some. I want to go there for the food.

Tim. I have always thought that cooking for the ladies was beneficial. It show's effort. Anyone can go to a restaurant. Cooking a meal for someone means something.

I didn't cook when I was single. i mostly survived on frozen corn dogs and a microwave. I don't cook for myself.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Wet snow does the same thing, especially when there are still leaves, or on evergreens. Early season (when leaves could still be on) is when it happens most, too. Hurrican Sandy was the freakiest of all. It was October, so leaves were still on. She came up the east coast offshore, then turned inland on New Jersey and continued due west along the Mason-Dixon line into the mountains where she mixed with a cold front and it snowed to beat h.e.double l! Leaves were still on the trees and there was enormous damage. What powerlines falling trees and limbs didn't take down came down when the powerline poles snapped off in a long series. They had no power for a really long time. It was colder than it ever gets that time of year and people were stuck in rescue shelters, including my mom. Hurricanes are really bad "tropical storms" and this one turned freezing cold months ahead of schedule. Here it is a bit over one day till January and I saw a couple riding in a Miata with the top down. I think It's supposed to be 60* tomorrow. But it will be in the 30s Monday with snow. You really have to follow the weather or you could get caught with your pants down
