Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

There is a bracket that attaches the idler arm, as shown in that pic, to the frame. It mounts to the frame differently than the '63-'66 bracket. Therefore you need to locate it and drill new holes. It is really quite simple to do.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

If your steering box doesn't have one on it, you will need the correct one for that box. There are 3 different sizes/splines on the input shaft. There are 2 different splines on a 3/4" shaft, and then a 13/16" diameter shaft. A Napa store might be your best bet at finding someone that can figure it out and get you what you need. If you happen to know what year your steering box is, that will be a big help.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

With so many different variations that guys are using for the conversion I'm still just a little confused. Can I use the the original 66 idler arm and steering linkage with a 79 pitman arm or do I need to make other changes. I will be ordering the adapter plate soon and I just want to know where I stand on this conversion. Thank, Brett

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

You can keep everything and just install the powersteering box with its pitman arm:
All linkage and idler arm can remain.
Here is my conversion:

The template I made is now included with Captain's Adapter Plate.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

If you are keeping the drum brakes, then you can keep the original draglink, idler arm, and tie rods. If you are converting to discs, then if you keep your original steering linkage, you will need to change at least the outter tie rods. There is an off the shelf tie rod that allows you to do this without the need for the expensive adapter sleeves, but I don't have that part number. You might try posting the question, here on the forum, Someont here posted the number not long ago. I wasn't concerned with it, as I always change all the steering linkage to the later model components. That requires locating and drilling new holes for the idler are though. It isn't difficult if you just take your time and use the original for a reference.

Thanks for the information. That's what I was hoping. I already have new 2 1/2" drop spindles, new tie rod ends and adjusters, and the idler arm and steering linkage installed. I temporarily put the stock manual gear on so I could manuver the truck to work on it. Right now I'm in the process of redoing the rear of the frame and suspension.

Capt., I'll be ordering your adapter as soon as I finish up the rear suspension upgrades. Thanks, Brett

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

The current adapter plate works only on the '63-'66's. I have been wanting to design one for the '60-'62's but just haven't had time.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Another satisfied customer of Captainfabs plate. The truck is at the shop getting aligned after completing power disc brakes, new suspension, and now POWER STEERING!!!! The only thing I would suggest is not messing with pre made hoses. That was the worst part of the job. I should have just had them made........
