Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

it looks like the panels they sell only go about a foot up and the crunch is all the way to the belt line. Has anyone seen one of the patch panels, is there one that goes all the way up to the belt line?

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

On another note, we tried to fire up the engine today with no luck, fuel pump didn't kick on and it wouldn't fire. I'll be calling Current Performance on Monday to see what may be happening...

You need two tools in life: duct tape and WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't, you use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, you use WD-40.

Tom,
Looking good. WHat's the black stuff prior to the silver stuff? I'm familiar with the silver stuff. I assume you put it on with spray adhesive? But is the black stuff self adhesive or what?

Looks good Tom.

Btw, save the receipts for the sound deadener(sp?) and you might be able to claim it on your taxes(if you are a homeowner--that stuff is considered insulation)...I know it's not real expensive but every little bit helps, right?

It's the Lowes peal and seal recommended by so many here. Like dynomat but not $$$. It had a sticky side that I put down before the silver stuff.

The ls1 f-bodys use a flat style filter that should be pretty easy to adapt within the box. I'll take some measurements if interested.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

I have a question and if I missed it in the thread I apologize.

So are you using a vintage air setup or the 08 truck heater/blower box? If you are using the vintage air setup, are you using the GM air conditioning compressor or the vintage air compressor?

If you are using the 08 truck blower box, I need a number to the shop building the truck

I am using a vintage air under dash unit with the stock 08 compressor and a generic condensor. The engine wiring harness has a line for compressor request so the engine ECM turns on the compressor (and deals with idle speed and electric fan turn on).

As far as I have read, the factory setup uses the BCM and controls the AC via the GM CAN bus. When I looked into using the factory 08 under dash unit it looked like I would have to use the BCM and control panel to engage the AC as the entire system in intergrated into the BCM and ECM computers. This was more than I was looking to tackle so we went to the Vintage Air system and asked Current Performance to provide an AC request line when he did the harness re-wire and ECM re-program.
Thank you Tom on the info. Reason I ask is I plan on building a buget/daily driver build for my wife. I can get alot of these parts/salavge truck next to nothing and mostly likely as you said from a running truck. AWESOME TRUCK TOO Tom!!!!

70 Suburban let me know when you start the 08 AC!!!!!!

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

seams to me its not a stock unit. it looks like a vintage unit. I am goin to try to use the stock 08 but I have to mesure it and Im not sure just yet how to deal with the panel. If I go with the stock truck panel then Ill try to hide it some where. If I get it to work Ill let you know cl08.

Are you getting an entire 08 truck? FWIW, When I was planning my project, RRC recommended that if I wanted to use all the modern stuff that comes with a new truck it would be better to buy a good running truck so he could work on them side my side.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

Hey Tom,

I have been eagerly awaiting an update. Good progress.

I really like the air cleaner idea, wish I had thought of it. I built a plenum box and mounted a classic 14" air cleaner on top so it looks momentarily like it has a carb.

What did you find wrong with the drive by wire? I have my pedal mounted but I am not ready to start the engine yet. If you have any tips I would be glad to hear them.

Thanks for the comment about the air intake, I can't take the credit for it as RRC thought of it (he was a race car builder a while back). The DBW system had an issue with the wiring. I had to reverse 2 of the leads to the accelerator. it pays to have All Data and a helpful vendor like Current Performance!

I will hopefully have more pics this weekend if possible...
