I'm actually planning on hauling it back to my garage next week. Taking the week off work to hang out with the wife, bond with the new puppy we're getting, and get the garage ready the project to kick off again. One big benefit of planning to move is that I got rid of everything I didn't absolutely need, so the garage should have more room this time around .

Quick update:

Did some mock-ups on what the gauge panel I'm designing will look like. Will be adding more non-functional design details, but I'm envisioning black with a carbon fiber background.

Non-truck related update:

Getting the garage systems more organized in preparation for bringing the truck back to start up again. Targeting next weekend if we can get my friend's trailer and a few good men to help lift the bed.

Got a dust collector for the tools/CNC setup, as milling MDF and plastic kick stuff EVERYWHERE, and I don't want it all getting on the truck once it's back. It came with a 4" collector that I needed to reduce down to 1.5". I found a 4"-2.5", and then a 2.5" to 1.5".





Everything came together nice until I went to plug my 1.5" hose into the 1.5" adapter. Unlike the others, they weren't taper-fit, and were exactly the same size.



I was going to just tape them together, but thought I'd put my limited-but-evolving 3d printing skills together. After micing out the needed sizes I threw together a reducer in Google Sketchup, and then converted it to g-code (what CNC programs read) with a slicer program. For those new to it like I was not long ago, a slicing program takes your design and turns it into (often) hundreds of thin layers, that stack up to form what you want to build.



Then I sent it to the machine to print. It took about 40 minutes, but came out okay.







In the next day or two I'll switch back to the cutting tool and try out the dust control on some MDF.

Oh, and it's not a complete shop without the mascot!

Yep. He's a purebred Cardigan Corgi. His ears never stood up and we chose not to tape them.

We had Riley our Fluffy Pembroke for 13 years. He just crossed the rainbow bridge in Jan this year. Sure do miss the little guy. Here he is on swan patrol while we were out for a row. The legs sticking straight out when laying down gives them away.

Handsome dog. Our black lab/newf mix just passed away last weekend. He was 11, which for a 100+ lb dog was pretty old. Was still pretty tough though, as he was pretty active up until about a week before.

Yeah, the Corgi sploot is hard to miss!

And it's back!

Well after a few hours of organizing, some heavy lifting, a short drive, and a thank you lunch for my buds, the truck is officially back at home and ready to begin the next round of work.

I left the bed and most of the body components back in my mom's garage for the time being, but took the cab as I want to begin wiring/mocking up the engine stuff, steering, etc.



So as my first quick project, I want to see if I can print a new bracket for my fuel pressure regulator. Currently I'm just using a bent piece of aluminum. It works, but isn't pretty.



It currently attaches to two holes I tapped in the plenum:



So I drew up a quick replacement in Sketchup and started the print. It'll go for a few hours while I sleep. I think it's going to be too thin, and with a 30% infill might be too weak, but I'll give it a go and see. I'm thinking I might actually tap two more holes, and make an "H" bracket, but we'll see how the first draft turns out.

Will update you with completed photos of it tomorrow sometime.

I'm just pumped it's back and I can get some momentum going again. It's been about a year since it was in my garage.

It's kind of fun going to bed and waking up with a new part in the garage. The bracket turned out a lot stronger than I thought it would. That said, I think an H bracket will look better, and center the weight better than this long L bracket. I think the L would work, but will probably redesign this evening and print something else. Once it's done a little sanding, and maybe even some paint, and it should look a bit more 'factory.'

Glad to see that you are able to continue with you truck. Really like the direction that you are taking with the Gen I engine and hope that you include lots of pics and list the parts that you used. ( I read the whole build and liked the list of parts that you have listed so far ). The 3D printer is cool and will be interesting to see all you can use it for.

Thanks Tune_1, appreciate the comments. I'll try and do an engine parts inventory once I get it up and running so anyone could recreate the build if they wanted.

So more FPR bracket updates. After some thinking, I decided to try a different design that would be stronger. The FPR has a provision for threading in a gauge, which would add weight on the end furthest from the plenum. It wouldn't be much, but I thought having two more bolting locations on the plenum and bracket to support weight wouldn't be a bad idea. Plus I think this bracket looks nicer.

Here is the design. We'll see how the print looks in the AM.

This whole 3D printing thing is like witchcraft..... I love it.

It is one of the best builds to date that I ever read (which is why I nearly offered to buy it . )

Thanks for the kind words, though not sure if this qualifies as one of the best builds . But it does set a bar for me to meet so not a bad thing of having goals.

Here is some more witchcraft for you. As I was toasting my breakfast I went into the garage and pulled this off the printing table:





Will test fit it to the manifold tonight. I think I'll need to reroute one fuel line in order to have the regulator right side up, and have the return line on the bottom rather than the top. Functionally it shouldn't matter, but the fact that the logo would be upside down bothers me.

Bolt spacing is a little tight, but it fits the fpr. I think I'll leave the parts blue for now to highlight the 3d printed components used in the build.

I was going to ask this morning how these parts would take paint. Looking now it kind of goes well with the fittings. You are taking this hot rod stuff to a new level, at least for me.

They paint pretty well. They're just pla plastic, so some sanding and krylon and they can look very smooth.
