Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Once you get most of the built up grease off oven cleaner will be your best friend, just stay clear of the fumes.
Does your truck have a tach because that kinda looks like factory tach filter on the wire.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Thanks for the info FetchMeAPepsi!
Yes it is good to have the kids involved. My son has been frothing at the mouth to work on it through the whole divorce, so is now quite excited to be able to get in there and do something. 1985-GMC, i have heard that about the oven cleaner, so I will have to give that a try! Nope, no tach, although I wish it did!! I am hoping to at least try to start it tomorrow, or next weekend. I want to make sure my son is here for its trial run. |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
All early engine had a condenser on coil. You can take it off if you want.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
One lil' thing - the condenser on coil was to cut down on buzz in the radio so if you find you have a buzzer afterward just put it back on and it should cut it down a fair bit.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I have a pertronix in there now, will that still buzz?
If I just leave it in, does it matter which side of the coil the wire is on? |

If...when it runs, I will post a video! I'll have to figure out how to do it, but it'll get on here.
Another site member (Murdoc) is coming over tomorrow, and him, my son, and myself are going to attack it. That way we can go 3 different directions. HOPEFULLY we'll be able to try to start it tomorrow! |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
The Pertronixs should not cause any electrical feed back that will be picked up by your radio. Especially if you have the radio direct wired off your battery.
That is the set up I have on my Tempest and I have zero problems with it. Your engine water heater.... Unless you are running manual choke, unless you are living in an area that drops to around 0 degrees on days you are going to drive it, then I would just toss it. On the up side, your engine does get to temperature faster with it, and where that is really nice is it is sooner that you can kick the heater on! Not that I am an expert, but as I write this, there is still 4 feet of snow on the ground and the high today is around 20 degrees..... Freekin awesome that the kids are into it, though the daughter looks to be having more fun than the son is...

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
She lives again...well sort of!
Murdoc, AmmoSS, my son Chevyman10, and I hit it today, and got it to start. Couple of good fireballs, turning the distributer 180 degrees, a small fire on the intake, and a mostly dead battery, and she started. It will stay running...as long as someone keeps pouring gas down the carb. LOL My guess is a bad fuel pump. It doesn't seem to have enough to pull the fuel that far, and shove it up to the carb. Any suggestions? Here is a video...if it works! We also got the heater core mostly back in, did a compression test, put on the spin on oil filter adapter, and worked on the clutch. The clutch slave would not work. It was taken off, cleaned out, hit with air pressure, pried on, let soak with liquid wrench, everything we could think of, but couldn't get it to move at all. There is no pedal at all. We bled it out, got some air out, but still nothing. Any ideas? The compression test came out pretty good. One cylinder is low, but workable for now I think. #1 - 120 #2 - 110 #3 - 120 #4 - 90 #5 - 115 #6 - 120 Last edited by chevy_man5; 03-28-2012 at 04:10 PM. |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
If I shoot some oil in the cylinders, then test it again, and the numbers go up, then it needs rings throughout right?? Just double checking.
I cannot believe how much antifreeze this 305 holds. When we changed the lower heater core hose, we drained out 5 gallons, yes, 5 gallons of fluid. When putting it back in, I have put back in 6 gallons so far. I think it's about done though. I looked it up in the manual, and it says that the capacity is 32 quarts. 8 gallons! I looked it up in another manual, and the 396 only uses 24 quarts, and the 454, 20 quarts. LOL Also, I need to ask something of other 305A owners. I need to know how long the oil dipstick is from the tip to where it seats on the tube please. The manual says that the 305A takes 6 quarts of oil with the filter. I poured one quart into the filter, and 5 into the engine, and it is still not on the dipstick. When we drained the old oil out, I think we got just under 8 quarts out of it. Is there an extra large oil pan option? I haven't seen anything that talks about it, but who knows! I got to thinking about the no start issue. We didn't fill the bowl on the carb. I looked in the sight plug, and couldn't see any gas in there at all. This weekend, We will take the fuel line off of the carb, and turn it over, to see if the pump is even working, then fill the bowl, and try some more if it is!! Thanks!! |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I forget which engine you have, but here's all of 'em:
305A = 6 w filter 305B = 10 w filter (yes, TEN. Buy Exxon stock lol!) 305C = 10 w filter 305D = 6 w filter 305E = 6 w filter Glad you got her turning over. These are really fun and bulletproof engines. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. |

Its the 305A, and with 6 quarts in, not even on the dipstick yet!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I have the D. Your dipstick might be short or broken off. I'd not put more than 6 in to be safe and keep from foaming. I'll measure mine this weekend for ya if no one pipes up by then. She's away from home till Saturday.

The dipstick has the markings on it, so its not broken off, but I'm thinking it may not be the original one.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
That dipstick looks to be correct to me. Unfortunately, my burb is 200 miles away so I can't measure it for you. But, one more thing, just check and make sure the actual tube is seated in the block and/or oil pan properly.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I thought of that, and looked at it a little bit. It looked like it was seated in there properly to me. It is solid, and doesn't appear to have been pulled out any. I will measure how far it sticks out tonight, and see if anyone can verify those measurements too.
Thanks Corts60! |
