Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Oh, Car Boss wanted me to let everyone know that the Shiny new Magnaflow system did not come with cats, but we did add Magnaflow cats. The cats are about 9" long, very small. Why cats? Not because I'm a greenie, but because the child bride doesn't like the smell of the exhaust in my 69 Camaro and I want her riding in this one.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

First Drive
Another great day (for the most part). We got to drive the truck today. Double E hasd his computer hooked up and recorded about 10 miles of data, so I'm sure he'll be up tonight reviewing and making changes to the tune.

We did have some trouble though. The brakes were locking up, which cause the small burn out in Car Boss shop. This was corrected by adjusting the brake pedal travel and the new brake booster from CPP leaks, therefore we don't have any power assist. I don't think I mentioned that this week the CPP master cylinder leaked also, forcing me to buy a new one from a local parts house. I've had nothing but trouble with CPP on this set up. So, first thing Monday I'll have to call them and hopefully get a refund on the master and a new booster sent out.

Tomorrow I'll clean the truck up and see if I can sneak it back in Car Boss' shop to start the final A/C and Cruise hook ups.

Thanks Bomp. I really was not trying to chirp the tires. We later found out that the brake pedal linkage was not adjusted quite right and was causing the front tires to drag, which caused me to apply more throttle than I expected which...........chirped the tires. This issue has been sorted out.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

It's Blowing Cold!

It was 84 here in W.Texas today and we need A/C, and now I have it!

Car Boss and Double E, where busy today finishing up the Vintage Air system. The A/C controls where installed and 2 1/3 cans of R134 where put in the system. It's blowing about 41 degrees at the outlets which is within spec.

Double E also updated the tune a bit and it's running very nice. I actually drove it on a few errands this morning and I'm happy to report we've had 117 miles of trouble free driving.

Pic of the new control panel

Finnished Air Box

I had a request for a photo of the fininished Air Box. We decided to make it disappear we would paint Car Boss's aluminum to match the firewall, core support etc.

First Road Trip Report

Nothing like taking a project with just 100 miles on it and taking your wife on a little 250 mile road trip to see our grandson. Oh, we don't need no stinkin tools!!!!!!! This thing was put together by the best money can't buy, great friends.

Ran like a champ. Looks like the first tank is in the 14-15mpg range driving at 75/80mph. Still need to install new door seals, the noise on the passanger side is not acceptable. I really miss cruise control so, I hope Double E is working on that. Small bit of vibration between 80/85mph, the team is guessing pinion angle needs some tweeking. And I miss my tunes, so we'll have to start working on that, and the child bride is requesting door locks.

A/C worked great. It was 82 most of the afternoon so we ran it most of the time.

Oh, and I have a stalker. After church sunday, my wife and I went to Sam's to pick up some stuff and a guy walks up to me after we're in the store and asks me if I owned that orange GMC? He had followed me off the highway and then into the store to find out more about it. I guess orange has that affect on some guys.

All in all a great weekend. Now we just need to finish the cruise, sway bars, power trax, lower it a bit and this thing will drive anywhere.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Cruise Control Parts

Car Boss, Double E, and I went shopping at our favorite salvage yard and picked up a few parts to finish the cruise control.

Here's a quiz: How many cruise control parts can you pick up for $50?
Answer:
8 cruise control modules,
10 cables
2 wiring harness
2 charcoal canisters
1 bucket full of fuses and relays
1 bucket full of connectors
1 chrome air intake tube with....optional Turbolater. (to funny to pass up)
and 1 gold plated 99 Cadillac Wreath hood ornament.

What we really went after were the first 3 parts.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

We have a working factory cruise control

Car Boss and Double E, finished up the cruise control project this evening, using the salvaged parts that we picked up earlier this week. Double E says we have about $6 in parts in this project. Thank God he didn't calculate the labor!

Cruise works flawlessly as I expected. We took it on about a 15 mile shakedown and all systems are GO. This has transformed the truck into a long distance cruiser. Man, I'm spoiled when it comes to cruise.

I'm having trouble loading pics from my photo bucket account so, hopefully something will load from my computer.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Cleaned up for the unveiling

Car Boss, Double E, and I took the truck to the West Texas Cruisers meeting this evening for it's official unveiling at the Petroleum Museum and Chaparral Gallery. We used the garage area where the Chaparrals are maintained and used the lift to even show the underside. Got lot's of nice comments. It was also nice to give some recognition to Car Boss & Double E for all of their hard work.

Thought I would post a pic, with the truck cleaned up.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

CPP Booster & Master returned

I guess third times a charm. Finally got a correct/working brake booster back from CPP. It does look better than the other one I had on there and it does seem to perform better. I've already replace the master with another and won't be using the CPP.

Also including a pic of the truck on the lift at the Chaparral Gallery here in Midland. This is the garage area where the Chaps are maintained and is also full of old racing posters that the general public doesn't usually get to see. You'll see some on the walls in the back ground.

I think He has one of my car genes?

I think my grandson just may have inherited one of my car genes. May need to grow some longer legs before he can reach the pedals.

Thanks Chuck, I did the wheel and horn button over a year ago. I think it turned out pretty nice. I took a look at your build, your truck is really coming along.
