Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Awesome build! Thanks for the entertaining thread. Have you seen the chrome 20" H2 rims? Very cool. There are also several good looking H2 rims in 17". All are 8 lug. I'm not sure of the offset though. Most truck guys run the standard HD truck center caps with their H2 rims.

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Great job! I just discovered your build, and your walk through and explanation to great detail of your short bed conversion has given me a kick to the behind to carry on with some of the projects here at home!
Great job on the Land Cruiser, I grew up with a diesel '82 on the ranch back home, and there were a few occasions where I wished I had a turbo! As for rims, I'm thinking if you can find just about any beefy 8 lug rim where you can fit on the 2001 and up HD GM center caps that would look pretty cool!! |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
These photos are of the rear seat sub frame. I am cutting everything down and reconfiguring it to fit the 87' floor style.
Sorry the photos are a little hard to make out... What I have done so far is cut off the back frame floor mounting holes and left the 90 degree tabs as shown in picture. I have also cut out the front section of the frame so that all that remains is the section of frame that joins the seat back to the latch section of the lower seat cushion. |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
These are the front frame sections. The lower seat cushions hinge on the outer most section, and are also used for bolting subframe to floor. Each of these hinge points will be cut down and will be bolted directly to the 87' floor... Photos coming to help clarify...

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Heading to So Cal later this week and found these wheels for the Crew Cab...
What do you guys think? Weld 18X12 in mint condition: $1500.00 for the set They have 35" tires on them with only 20% tread. Once the truck is ready for the road I'll be installing 38X15.50X18 Toyo M/T Tires |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Eh, not a huge fan of the wheels. On these old 4x4's I like the look of a period correct wheel, as cheesy as it is. White wagon wheels, AR Outlaw II's, etc. That's just me though, the "big wheel" craze is gaining popularity in the 4x4's now. Awesome build by the way, I love what you did with it.

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
I think those wheels will look sick on it! Wagon wheels or OL II's are too plain jane for this build IMO. The seat frames are looking good. I know it can be a pita to modify and fit newer seats in these older trucks. Keep up the great work!

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
The wheels are sick! Definately do it, then if you get tired of them I'll gladly put them on my Crew Cab! Cant wait to see how the seats work out.

Looking forward to following your build as well! I'll be back on the Crew cab soon. I've had a couple shop builds that have taken a lot of my time (Bosses truck is always the last to get any attention)... Stay tuned and thank you guys for the continued interest and comments on my build write-up... I'd love to build these crew cabs as a full time job! |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Built my Dana 60 front axle today:
Axle housing stripped, castings smoothed over, and painted Rotors turned New Pads, inner and outer bearings / races / seals New Super Winch hubs Cross over high steer Axle is going in the crew cab tomorrow, and I'll also be setting up my 2005 Corp 14 rear axle for the crew cab SB as well... Don't lose faith in me yet, I promise I'll get it her done... What my shop has been working on in the last few weeks: http://www.cruiserinnovations.net/Cr...ruiser%22.html My Land Cruiser business is getting very busy and is also the reason my crew cab keeps getting put off.... Trust me, I'm not complaining, and just so we are all clear I'm GM Man who builds land cruisers... LIKE A ROCK BABY! |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Rear axle on the chopping block... Torched all of the factory perches, and mounts in preparation for the new 87' perches, and mounts. Should have rear axle in tomorrow.
Rear axle is a 1 ton Full Float Corp 14 from a 2005 GMC 3/4 ton pickup. Has factory disc brakes, and a drum parking brake inside the rotor. |

Dana 60 built and installed.... Gotta love my "Pavement princess" diff cover.... I would never advise using one of these covers if you plan on 4wheeling your truck....
Cross over high steer is also ready to go! Last edited by OYMC; 12-10-2011 at 11:55 PM. |
