Re: Plus Five
the hydroboost has three ports. The yellow one I believe is the low pressure return to the reservoir.
The white and green are both high pressure I think, but not sure which is input and which is out put. I think the high pressure output from the pump goes to one of these, then from the hydroboost to the steering rack, then back thru the cooler to the reservoir. Does that sound right?

Re: Plus Five
Look for a 2003 power steering pump with three openings on the "can", 2 returns, if you have not looked at pumps, depending what front brackets you have

You can see the weld in this picture. There is a sheet metal U shaped channel welded to the firewall for strength. Then the brake assembly bolts just inside that.

I appreciate your comments. A couple of questions for everyone. With the corvette rack and pinion, Chevy hydroboost and late model power steering pump, what type of power steering fluid do I use? Also, is there any bleeding of the power steering side of the hydroboost, or does it bleed itself? What size cooler and what type of cooler? fin and tube or plate?

Re: Plus Five
I made the brackets for the brake light switch and mounted it.
I also started mounting the brake/power steering components. The reservoir is a stock GM two hole remote mount that I added another return line fitting to. I just made a steel washer and punched a hole thru it with a prick punch that widened it out to 3/8 of an inch. The flange that it formed gave good purchase for solder and I soldered up the return tube to the reservoir. The tube bends down on the inside toward the bottom. Then I painted it black.

Re: Plus Five
I am going to use Power steering fluid
I think it will bleed the same as a rack, at least I hope it will, jacked up front end slow turn left and right lock to lock with the engine running check and re fill For the PS cooler I removed the cooler from the Tahoe I got everything from 2003

Re: Plus Five
What front alt and PS bracket are you using?
Which pump and reservoir did you use I am having a clearance problem with my pump pulley and rack!

Isn't there the red stuff and also clear fluid too?
Is it all the same? Is it interchangeable?

It was recommended by Pace performance. I'm not sure it would have enough clearance for a pump that has a reservoir attached. Alternator is just typical GM style.

Re: Plus Five
OK,
more questions, My transmission ( 4l65E ) has two quick connect fittings that look something like this. The radiator has two threaded ports on the side for the transmission cooler. I think I would benefit with an additional cooler before fluid goes back to the transmission. How much pressure is in these lines? How do I connect to these transmission fittings? What type of hose? What type of cooler? How big? I have no experience with this stuff, and there seems to be about a million fittings to choose from, of which I'm sure most would be wrong! Thanks

I remove those fittings from the transmission and use pn 7304988 from Napa. It is the same for a Thm350 or 700r4. The 5/16 steel line connects to that fitting with a standard brake line nut double flared on the line. Routing is typically along the trans and engine forward to the radiator similar to OE. While I have never measured pressure on this circuit, many transmission coolers connect with a barbed fitting and clamp to a rubber hose so the pressure isn't substantial. Your radiator sounds like it has a transmission cooler in it. Typically those are sufficient for keeping the oil cool enough, though touching base with the radiator manufacturer for additional recommendations based on how you will use the truck wouldn't hurt. |

Re: Plus Five
Thanks,
I guess I need to verify my radiator fittings and see if the transmission came with any fittings then get out my Visa card.

Re: Plus Five
My personal opinion would be keep the OEM GM "quik-connect" connectors and get OEM hoses to fit them. You may be able to locate a local hydraulic hose/pipe shop (Parker Hannifin) in your area and they will put fittings on your hoses or purchase it from them. You've done an incredible job on this truck to this point so dont skimp out on the mechanicals now....
As for an additional trans cooler, I would get it setup first with just the radiator cooler and see what kind of temps youre running. The GM recommended max trans temp is 275 std and 285 towing. If you are anywhere near those numbers you should look into added cooling. Most vehicles DONT need additional cooling.

Re: Plus Five
Hardline and flare fittings would be best - bend your own. Just make sure you use all 45-degree flare stuff, or all 37-degree (AN) fittings and flaring tools. Personally, I wouldn't use the factory quick connects. That is primarily to make for fast and easy assembly at the factory. I'm ditching the quick connects instead of replacing them on my truck.

Re: Plus Five
On our 700r4 I believe the case is tapped iron pipe size (IPS). We bought adapters, fittings and stainless braid along with 90s and adapters for the radiator - inverted flare for those if remember correctly. Summit cost was about $90 I think if that helps.
You can see them in this picture. They still need to be clamped in place. Mike |

Re: Plus Five
Not sure what you have for a flaring tool but a Mastercool one will make the "flares" for the quick connects. That said I swapped mine out for inverted flare ones too.

Re: Plus Five
Thanks everyone,
I don't have a lot of confidence in the quick connector fittings. I think I'll go with a combination of -6 AN fittings and hose from the tranny to the frame and go with hard lines along the frame to the cooler in the radiator. I can bend and flare some steel 3/8 tubing. I need to see how much room I have if I want to add another cooler in the return line. Which brings up another dumb question. Which line is inlet and out let on the transmission case? Does it matter which is inlet/outlet on the radiator, top vs bottom?
