Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

One big push before the weather went completely out the window turned out something worth while (for the most part). With it being nearly 64 degrees today, light wind, and some good sunshine, got the cab/fenders/hood painted. No bed (haven't started bodywork on it yet) paint or anything.

Did get some runs on the passenger side cab around the extended cab glass, but it can be painted again. Had to get to the painted stage, pickup has to roll out of the shop to get some engine swaps and other things done on some semi's.

Anyways, good day today, get to see it in one solid color for the first time in a while. Be happy to get all of the masking paper and everything else off (and the hood on) to see what it looks like. At this point I dont care what condition the paint is in, just ready to drive it!

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

dont rush yourself man. Bad things happen when you try and just get everything together. When i painted my truck, i wish i would of spent just one extra day priming and blocking it down to 600 instead of 400.. live and learn i guess

single stage or base clear?

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

acrylic urethane, bought it from summit. I didnt have much choice but to rush it, hate it when life happens to the point where all you have worked for has to get rushed at the end.

It doesn't bother me that parts of it have to be reworked, at least it is somewhat presentable now I should have block sanded it down more, but I might save all of that hard work for the 72. Still dont know how well everything else will hold together once I get it on the road, might be some short lived bodywork anyways!

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Trying to decide on front look.. Thinking about a 94-98 style grille with out the middle surround chromed. Thinking about a black one with the polished 30 bar style insert?

30 bar, the one that sits flush with the grille shell...these are really tough looking. That would get my vote.

You might have to point me to a picture/page showing which one you are talking about.

Here it is, as it sits for a while before I take it back into the shop. Going to be ordering grille insert/bumper and any other odds and ends as I think of them.

:edit:

Another video at youtube now..

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Thanks! I bought a fiber glass bed cover this last weekend too, now I need to be working on how I am going to vent my fuel cell outside of the bed.

Still haven't decided on the 30 bar insert yet, because if I do buy it, I will have to buy a bumper to match it.

Need new headlights (going back stock) thinking about doing led turn signal housings/tail lights.

Still need to do something about the column (have a standard tilt column) and the gap around it where it meets the dash.

Also need to do my wiring for my car pc/monitor setup (monitor looks good I think in the video)

I am sure there are a number of things I am forgetting to put here (helping myself keep track this way), but its been this long coming I can wait a bit longer to remember!

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

waiting for warmer weather to get some painting done on the bed/bed cover.. Havent started on the body work for the bed yet, too many other projects currently in the shop.

I have spent the majority of my free tinkering time working on the 72

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Long time no post.. Starting to gear up to work on this one again (between it and the 72 anyways). I had been debating getting a 4l80e for this for sometime, finally bit the bullet and bought a low mileage unit. Going to be pulling the 700r4 out and putting it behind the 350 that is currently in the '72.

If nothing else, I should be able to recoup some of the cost with selling the turbo 350, and still have two vehicles with overdrive transmissions..

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Worked this last weekend removing the previous transmission and putting in the 4l80. The 4l80 is a beast, it got the better of me a couple of times sliding around on the transmission jack.

I plumbed the transmission cooler lines last night and spent the better part of two hours getting my shifter to work. I had to modify everything to get it inline better, since I had clearance issues between the piece that bolts to the transmission gear selector and my header coming off the driver side.

I plan on having the drive line in, controller wired up, and fluid in it by this weekend.

The air cleaner that I linked to a few posts ago on this thread.. well I bought it. I got it in and it is about an inch or so too big diameter wise to fit. It doesn't clear the wiper motor, go figure.

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Still short having the bed, bed cover, roll pan, and tons of wiring for the carpc/touch screen and everything in between, but I still drove the pickup back to the house today. Had only been about two years since it was last in my drive way.

Transmission controller seems to be working fine, didn't have any major issues with getting the drive line to work with the parts I had on hand for it. I did make a mess with it, I thought I had tightened down the cooler lines for the transmission better then I had, so when I did the first start up to get fluid levels checked it made a big mess.

Anyways, driving it back to the house made me want to get it done even more then I already wanted, and I didn't think that was possible at this point.

Thread isn't dead.. Between the heat and no rain just about everything else is. Started some work on the bed.. It is in the shop now anyways. The itch is getting worse for it to get done.

Bought additional wiring and relays to start the carpc install. Still need to get a 4 channel amp bought a few other parts. Thinking about redoing my gauges again with a better power distribution block for everything.

Re: '89 GMC C1500 build thread

Long time, no post. Project sat in limbo for a while because of kids/work/hospital/everything in the world.

Back to the point of trying to work on it again, here is a picture from last weekend.

Pictures do it more justice then it needs, but hey take it where you can get it right?
