Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Cut a new hole for the shifter and patched the old hole with new metal.
Once I get the driveshaft shortened I should be ready for the road
Of course I still need to wait a month till I'm 16 and then get my licence.

Quick work on the trans install. Driving that truck should be a lot of fun with a 5 speed

Thanks, I bet it gets cold and loud! I plan on putting some kind of insulation/ sound detonator under the rubber mat to solve this problem.

Thanks, it should be fun and functional . I can already tell even without driving it that it shifts so much smoother than the old sm420. And I'll get better gas mileage

I thought this was the original shifter boot the whole time but when I looked on the bottom side of it I read f*rd! Hopefully the disease hasn't spread to the rest of the truck already!

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Been busy with school lately but have still been getting a bit done on the truck. I've been having troubles starting it. First I thought it was the carb then I thought It was the ignition but then I found out I had a big vaccum leak that seems to be the problem. So I ordered a new gasket that should be here soon. Hopefully it will solve the problem.

When I get my license my plan is to bring it in to the auto class so I can work on it during school.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Got my intake/exhaust gasket installed and now there are no leaks but I'm still having a problem. Still won't fire unless I really flood it, then it just pops and backfires. could the cold have something to do with it? Any idea's?

Does your choke work? without a choke you will have to pump it full of fuel to start and then light pump to keep it going till it warms up.

Nik .Had you opened up the carb. and checked float and needle and seat? Did you also check the initial timing to line up at tdc on the harmonic balancer timing mark?

Funny. That's exactly how I start my truck without a functioning choke.

When I have the choke off nothing really happens. When it's on it fires, It's not actually running, just lots of popping.

Yes the float and needle are good and the rubber is in good shape and seats correctly. But I haven't checked the timing yet. It ran fine before and I didn't touch the timing at all but I'll still check

Been busy with school lately but got some work done on the truck today. Made a filler panel to cover up where the gas filler neck used to be. Still needs to be welded in place.
