Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here are the photos of the finished tranny support.

Lines up in the same center position as the old 700R, will need to modify the driveshaft later to fit the shorter length required.

Well, here's a little progress.

Got the fuel lines done...might lengthen the braided line from the filter to the fuel tube on the motor depending on clearance.

Also stabbed myself in the hand with a screwdriver today. Can't remember when I got my last tetnus shot so I'm going to the clinic tomorrow!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Now I found a 12 bolt rear end with a posi...needs new brakes of course!

I had it sandblasted but it has some rust inside the housing....any tips on how to clean it up or just run it for a day with gear oil then completetly change the gear oil out with new stuff and should be good???

Any other methods out there?

Put my MSD starter on it too. Figured out the hole beside it was for the crankshaft position sensor....duh!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

I stripped the cab & now into rust repair.

I'm going to try to repair this cab and if I screw it up I'll look for a donor later.

Not much to say, the cab corners are both gone, the driver's side pan and inner rocker is gone, a couple of rust spots the size of a deck of cards in various spots.

Here's the pics; I'm practicing my welding on the pan forst since it is under carpet anyways...I'm leaving about 1/4" overlap to reweld from the underside as well when I flip it over to do the undercab later next week.

Wow! Nice work!

I hate to say it, but the frame and motor are so damn nice that I think i would want to start out with a better cab if at all possible. I have seen them rust like that around the windshield and always thought it would be a hard area to fix. How is the firewall area? It's funny i have a cab that is absolutely perfect except for rust along the firewall seam.

The firewall is good.

It was parked nose down for a year or two on a very steep driveway before I bought it so I think thats why there was lots of rust due to a leaky windshield.

Anyways, things are a bit different up here as most cabs are going to be rusty to some degree --- rust-free 30 year old anything is hard to find!!

Cool Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Found a place on a web search that fabs replacement cabs and body panels for all the classic Chevy trucks, in fiberglass. At around $5000 US. You have to pick it up, they won't ship it period. My pockets ain't that deep.

Then again anyone with a MIG rig, BFH and patience can fix anything. It's a little rusty, so what?
