Re: Bubba's recycling project

This is a sweet old skool truck . Packing a Cadillac motor and front wheel drive. I think I was told once that the front trans axle was from a Olds Toronado. Has about 2-3 inch roof chop and a bad @$$ front grille.
The bed has a hard fiberglass cover.
I like this truck!!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I like the second one. Very cool. I love the rat rods. Thanks Bubba. That yellow truck had a different grill last year. This one is much better. Last year he had a caddy grill ? on it. Looked like dog pue. Me no like chop chop.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Back to work on the truck.
Big brown truck came again- And Brought new mirrors !!
When I took the old drivers side off, 2 of the three bolts came with a struggle using an impact screwdriver and penetrating oil , the last one came out the hard way.
I had to drill the head off so the old mirror could come off and carefully weld on a nut to extract the stuck piece .
The heat of welding loosened it so it came off better than I expected.
On the passenger side no mirror was ever installed. There was a mounting plate visible from inside the door.
The trick is to hit the holes in the bracket/support while drilling blind from the outside. I Used masking tape on the door skins and carefully measured the holes from the other door.
A 1/16" bit was used first to check correct location of holes in the center of the support bracket.
Name: IMG_2604.jpg
Views: 1182
Size: 28.4 KB The only issue is that the wing window support blocks the inside portion of the mirror. May have to stick a bubble mirror on it.

Yeah Dave- I like to look at customs with chopped tops- But I am too tall to fit in them without banging my head! Most trucks look funny with a chop!
Oh and get your dog a milk crate so he can "Git in the truck"

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Took the day and went to Emmett Idaho "Lost in the 50s" show. This is the one of best shows in southwest Idaho IMO.
The whole town gets involved. The chamber of commerce took it over when it got too big a few years ago , Lions Club and the boy scouts cooked breakfast At least 500-600 + cars on display in the city park.
In the Evening They shut the main street down at six PM and it is wall to wall people and cruisers -hot rods and bands having fun on a Hot 100*F summer evening. Name: IMG_2615.jpg

Re: Bubba's recycling project

At the swap meet , I found a straight grill I did not need, yet I could not let sit there for $10. I'll need it for something someday .. Maybe put Mercury style teeth on it or something... It is not chrome it is painted silver but no rust .

Had a good conversion with "cokeb" from the 67-72 pages here as we wandered through the swap meet and explored the treasures to be found for reasonable money.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I am a member of United Street Rods of Idaho which which looks after our interests as far as the legislature and state laws that affect us and our automotive hobby.
AND they publish a big calender which lists the majority of bigger annual shows/ cruises /poker runs and dates/phone contacts.
That makes it really nice to plan your whole year.
Every show i attend there is always at least a dozen flyers left on my seat for upcoming shows.

Thanks for the link Dave- I did not know about that site....

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Thanks Dino- I have enjoyed viewing your work and your collection.

Finally got around to working on the gas tank again.
Went to my Uncle's machine shop where a nice tight filler spout was welded up to replace the vertical filler which came on the RCI fuel cell.
I just did not like having the filler spout in the hole in the bed floor
The aluminum pipe was a little big so it was turned down for a snug fit for the 1 1/2" ID rubber fill hose.
The clearance between the top of the frame rail and the bottom of bed is 2 inches.
Nice to have friends and relatives with mills /lathes and tig welders.

Spent 3 bucks on the chrome exhaust tip at the Northwest Motorfest swap meet.
I may have to bend a longer piece on get it closer to the tire but I wont know how it looks till I get the bed back on

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I found the mother of all bumpers at the Jalopy Jungle yard. Came off a early 70s chevy .
I have not seen rolled channel iron bumpers before. Has a little rust but is usable and stout!

I'm not proud of this arrangement ,but with school less than a month away and my daughter desperate for her truck to get drivable, I am gonna just get a function able filler set-up and come back someday and weld in a proper filler door. This will trim away when I cut in the door.

A locking gas cap is ordered as the high school parking lot is not always a safe place.
Bent a longer tailpiece behind the glasspack and mounted the chrome tip closer to the tire. Sounds sweet. She will NOT be sneeking in late quietly.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Had a wonderful day!!
Had a 8 AM appointment at the alignment shop where the front end aligned perfectly. The 71 front cross member toe was only 1/4" out with my rough guessing. The frame and thrust angle were square and perfect and also no problems with the fit of the 71 steering box/tie-rods and shafts ETC. All that was great news. We took a short test drive in the parking lot as I had no license plates.

What the Heck .. Daughter and I hauled it to DMV and got registration and plates. Noticed the title had 1 digit missing from the VIN and that got fixed N.C.
I had asked daughter a while back about her choice for a name for her truck and was it a boy or girl truck? She replied it was now "trans-gendered" as it now had a Automatic and the stick-shift has been removed. Chosen name is "Lola" In honor of the Kinks classic hit of the same name. L-O-L-A Lola
Thats my kid alright !
She thought about personalized plates "Lola" was already taken -"Lowla" was available, but she decided it was rather a expensive luxury to shell out just for vanity plates. The great lady at DMV let her pick from a new box of plates so she ended up with basic number plates but a cool number combination.
Next stop -Insurance agent to make daughter primary driver . Heck the price went down from her previous coverage in a 99 Toyota.
Finally went for short cruise after it quit raining.
It is a long way from finished but sure feels like a huge load of progress was made today!!!
